Yellowstone National Park, a jewel in America’s National Park system, is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife. Spanning an enormous area, it offers a plethora of experiences for every traveler. To help you navigate this vast park, we’ve tapped into the expertise of a local insider, Melynda Harrison. A freelance writer and content creator residing in the Greater Yellowstone Ecoregion, Melynda shares her invaluable tips to make your Yellowstone adventure truly exceptional. She is the voice behind TravelingMel.com and YellowstoneTrips.com and author of Ski Trails of Southwest Montana and the Yellowstone section of Fodor’s National Parks of the West.
Important Update (as of November 1, 2022): Following the severe flooding of the Yellowstone River in June 2022, access to certain park entrances has been affected. However, both the north and northeast entrances are now open to normal vehicle traffic. The north entrance road (Gardiner, Montana, to Mammoth Hot Springs) has been rerouted via the Old Gardiner Road. Normal winter access from Gardiner to Cooke City is expected, maintaining year-round access on this route. The communities of Gardiner and Cooke City-Silver Gate are excited to welcome visitors once again.
Discovering Yellowstone: An Insider’s Perspective
Melynda’s deep connection with Yellowstone began in 1995 during a winter trip while studying in Missoula, Montana. Cross-country skiing and camping in the park’s winter wonderland left an indelible mark, solidifying her love for Yellowstone’s unique beauty. Now, after living in the Greater Yellowstone Ecoregion since 1997, she uses her extensive knowledge to assist others in planning their perfect Yellowstone getaway.
Yellowstone’s Grand Scale: Prepare to be Amazed
One of the most common surprises for first-time visitors is the sheer size of Yellowstone National Park. Covering 3,472 square miles, it’s larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined. Melynda emphasizes, “Visitors sometimes want to see ‘everything’ in a day and then drive to Glacier National Park (7 hours away). It takes a long time to get around Yellowstone. That’s part of its beauty.” With a maximum speed limit of 45 mph within the park and potential wildlife-induced traffic jams (“bison jams” or “bear jams”), plan your यात्रा accordingly and embrace the journey.
Choosing Your Yellowstone Entrance: A Matter of Itinerary
Yellowstone boasts five distinct entrances, each offering unique access points and nearby attractions. Instead of favoring one, Melynda recommends experiencing different areas of the park to minimize driving. “I usually recommend people stay in at least two different places during their trip. Otherwise, it just so much driving. So, maybe enter through the North or West Entrance and work your way south.”
Consider these entrance points when planning your route:
- North Entrance (Gardiner, Montana): Open year-round, providing access to Mammoth Hot Springs and the northern range. Historic Roosevelt Arch marks the park’s original entrance.
- West Entrance (West Yellowstone, Montana): Busiest entrance, gateway to geyser basins like Old Faithful and Midway Geyser Basin. Town of West Yellowstone offers numerous amenities.
- South Entrance (Grand Teton National Park/Jackson, Wyoming): Connects Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, ideal for exploring both parks in one trip. Access to Yellowstone Lake and geyser basins.
- East Entrance (Cody, Wyoming): Scenic drive through the Shoshone National Forest, access to Yellowstone Lake and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
- Northeast Entrance (Cooke City/Silver Gate, Montana): Access to Lamar Valley, known for wildlife viewing, and Beartooth Highway (seasonal).
Yellowstone Accommodation: From Budget to Luxe
Securing lodging within Yellowstone National Park is highly recommended for an immersive experience. Melynda advises, “If it is at all possible to stay inside the park, do it! You need to make a hotel reservation a year in advance or be ready to call and ask about cancellations repeatedly.” Gateway towns like Gardiner and West Yellowstone offer convenient alternatives just outside the park boundaries. Cody, Wyoming, is another option, though it’s approximately an hour’s drive to the park.
Accommodation Options:
- Budget: Camping within Yellowstone’s campgrounds provides an affordable and adventurous option. Roosevelt Lodge and Lake Hotel offer cabins at more accessible price points.
- Mid-Range: Yellowstone’s in-park hotels, while pricier than typical mid-range hotels, offer unparalleled convenience and historical charm. Book well in advance!
- Luxe: For luxury experiences near Yellowstone, consider Sage Lodge in Paradise Valley (north of the park) or explore high-end hotels and vacation rentals in Jackson, Wyoming, Paradise Valley, or outside West Yellowstone/Island Park.
Dining Around Yellowstone: Local Flavors
While campfire cooking is a classic camping experience, exploring local restaurants around Yellowstone is a treat. Melynda recommends these favorites:
- Madison Crossing (West Yellowstone): Known for its diverse menu and local ingredients.
- Campione (Livingston): Offers Italian cuisine in a charming setting.
- Snake River Grill (Jackson): Upscale dining experience featuring regional American dishes.
