Discover the NIOSH Pocket Guide: Your Essential Workplace Chemical Safety Tool

For decades, the Niosh Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards (NPG) has stood as a cornerstone resource for ensuring worker safety. Created by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), this invaluable guide provides crucial information about workplace chemicals and their potential hazards, empowering workers, employers, and occupational health professionals alike.

First launched in 1978 in collaboration with OSHA, the NIOSH Pocket Guide has evolved through six editions, consistently adapting to the needs of its users. Today, beyond the trusted printed booklet, the NPG is readily accessible in both an online version and a user-friendly mobile app, the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards App (mNPG). NIOSH ensures free access to this vital tool through CDC-INFO. The widespread demand is evident, with over 671,000 printed copies and nearly 639,000 CD-ROM versions distributed. In 2021, it ranked as the second most downloaded NIOSH document, a testament to its enduring relevance and utility, even before considering the extensive use of its online and mobile formats.

The development of the mobile app in 2016 was a user-centric process from the outset. NIOSH actively sought user feedback through blog engagement, including the post “Help! What do you want from a mobile Pocket Guide?”. The 157 comments received directly shaped the mNPG, ensuring it met the practical needs of its users. In 2021 alone, the app was downloaded approximately 84,000 times, highlighting its value in the field.

The mobile app expands the functionality of the NIOSH Pocket Guide, offering features designed for rapid access and ease of use:

  • Versatile Search: Users can quickly search for chemicals by name, trade name, synonym, DOT number, or CAS number.
  • Personalized Favorites: Save frequently accessed chemical records for instant retrieval.
  • Customizable Data Views: Tailor how chemical data is displayed for optimal readability.
  • Comprehensive Chemical Information: Access critical data including physical properties, health hazards, first aid measures, respirator and personal protective equipment (PPE) recommendations, and relevant regulatory information.

Despite the digital advancements, the printed NIOSH Pocket Guide remains indispensable. Emergency responders often rely on hard copies in vehicles, and a physical guide is crucial when internet access or cell service is unavailable, especially during emergencies or power outages. Recognizing the 40th anniversary of the NPG in 2018, NIOSH initiated a redesign, again incorporating user feedback gathered through the blog post “Help Us Redesign the NIOSH Pocket Guide” and focus groups. The resulting 6th edition reflected these valuable insights, and the upcoming 7th edition in 2022 promises further updates and enhancements.

As NIOSH celebrates its 50th anniversary, the Pocket Guide stands as a prime example of its commitment to workplace safety. The true impact of the NIOSH Pocket Guide is best articulated by its users:
