Today’s Wordle Answer

So, are you ready for the solution to Wordle #1,340? Tom’s Guide is about to reveal it.

Today’s Wordle answer is: INDIE.

Hello Wordlers! Today’s puzzle was indeed a bit tricky. Only 34 Wordle answers start with ‘I’, and this one cleverly uses it twice!

Interestingly, ‘I’ isn’t among the most frequent letters in Wordle answers, which means it’s absent from popular starting words like ORATE. In this game, starting with ORATE only revealed a green ‘E’, leaving a daunting 101 possible solutions.

However, WordleBot’s best Wordle start words, as highlighted by Tom’s Guide, proved more effective. For instance, using PLANE would have narrowed it down to 36 options, while CRANE would have reduced it to just 24. Opening with TRIED would have left a mere ten possibilities.

For my second guess, I often incorporate ‘L’, ‘I’, ‘S’, ‘N’, and ‘C’ around any confirmed letters. With only a green ‘E’ from ORATE, I chose SLICE. This added a yellow ‘I’, but still narrowed it down to nine potential answers according to WordleBot*.

Next, I tried IMBUE, which turned the first ‘I’ green but offered no further clues. Yet, this eliminated all but the correct answer. After some contemplation, INDIE emerged as the solution!

We hope you solved today’s Wordle successfully! Check back with Tom’s Guide tomorrow for more hints and answers.

* The possible words after SLICE were: HINGE, GENIE, PIXIE, GIMME, MIDGE, BINGE, INDIE, PIQUE, and IMBUE.

Yesterday’s Wordle Answer

Did you miss yesterday’s puzzle? Or are you reading this in a different time zone? The Wordle answer for game #1,339 was TRAIL.

Hello again, Wordlers. Yesterday’s Wordle was comparatively straightforward, especially after a couple of challenging puzzles earlier in the week. It helped significantly that every letter in TRAIL is among the seven most common Wordle letters, according to Tom’s Guide analysis.

My go-to start word, ORATE, revealed three letters: ‘R’ and ‘A’ turned green, and ‘T’ became yellow, leaving only 13 possible answers according to WordleBot*.

Again, WordleBot’s best Wordle start words, as recommended by Tom’s Guide, performed even better. PLANT and TABLE would have left just six options, while PLATE would have reduced it to five. DEALT as a starting word would have left only three possibilities.

Despite already having three confirmed letters, incorporating two more common letters, ‘L’ and ‘I’, was simple. I guessed TRAIN, which turned every letter except ‘N’ green.

For my final turn, I had two options: TRAIT or TRAIL. Choosing the word without repeating letters, I played TRAIL and solved it in three attempts.

We hope you also fared well with yesterday’s Wordle. Join Tom’s Guide again tomorrow for your daily Wordle assistance!

* These were: TRACK, TRACT, TRASH, TRAMP, TRAWL, CRAFT, DRAFT, GRAFT, TRAIL, TRAIT, TRAIN, TRANS, and GRANT.

Wordle Tips — How to Improve Your Wordle Game

The most impactful advice Tom’s Guide can offer to enhance your Wordle skills is to consistently use one of the best Wordle start words. This cannot be overstated – it truly makes a significant difference.

Without a strategic starting word, you’re essentially guessing blindly, struggling to pinpoint the correct letters from the 26 possibilities. However, experts (notably, not myself!) have conducted thorough analyses and identified optimal starting words based on letter frequency in the English language and within the Wordle answer pool. Leverage their research and use these top-tier starting words!

Secondly, pay close attention to letter combinations, especially at the beginning and end of words. Certain pairings are far more frequent than others. Common examples include SH, ST, CR, and CH. Recognizing these common digraphs and blends can guide your guesses.

Vowels are also crucial. While not every Wordle answer contains multiple vowels, many do, and some even feature three. A well-chosen starting word should ideally include a couple of vowels. If your initial guesses don’t reveal any vowels, consider incorporating more vowel-rich words in your subsequent attempts. And don’t forget ‘Y’ – it often acts as a vowel substitute and frequently appears at the end of words.

Lastly, actively test possibilities. As long as you don’t press ‘Enter’, you can experiment with potential answers to visualize how they appear on the Wordle grid. Input likely letters, including those you’ve confirmed are in the word, and mentally swap out letters to explore various options. This technique has proven valuable numerous times, particularly when the target word is less common (like FJORD or ISLET).

Learn More About Wordle

Wordle officially launched in October 2021, but its origins trace back to June of the same year, celebrating its first anniversary on June 19, 2022. (Read my reflections on the 5 improvements Wordle needs to maintain its appeal for years to come.)

The game’s popularity surged dramatically towards the end of 2021, going viral in January 2022 as players worldwide discovered its addictive nature. Its success led to The New York Times acquiring Wordle for a seven-figure sum in early February, integrating it into NYT Games.

Wordle is accessible through the NYT Games website and remains free to play. Both the NYT and the game’s creator, Josh Wardle, have affirmed its commitment to remaining free. While some believe Wordle has become more challenging since the NYT acquisition, evidence suggests otherwise.

Wordle’s premise is simple: guess a five-letter word within six attempts. After each guess, you receive feedback indicating which letters are in the target word and if they are correctly positioned.

A correctly placed letter turns green. A letter present in the word but in the wrong position turns yellow. A letter not in the word at all turns gray.

A new puzzle is released daily, and everyone solves the same word. The puzzle resets at midnight local time. For deeper insights into the game, refer to our What is Wordle? article.
