Leveling WotLK Engineering 1-450
First, buy a Blacksmith Hammer from a Blacksmith supply vendor, usually located near your trainer, or any general/trade goods vendor.
Gnome Engineering Racial Bonus
Gnome characters gain +15 Engineering skill thanks to their passive Engineering Specialization. This bonus allows recipes to stay orange for 15 extra skill points, potentially saving you gold by crafting lower-level recipes for longer.
1 – 75: Apprentice Engineering
- 1 – 30 30x Handful of Copper Bolts – 30 Copper Bar. You will need approximately 30 of these later, so keep them.
- 30 – 75 50x Rough Copper Bomb – 50 Copper Bar, 50 Handful of Copper Bolts, 100 Rough Blasting Powder, 50 Linen Cloth
Journeyman Engineering (75 – 150)
Visit your trainer and learn Journeyman Engineering. (Requires level 10)
75 – 150: Journeyman Engineering
- 75 – 90 20x Coarse Dynamite – 60 Coarse Blasting Powder, 20 Linen Cloth
- 90 – 120 30x Coarse Dynamite – 90 Coarse Blasting Powder, 30 Linen Cloth
- 120 – 150 40x Bronze Tube – 80 Bronze Bar, 40 Weak Flux. Weak Flux is sold by Engineering Supply vendors near trainers.
Expert Engineering (150 – 225)
Visit your trainer again to learn Expert Engineering. (Requires level 20)
150 – 225: Expert Engineering
- 150 – 170 25x Bronze Framework – 50 Bronze Bar, 25 Medium Leather, 25 Wool Cloth. Keep these as you might need them later. Craft more if needed to reach 170.
- 170 – 175 5x Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor – 20 Steel Bar. Keep these; you’ll need them for future Engineering recipes.
- 175 – 200 30x Mithril Tube – 90 Mithril Bar. Stop crafting at 200 skill. Keep at least 6 Mithril Tubes if you plan to choose Gnomish Engineering at skill level 200.
- 200 – 225 40x Bronze Framework – 80 Bronze Bar, 40 Medium Leather, 40 Wool Cloth. Alternatively, continue crafting Mithril Tube if you have the materials.
Artisan Engineering (225 – 300)
Visit your trainer to become an Artisan Engineer. (Requires level 35)
At Engineering skill level 200, you can specialize in either Gnomish Engineering or Goblin Engineering. Some items require a specific specialization to use, while others can be crafted by one specialization and used by any engineer. Luckily, most recipes crafted by one specialization can be used by both.

225 – 300: Artisan Engineering
- 225 – 245 30x Mithril Casing – 90 Mithril Bar. Save these, you will need them.
- 245 – 265 30x Dense Blasting Powder – 60 Dense Stone. Keep at least 15 of these for later use at skill level 285. You might need to craft more than 30 to reach 265.
- 265 – 285 30x Mithril Casing – 90 Mithril Bar. Use the Mithril Casing you saved earlier.
- 285 – 300 20x Thorium Shells – 40 Thorium Bar, 20 Dense Blasting Powder. Use the Dense Blasting Powder you saved.

- 315 – 320 10x Fel Iron Bomb – 10 Fel Iron Casing, 20 Handful of Fel Iron Bolts, 10 Elemental Blasting Powder. You might need to craft a few more Fel Iron Bomb if you don’t reach 320 skill.
- 320 – 325 10x Fel Iron Bomb – 10 Fel Iron Casing, 20 Handful of Fel Iron Bolts, 10 Elemental Blasting Powder. You might need more depending on skill point gains.
- 325 – 335 10x Adamantite Grenade – 40 Adamantite Bar, 20 Handful of Fel Iron Bolts, 10 Elemental Blasting Powder

375 – 450: Grand Master Engineering
- 375 – 385 50x Handful of Cobalt Bolts – 50 Cobalt Bar, and 24x Volatile Blasting Trigger later. Craft these now, and you should reach 385 or higher. Ensure you craft Handful of Cobalt Bolts before Volatile Blasting Trigger. Volatile Blasting Trigger stays yellow longer, making it better to craft later. Note that crafting Handful of Cobalt Bolts can yield 1-3 bolts, and Volatile Blasting Trigger yields 2 per craft. Save both of these.
- 385 – 390 7x Explosive Decoy – 7 Frostweave Cloth, 21 Volatile Blasting Trigger. You may need to craft a few more.
- 390 – 400 15x Handful of Cobalt Bolts – 15 Cobalt Bar. Use the bolts you crafted earlier.
- 400 – 405 5x Diamond-cut Refractor Scope – 5 Froststeel Tube, 10 Handful of Cobalt Bolts
- 405 – 410 7x Handful of Cobalt Bolts – 7 Cobalt Bar. Use any remaining bolts.
- 410 – 415 5x Goblin Beam Welder – 30 Saronite Bar, 15 Crystallized Fire, 15 Crystallized Water
- 415 – 425 15x Handful of Cobalt Bolts – 15 Cobalt Bar. If you still need skill points to reach 425, craft more bolts.
- 425 – 430 7x Mechanized Snow Goggles – 56 Saronite Bar, 14 Borean Leather, 7 Eternal Shadow. If you are a Goblin Engineer, consider crafting Global Thermal Sapper Charge between 425-430. If you plan to craft the portable mailbox MOLL-E, craft it at 429, as it guarantees a skill point. Goggles may turn green soon, reducing skill point chance at 429.
430 – 450: Final Stretch
- 430 – 450 30x Blacksmith Hammer from Bryan Landers near your trainer. Skinning Knife is sold by Ranid Glowergold.
Epic Engineering Goggles and Wormhole Generator
If you aim to level Engineering to 450 and not stop at 440, crafting the Wormhole Generator: Northrend and your epic Engineering Helm at 448 is recommended. Gnomish Army Knife turns green at 445, requiring many crafts for the last 2 points (sometimes 10-20 per point). However, Goggles and Wormhole Generator: Northrend stay orange until 450, potentially saving gold. If you don’t need the goggles, craft the Wormhole Generator: Northrend at 449.
