Destin Travel Guide: Your Ultimate Family Vacation on the Emerald Coast

This past summer, our family had the incredible opportunity to escape for a quick weekend getaway to Destin, Florida. If Destin isn’t already on your travel radar, I wholeheartedly recommend adding it, especially for a memorable family trip. Our time there was filled with joy and the creation of lasting memories – a vacation I truly won’t forget.

Destin is not only visually stunning, boasting the famed Emerald Coast, but it’s also brimming with family-friendly activities, exceptional dining options, and thrilling water-based adventures suitable for all ages. We were hosted by Destin-Fort Walton Beach, and I highly suggest utilizing their website as a valuable resource when planning your own Destin travel adventure.

Whether you’re already mapping out your Destin vacation or seeking inspiring summer vacation ideas, consider this your essential Destin Travel Guide. We’ll cover everything from where to find the perfect accommodations to the must-try restaurants and delightful drinks along the beautiful Emerald Coast.

Finding the Perfect Stay in Destin, Florida

Securing comfortable, safe, and welcoming accommodations can often be challenging, no matter your destination – particularly when traveling with children!

Our stay was graciously hosted by Southern Vacation Rentals, and our experience with them was fantastic from beginning to end. We immediately felt at home and would absolutely book through them again for future trips. They offer a wide array of properties across the Gulf Coast, providing options for various travel styles and preferences.

We chose a condo at Sandpiper Cove and were thrilled with our choice. The private beach access was a major highlight. Sandpiper Cove is a highly sought-after vacation spot in Destin, and for good reason. It boasts an impressive list of amenities for guests, including tennis courts, five refreshing pools, a fun mini-golf course, convenient BBQ grills, and more, all within the charming community.

The ease of renting umbrellas and beach chairs directly on-site was a huge plus, eliminating any hassle of transporting beach gear. Adding to the convenience was a beachside tiki hut that served delicious food and drinks – a definite win-win for both parents and kids seeking relaxation and enjoyment.

The specific condo we stayed in was perfect for our family. This two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit also included the convenience of a washer and dryer, making longer stays more comfortable. The condo had a cozy and inviting atmosphere – we especially loved relaxing on the couch in the evenings for family movie nights. The location was truly unbeatable. There’s something incredibly special about waking up to the sight and sound of the water; it’s impossible to be in a bad mood when you’re in beautiful Florida!

For anyone seeking quality accommodations for their Destin trip, I wholeheartedly recommend booking through Southern Vacation Rentals. Our entire experience was seamless and enjoyable, and we are already looking forward to returning.

Unforgettable Things to Do in Destin, Florida

Planning Your Destin Activities

Destin’s coastal location naturally means a strong emphasis on water-related activities for families. However, the range of activities in Destin extends far beyond simply swimming and typical beach pastimes. There’s a diverse array of experiences to discover.

During our trip, we streamlined our activity planning by booking all our excursions through the Little Adventures Program. This fantastic tourism initiative was developed in collaboration with local moms, offering unique insights into family-friendly fun. These knowledgeable moms are trained to assist families in choosing and booking outings through Destin-Fort Walton Beach’s user-friendly chat feature, making the entire process incredibly smooth.

This simplified planning process was a game-changer. It freed up my time and energy to truly anticipate our vacation, rather than getting bogged down in logistical details. The team I interacted with was exceptionally welcoming and helpful, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience.

Private Charter Fishing in Destin: Catch & Cook Experience

The absolute highlight of our Destin getaway was our experience with Captain Brandy’s Catch & Cook Private Charter. We embarked on a 4-hour private fishing trip specifically tailored for beginners, which made it perfect for families with children. Even if you’ve never fished before, this is an accessible and exciting way to experience Destin’s waters.

Before the main fishing activity began, everyone participated in catching their own bait. I was genuinely impressed by how quickly Maddie, Sammy, and Soon picked it up – they were practically bait-catching pros by the end of it! It was a fun and engaging way to start our fishing adventure.

We did encounter some rain during our boat trip, but the boat was equipped with a comfortable indoor area where we could stay dry and continue enjoying the experience. Soon even caught a red snapper, which, though we had to release it back into the water due to regulations, was still an incredibly exciting moment for him and a great learning opportunity. We all learned so much during the boat ride, making it not just fun but also educational. I truly believe this private charter is an ideal day activity for families visiting Destin and looking for a unique and memorable experience.

