Leveling Engineering in Classic World of Warcraft can be a rewarding endeavor, providing access to unique gadgets, bombs, and even mechanical pets. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the fastest and easiest path to level your Engineering skill from 1 to 300.
For the most efficient and cost-effective leveling experience, it’s highly recommended to combine Engineering with Mining. Gathering your own ores will significantly reduce the gold you spend at the Auction House. If you’re also leveling Mining, be sure to check out our Classic Mining Leveling Guide 1-300. However, if you prefer not to mine, you can still level Engineering by purchasing the necessary materials.
If you’re still in the process of leveling your character or starting a new alt, consider using a leveling guide to speed up the journey to level 60. Zygor’s 1-60 Leveling Guide is a popular choice to help you reach max level faster.
Essential Shopping List for Engineering
Before you begin your Engineering journey, it’s helpful to gather some of the materials in advance. If you plan to mine your own ores, here are farming guides to help you locate them efficiently:

Cataclysm Classic Notice
Please note that if you are playing Cataclysm Classic, there are significant changes to trainers and recipes. For Cataclysm Classic Engineering leveling, please refer to our dedicated Cataclysm Engineering Leveling Guide. This guide is specifically for Classic WoW (Vanilla).
Finding Engineering Trainers in Classic WoW
You can learn the Engineering profession from various NPCs across Azeroth. You must be at least level 5 to begin training.
To find a trainer, simply ask a guard in any major city for directions. They will mark the Engineering trainer’s location on your map with a red flag.
For Horde players, Orgrimmar is a convenient starting location, as you can train up to Expert Engineering there. Alliance players will find Ironforge equally convenient for training up to Expert level. Trainers in other major cities may only teach Journeyman level recipes, potentially requiring you to travel to Orgrimmar or Ironforge eventually.
Horde Engineering Trainers
Alliance Engineering Trainers
Apprentice Engineering (1 – 75)
First, purchase a Blacksmith Hammer from a Blacksmithing or Engineering supply vendor, usually located near your trainer. General goods vendors also sell these hammers.
Gnome Racial Bonus
Gnomes gain a +15 Engineering skill bonus due to their Engineering Specialization racial passive. This bonus means recipes will remain orange for 15 additional skill points, allowing Gnomes to potentially save gold by crafting lower-level recipes for longer.
Leveling Steps (1-75):
- 1 – 30: 30 x Handful of Copper Bolts – 30 Copper Bar. You’ll need these later, so keep them.
- 30 – 50: Continue making Handful of Copper Bolts if it’s still giving skill points, or switch to Rough Copper Bombs.
- 50 – 75: 30 x Rough Copper Bomb – 30 Copper Bar, 30 Handful of Copper Bolts, 60 Rough Blasting Powder, 30 Linen Cloth. These provide a good skill increase and utilize materials you’ve already made.
Journeyman Engineering (75 – 150)
To progress beyond skill level 75, you must learn Journeyman Engineering from an Expert Engineer. This requires your character to be level 10 or higher. Not all Engineering trainers offer Journeyman training.
Journeyman Engineering Trainers:
Horde Trainers
Alliance Trainers
Leveling Steps (75-150):
- 75 – 90: 60 x Coarse Blasting Powder – 60 Coarse Stone. Hold onto these, as they will be needed for future recipes.
- 90 – 100: Continue making Coarse Blasting Powder if it’s still granting skill points.
- 100 – 105: 5 x Silver Contact – 5 Silver Bar. If Silver Bar is expensive on your server’s Auction House, consider sticking with Bronze Tubes longer.
- 105 – 125: 25 x Bronze Tube – 50 Bronze Bar, 25 Weak Flux. Weak Flux is readily available from Engineering Supply vendors near your trainer.
- 125 – 150: Continue making Bronze Tubes, or consider crafting other orange/yellow recipes available from your trainer if materials are cheaper or you prefer variety. Consider crafting Clockwork Boxes or Gyromatic Micro-Adjustors as alternatives if they are more cost-effective based on your server’s Auction House prices.
Expert Engineering (150 – 225)
To advance past skill level 150, you’ll need to train Expert Engineering. This requires level 20 and must be learned from an Artisan Engineer. Expert Engineering trainers are limited.
You can learn Expert Engineering from Roxxik in Orgrimmar (Horde) and Springspindle Fizzlegear in Ironforge (Alliance).
Leveling Steps (150-225):
- 150 – 175: 15 x Bronze Framework – 30 Bronze Bar, 15 Medium Leather, 15 Wool Cloth. Keep these as they are used in later recipes. Crafting these might take you closer to 175, adjust accordingly and stop when they turn green.
- 175 – 195: 60 x Solid Blasting Powder – 120 Solid Stone. Save these as they are needed for higher-level recipes.
- 195 – 200: 7 x Mithril Tube – 21 Mithril Bar. Stop crafting these at skill level 200. Keep approximately 6 Mithril Tubes if you plan to choose Gnomish Engineering specialization at level 200.
- 200 – 225: Continue making Solid Blasting Powder if it’s still giving skill points, or consider crafting items like the Big Bronze Bomb if materials are readily available and cost-effective on your server. Consider Mithril Mechanical Dragonlings if you have extra Mithril Bars and are looking for a recipe that may sell for a profit or provide a fun gadget.
Artisan Engineering (225 – 300)
To progress beyond skill level 225, you must learn Artisan Engineering. This requires level 35 and must be learned from a Master Engineer.
Artisan Engineering is taught by Buzzek Bracketswing in Gadgetzan, Tanaris. He is located just outside the Inn, near the mailbox on the left side. You must be level 35 to speak with him.
Engineering Specializations at 200
Upon reaching Engineering skill level 200, you can choose to specialize in either Gnomish Engineering or Goblin Engineering. Certain crafted items require a specific specialization to use, while others can be used by any engineer regardless of specialization. Many items crafted by one specialization can be used by engineers of either specialization.
For detailed information on choosing a specialization, refer to our dedicated guide:
Guide to Engineering Specializations
Leveling Steps (225-300):
- 225 – 245: 40 x Mithril Casing – 120 Mithril Bar. Save these, they are used in many excellent Engineering recipes.
- 245 – 250: Continue making Mithril Casing.
- 250 – 260: 30 x Dense Blasting Powder – 60 Dense Stone. You may need to craft more than 30 to reach skill level 260, depending on skill gains.
- 260 – 285: Continue making Dense Blasting Powder or consider crafting Thorium Widgets if they are more economical on your server. Thorium Widgets require Thorium Bar and are a common crafting choice in this skill range.
- 285 – 300: 20 x Thorium Tube – 120 Thorium Bar. The Schematic: Thorium Tube is sold by Xizzer Fizzbolt in Everlook, Winterspring, located in the first building on the right as you enter the town.
Congratulations on reaching Engineering skill level 300 in Classic WoW! We hope this guide has been helpful in your crafting journey. Enjoy the many gadgets and creations Engineering has to offer!
