Classic WoW Engineering Leveling Guide (1-300)

This Classic WoW Engineering Leveling Guide will show you the fastest and easiest way to increase your Engineering skill from level 1 to 300 in Classic World of Warcraft.

Engineering is ideally paired with Mining. Leveling Engineering and Mining together will significantly reduce the gold you need to spend, as you’ll be able to gather many of the required materials yourself. If you’re also leveling Mining, be sure to check out our Classic Mining Leveling Guide 1-300. If you choose not to level Mining, you will need to purchase all necessary materials from the Auction House or vendors.

If you’re still in the process of leveling your character, or starting a new alt, consider using Zygor’s 1-60 Leveling Guide to reach level 60 much faster.

Cataclysm Classic Engineering Note

Please be aware that there are significant changes to trainers and recipes in Cataclysm Classic. If you are playing Cataclysm Classic, you should follow our dedicated Cataclysm Engineering Leveling Guide instead for the most accurate and efficient leveling process.

Finding Classic WoW Engineering Trainers

You can learn Classic Engineering from any of the Engineering Trainers listed below once you reach level 5.

Click on any of the trainer links to see their exact location. Alternatively, you can ask any city guard for directions to the Engineering trainer, and their location will be marked on your map with a red flag.

For efficient leveling, especially to level 200, it is recommended to start your training in Orgrimmar (Horde) or Ironforge (Alliance). These cities have trainers who can teach you up to Expert Engineering, allowing you to stay in one location until skill level 200. Trainers in other major cities typically only teach Journeyman recipes, eventually requiring you to travel to Orgrimmar or Ironforge anyway for higher skill levels.

Horde Engineering Trainers:

Alliance Engineering Trainers:

Leveling Engineering in Classic WoW (1-300)

To begin, purchase a Blacksmith Hammer from a Blacksmithing or Engineering supply vendor, usually located near your trainer. You can also find these at general or trade goods vendors.

Gnome Engineering Racial Bonus

Gnome characters benefit from a +15 Engineering skill bonus due to their racial passive Engineering Specialization. This bonus means recipes will remain orange (guaranteed skill-up) for 15 skill points longer, which can save you gold by allowing you to gain more skill points from lower-level recipes.

Apprentice Engineering (1 – 75)

  • 1 – 30: 30 x Handful of Copper Bolts – 30 Copper Bar. You will need approximately 30 of these later, so it’s useful to make them now.

  • 30 – 50: 30 x Rough Copper Bomb – 30 Copper Bar, 30 Handful of Copper Bolts, 60 Rough Blasting Powder, 30 Linen Cloth.

  • 50 – 75: Continue making Rough Copper Bomb or consider crafting Copper Modulator if you have extra materials. Rough Copper Bomb is generally more material-efficient for skill-ups in this range.

Journeyman Engineering (75 – 150)

To train Engineering beyond level 75, you must learn Journeyman Engineering from an Expert Engineer. This requires character level 10. Not all Engineering trainers offer this level of training.

You can learn Journeyman Engineering from these NPCs:

Horde Journeyman Trainers:

Alliance Journeyman Trainers:

  • 75 – 90: 60 x Coarse Blasting Powder – 60 Coarse Stone. Keep these as they will be needed later.

  • 90 – 100: 20 x Arclight Spanner – 20 Bronze Bar, 20 Coarse Blasting Powder. These are useful tools for Engineers.

  • 100 – 105: 5 x Silver Contact – 5 Silver Bar. If Silver Bar is expensive on your server, consider making fewer of these.

  • 105 – 125: 25 x Bronze Tube – 50 Bronze Bar, 25 Weak Flux. Weak Flux is sold by Engineering Supply vendors near trainers.

  • 125 – 150: 40 x Crude Scope – 40 Bronze Bar, 40 Glass Vial. Alternatively, you can continue making Bronze Tubes until 135, and then switch to Crude Scope.

Expert Engineering (150 – 225)

To progress past Engineering skill 150, you must learn Expert Engineering. This requires character level 20 and must be learned from an Artisan Engineer.

Expert Engineering trainers are: Roxxik in Orgrimmar and Springspindle Fizzlegear in Ironforge.

  • 150 – 160: 15 x Bronze Framework – 30 Bronze Bar, 15 Medium Leather, 15 Wool Cloth. Keep these as they are used in later recipes. Crafting these may take you beyond 160, adjust accordingly and stop when they turn green to maximize material efficiency.

  • 160 – 175: 40 x Hand Cannon – 80 Bronze Bar, 40 Heavy Blasting Powder, 40 Wooden Stock.

  • 175 – 195: 60 x Solid Blasting Powder – 120 Solid Stone. Save these, you will need them later for higher level recipes.

  • 195 – 200: 7 x Mithril Tube – 21 Mithril Bar. Stop making these once you reach skill level 200. Keep at least 6 Mithril Tubes if you plan to choose Gnomish Engineering specialization at skill level 200.

  • 200 – 225: Consider crafting Target Dummy or Gyrochronatom to reach 225. The best recipe will depend on material prices on your server. Target Dummy is often a cheaper option.

Artisan Engineering (225 – 300)

To continue past Engineering skill 225, you must learn Artisan Engineering from a Master Engineer. This requires character level 35 or higher.

You can learn Artisan Engineering from Buzzek Bracketswing in Gadgetzan, Tanaris. He is located just outside the Inn, on the left side near the mailbox.

Engineering Specializations at 200

At Engineering skill level 200, you can choose to specialize in either Gnomish Engineering or Goblin Engineering. Certain items require a specific specialization to use, while others are crafted by one specialization but usable by any Engineer. Most crafted items from either specialization can be used by any Engineer regardless of specialization.

For detailed information on choosing a specialization, refer to our Engineering Specializations Guide.

  • 225 – 238: 40 x Mithril Casing – 120 Mithril Bar. Save these, as they are used in several useful recipes.

  • 238 – 250: 40 x Mithril Blunderbuss – 120 Mithril Bar, 40 Solid Blasting Powder, 40 Wooden Stock.

  • 250 – 260: 30 x Dense Blasting Powder – 60 Dense Stone. You may need to craft slightly more than 30 to reach skill level 260, depending on skill gains.

  • 260 – 285: 75 x Thorium Widget – 75 Thorium Bar, 75 Runecloth.

  • 285 – 300: 20 x Thorium Tube – 120 Thorium Bar. Schematic: Thorium Tube is sold by Xizzer Fizzbolt in Everlook, Winterspring, in the first building on the right.

Congratulations on reaching Engineering skill level 300 in Classic WoW! We hope you found this Classic Engineering leveling guide helpful. Now you can explore the many gadgets and devices Engineering has to offer!