Upon our return to shore, our fresh catch was expertly prepared by East Pass Seafood & Oyster House. This fantastic restaurant takes your freshly caught fish and transforms it into a delicious meal. We were able to relax and savor appetizers while our fish was being prepared. The fish we caught was cooked three different ways: blackened, grilled, and fried, offering a variety of flavors and textures. It was served family-style on a platter with tasty side dishes, and every bite was absolutely delicious. This “catch and cook” experience is a must-do in Destin, combining adventure with a fresh and rewarding meal.

More Destin Activities for Families

While we didn’t get a chance to go paddle boarding on this trip, I know it’s an extremely popular activity in Destin, and it’s definitely on our list for next time! Destin’s calm waters are perfect for paddle boarding, offering a fun workout and beautiful views of the coastline.

As I mentioned earlier, the Little Adventures Program is truly the best resource for planning your Destin itinerary. Through them, you can discover and book a wide range of activities, including land adventures, exciting water excursions, various fishing trips, family-friendly museums, local events, and so much more. They truly cater to all interests and age groups, ensuring there’s something for everyone in the family.

Instead of paddle boarding, we opted for an early dinner one evening and then spent some time snorkeling the following day. If your kids love being in the water, I highly recommend bringing snorkeling masks. It’s such an affordable and low-key activity that is still a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. The clear waters of Destin are ideal for snorkeling, allowing you to explore the underwater world and spot local marine life.

Delicious Dining: Where to Eat and Drink in Destin, Florida

I’ve compiled a comprehensive list of my Destin restaurant recommendations on Yelp, but I wanted to highlight some standout dining experiences from our recent trip that are perfect for families and food lovers alike.

The Gulf Okaloosa Island: Beachfront Bliss

Our first food stop was at The Gulf Okaloosa Island, and I would rate it a perfect 10/10. The ambiance was absolutely stunning, the food incredibly fresh, and the drinks were fantastic. You have the option to dine at traditional tables or enjoy your meal right on the sand, adding a fun and unique element to the dining experience. The relaxed, beachfront setting is perfect for families and offers beautiful views.

We ordered the flavorful mahi bowl, a refreshing mixed salad topped with grouper, the delicious smoked fish dip, and a sparkling grapefruit drink – all were exceptional choices!

The Donut Hole: A Destin Institution

During my pre-trip research for dining recommendations in Destin, The Donut Hole kept appearing on every list. My husband took an early morning run to pick up some treats, and I can confirm that it absolutely lives up to the hype. Sammy particularly loved the blueberry donut, and we also highly recommend the cheese and bacon omelette and the cinnamon apples – must-order items for a delightful breakfast or brunch. This local favorite is a must-visit for any Destin travel guide.

Fish On Seafood House: Fresh and Friendly

We stopped for a bite at Fish On Seafood House and were impressed by the freshness of everything we ordered. The service was also exceptional – definitely a great spot to visit with a group. Don’t leave without trying the flavorful crab cakes, the hearty Cioppino, and the refreshing Greek salad.

LuLu’s: Dinner and Entertainment Combined

If you’re looking to combine dinner with entertainment, LuLu’s is your best bet for a fun-filled night out. This lively spot offers live music, games for all ages, delicious food, and festive drinks. Some of our favorite dishes were the seafood trio with red snapper, grilled shrimp, and oysters, the flavorful jerk chicken sandwich, the comforting shrimp and grits, and the refreshing shrimp salad with fried green tomatoes. Be prepared to leave feeling very full – but trust me, it’s completely worth it! LuLu’s provides a complete Destin experience, perfect for families seeking fun and good food.

The Back Porch: Oysters and Ocean Views

If you’re in the mood for oysters, make sure you make a reservation at The Back Porch. Their oysters were incredibly flavorful and fresh! The kids were big fans of the Florida sunshine cake, a delightful orange cake with layers of orange mousse and white chocolate icing – a sweet ending to a delicious meal. The Back Porch offers a classic Destin seafood experience with beautiful ocean views.

Boshamps Seafood & Oyster House: Worth the Wait

We attempted to get a table at Boshamps Seafood & Oyster House twice without success, but the third time was indeed the charm! It was definitely worth the wait and will be at the top of my list for our next Destin visit. This popular spot is known for its fresh seafood and lively atmosphere.

The sautéed crab claws, the grilled grouper sandwich, the wedge salad with grilled shrimp, the pan-seared snapper pasta, and the oysters Rockefeller were all part of our order (and all were amazing). Everything at Boshamps is homemade and organic, which is an added bonus for health-conscious diners.
