Southeastern Guide Dogs (SEGD) stands as a beacon of hope and independence, a distinguished 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing expertly trained service dogs across the United States. For over three decades, SEGD has been transforming lives by offering these invaluable canine partners at no cost to individuals facing visual impairments and to active-duty and veteran military personnel grappling with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Beyond this, numerous SEGD-raised pups have extended their compassionate reach as facility therapy dogs within military hospitals, bringing joy and encouragement to wounded service members on their paths to recovery.
Our Mission: Cultivating Compassion and Canine Excellence
The heart of SEGD beats within local communities like Houston, where dedicated volunteers form a supportive network to nurture future service dogs. From the tender age of eight weeks to approximately one year, these puppies embark on a journey of learning and socialization, guided by a comprehensive training regimen encompassing dozens of commands. Houston’s chapter thrives on the collective wisdom of experienced raisers, online resources, and the guidance of area coordinators, fostering a collaborative and enriching environment.
After a year filled with growth and learning in Houston, these promising young dogs return to Southeastern Guide Dogs’ main campus in Palmetto, Florida. Here, professional trainers meticulously evaluate each dog to determine their optimal career path. Following further specialized training tailored to their designated role—be it as a guide dog or service dog—they are carefully matched with their “forever person.” This marks the beginning of a life-changing partnership, where these dogs dedicate their exceptional abilities to assisting individuals in need, embodying the profound impact of Southeast Guide Dogs’ mission.
