Welcome to the ultimate Classic WoW Alchemy Leveling Guide! If you’re looking to master the art of potion and elixir crafting in Classic World of Warcraft, you’ve come to the right place. This guide will walk you through the fastest and most cost-effective path to level your Alchemy skill from 1 to 300.
Alchemy pairs exceptionally well with Herbalism. By combining these two professions, you can gather your own herbs and significantly reduce the gold you spend on materials from the Auction House. Consider checking out our Classic Herbalism leveling guide 1-300 to level up your herbalism alongside alchemy!
If you’re still on your journey to level 60, or perhaps starting a new character, we highly recommend Zygor’s 1-60 Leveling Guide. It’s a fantastic resource to accelerate your leveling process and reach level 60 much faster.

Approximate Materials Required:
Keep in mind that many recipes in this guide will be yellow when you craft them, meaning you won’t gain a skill point every single time. To account for this, we’ve added approximately 10-20 extra herbs for most recipes. However, depending on your luck, you might need to gather or purchase a few more herbs to reach your desired skill level.
Playing Cataclysm Classic?
If you’re playing Cataclysm Classic, please use our dedicated Cataclysm Alchemy Leveling Guide. There are key differences in trainers and recipes between Classic and Cataclysm, so the Cataclysm guide will be more accurate and efficient for you.
Classic Alchemy Trainers
To begin your Alchemy journey, you’ll need to find an Alchemy trainer. They can teach you the basics and help you advance your skill. You can find Alchemy trainers in most major cities in Classic WoW. If you’re unsure where to look, simply ask a guard in any city for directions to the Alchemy trainer, and they’ll mark it on your map with a red flag.
Horde trainers:
- Algernon in Undercity
- Apothecary Antonivich in Undercity
- Krugosh in Orgrimmar
- Brunna Ironaxe in Thunder Bluff
Alliance trainers:
- Ainethil in Darnassus
- Tannin Dobbler in Ironforge
- Lilly Trapp in Stormwind City
- সেলডন in Exodar (Added in later phases, check availability)
Leveling Classic Alchemy 1-300
Follow these steps to efficiently level your Alchemy skill from 1 to 300. This guide prioritizes readily available recipes and materials to ensure a smooth and inexpensive leveling experience.
1 – 60
-
65 x Minor Healing Potion
- Materials: 65 Peacebloom, 65 Sliverleaf, 65 Empty Vial
Craft Minor Healing Potions until you reach skill level 60. These potions require common starting herbs and are a great way to kickstart your Alchemy skill. Importantly, you’ll need to keep these Minor Healing Potions as they will be used later in the guide for further skill gains.
Learn Journeyman Alchemy
Once you reach Alchemy skill level 50, and your character is level 10 or higher, you can learn Journeyman Alchemy, which allows you to progress beyond skill level 75. Not all Alchemy trainers teach Journeyman level, you’ll need to seek out an Expert Alchemist.
You can learn Journeyman Alchemy from these NPCs:
Horde trainers:
- Algernon in Undercity
- Apothecary Antonivich in Undercity
Alliance trainers:
- Ainethil in Darnassus
- Tannin Dobbler in Ironforge
60 – 140
-
80 x Healing Potion
- Materials: 80 Bruiseweed, 80 Briarthorn, 80 Leaded Vial
Healing Potions are your next stepping stone. Continue crafting these until you reach skill level 140. Bruiseweed and Briarthorn are commonly found in zones suitable for levels 10-20, making them easily accessible.
-
110 – 140 (If needed): You can continue making Healing Potions or transition to Greater Healing Potion earlier if you have access to Liferoot and Kingsblood. However, sticking with Healing Potions until 140 is usually more cost-effective.
Expert Alchemy
To progress past Alchemy skill level 150, you’ll need to become an Expert Alchemist. This requires character level 20. Again, not all trainers can teach you this level; you must find an Artisan Alchemist.
Horde players can learn Expert Alchemy from Doctor Herbert Halsey in Undercity. Alliance players can learn it from Ainethil in Darnassus.
Recipe to Buy
Before leaving Darnassus or Undercity after training Expert Alchemy, make sure to purchase the Recipe: Superior Mana Potion. You will need this recipe later around skill level 265, so buying it now will save you a trip back later.
The recipe is sold by Ulthir in Darnassus and Algernon in Undercity. It’s a limited supply item, so if it’s out of stock, check back periodically or purchase it from the Auction House.
140 – 155
-
20 x Lesser Mana Potion
- Materials: 20 Mageroyal, 20 Stranglekelp, 20 Empty Vial
Lesser Mana Potions will help you bridge the gap to higher skill levels. This recipe might turn yellow towards the end of this range, so you might need to craft a few extra to reach 155.
-
Alternative: If Stranglekelp is scarce or expensive, consider making Fire Oil if Firefin Snapper is cheap. You could also continue making Healing Potions.
155 – 185
-
- Materials: 35 Liferoot, 35 Kingsblood, 35 Leaded Vial
Greater Healing Potions become your primary recipe for this skill range. Liferoot and Kingsblood are commonly found in zones suitable for levels 20-30.
-
Alternative: If you crafted Fire Oil earlier, you can now use it to create Elixir of Firepower.
185 – 210
-
30 x Elixir of Agility
- Materials: 30 Stranglekelp, 30 Goldthorn, 30 Leaded Vial
Elixir of Agility is a solid choice for this range. Stranglekelp and Goldthorn are found in level 30-40 zones.
-
Alternatives:
- If Goldthorn is limited, craft Mana Potion or Lesser Invisibility Potion up to skill level 195.
- If you lack Goldthorn entirely, you can make Nature Protection Potion from skill level 190-215. The Recipe: Nature Protection Potion is sold by various vendors and is a limited supply item.
Artisan Alchemy
To continue your Alchemy training beyond skill level 225, you must learn Artisan Alchemy. This requires character level 35. You’ll need to seek out a Master Alchemist to learn this skill.
Horde players can learn Artisan Alchemy from Rogvar in Stonard, Swamp of Sorrows.
Alliance players can learn it from Kylanna Windwhisper in Feathermoon Stronghold, Feralas.
210 – 265
-
- Materials: 55 Sungrass, 55 Khadgar’s Whisker, 55 Crystal Vial
Superior Healing Potions are your go-to recipe for a significant portion of this range. Sungrass and Khadgar’s Whisker are common in level 35-45 zones. Craft these until you reach skill level 265.
265 – 285
-
30 x Superior Mana Potion
- Materials: 60 Sungrass, 60 Blindweed, 30 Crystal Vial
Remember that Recipe: Superior Mana Potion you bought earlier? Now is the time to use it! Craft Superior Mana Potions to push towards the final stretch.
The recipe is sold by Ulthir in Darnassus and Algernon in Undercity. It is a limited supply item, so check vendors or the Auction House if needed. Hopefully, you already purchased it when you trained Expert Alchemy!
285 – 300
-
20 x Major Healing Potion
- Materials: 40 Golden Sansam, 20 Mountain Silversage, 20 Crystal Vial
Congratulations, you’re almost there! Major Healing Potions will take you from 285 to 300.
The recipe is sold by Evie Whirlbrew in Everlook, Winterspring. Recipe: Major Healing Potion is also a limited supply recipe, so you might need to wait for it to respawn or buy it from the Auction House.
Congratulations on reaching Alchemy skill level 300 in Classic WoW! You are now a Master Alchemist, capable of crafting powerful potions and elixirs.
