Baldur’s Gate 3 Trophy Guide: Taming the Owlbear Cub Companion

Securing the Owlbear Cub as a camp follower in Baldur’s Gate 3 is a rewarding endeavor for any player, and a crucial step for those aiming to collect all companions and potentially related achievements. This guide provides a comprehensive walkthrough on how to find and befriend this adorable, yet ferocious creature.

Your journey to recruit the Owlbear Cub begins near the Blighted Village. As you travel the road, you’ll encounter a scene unfolding with two individuals standing over a fallen body. Engage in conversation with them; you’ll quickly learn of their “True Soul” status. A persuasive approach can convince them to accompany you to the nearby owlbear cave, under the pretense of investigating the beast that caused this tragedy.

Proceed to the owlbear cave, located northeast of the Blighted Village. Inside, you’ll face the owlbear mother. While attempting to communicate peacefully is an option through dialogue checks, combat is often inevitable. Having the two “True Souls” you encountered earlier will significantly aid you in this fight. Crucially, during the battle, ensure you do not harm the Owlbear Cub. After defeating the mother, resist the urge to attack the cub as it mourns its parent.

Leave the cave and continue your adventure. The Owlbear Cub’s story isn’t over yet. Head west of the Blighted Village towards the Goblin Camp. You might need to pass a speech check to gain entry. Once inside, explore the camp, and you’ll likely find a group of goblins engaged in a peculiar game: chicken chasing, with the Owlbear Cub as the unwilling participant. If the cub isn’t immediately present, resting a couple of times should trigger its arrival at the camp.

Locate the goblin Krolla, who oversees this cruel game. Engage in conversation and participate in the chicken chasing activity to build a slight rapport with the cub. Inform the cub that you have a camp and it’s welcome to join you. However, the cub won’t leave while the goblins are still around.

Now you face a choice: liberate the cub by force, fighting the entire Goblin Camp, or attempt a more diplomatic approach. Speak to Krolla again after the chase. You can try to persuade her to release the cub through dialogue checks or offer a bribe. Success in either method will free the Owlbear Cub.

With the cub freed from the goblins, continue your journey and take a few long rests. Eventually, a scene will trigger during your rest where the Owlbear Cub approaches your camp. An animal handling check will be necessary to interact peacefully. Choose non-violent options and succeed in the checks. Even if a companion interrupts, don’t worry; the cub will return the following night, this time injured.

Offer healing and pass the required checks. After successfully nursing the cub back to health, it will officially become a permanent member of your camp, a loyal and endearing companion on your Baldur’s Gate 3 adventure. Recruiting the Owlbear Cub not only adds a unique follower to your party but also contributes to the rich tapestry of experiences and potential trophies within the game.
