Pallet Town: Beginnings of a Pokémon Master

Pallet Town, your quaint starting point, sets the stage for your grand adventure. This peaceful town, known for its red-roofed houses and the presence of the esteemed Professor Oak, is where your Pokémon journey truly begins. It’s surprisingly tranquil, considering it’s home to the region’s leading Pokémon expert.

Before venturing out, interact with the PC in your room, access ‘Item Storage’, and retrieve the Potion. Descend to the ground floor where your mother resides. She offers simple encouragement, acknowledging the common rite of passage for children in the Pokémon world: embarking on a Pokémon journey.

Stepping outside, you might encounter a local fascinated by the sign detailing how to access the menu with the START button – a testament to the novelty of technology even in this world. A visit to your rival’s house to the east reveals his sister, who mentions his whereabouts at Professor Oak’s lab. Upon reaching the lab at the town’s edge, your rival confirms Oak’s absence. Intriguingly, Oak appears just as you approach the town’s northern exit, cautioning about the dangers of venturing out unprepared. He then escorts you to his lab, setting the stage for a pivotal moment: choosing your first Pokémon.

Here, you face the classic choice: Bulbasaur (Grass), Squirtle (Water), or Charmander (Fire).

Make your selection carefully, considering your preferred playstyle. After choosing, you may want to reset to obtain your desired gender and nature for your starter – a common practice among dedicated trainers. Once satisfied, attempt to leave the lab, and your rival will intercept you, initiating your first Pokémon battle. Professor Oak provides a brief tutorial on Pokémon battling before you engage.

Rival Battle

Pokémon: Bulbasaur/Charmander/Squirtle Lv. 5

Your rival will always choose the Pokémon with a type advantage over yours. Despite this, victory is attainable as neither Pokémon initially knows a type-specific attack. Triumph earns you 80 Pokédollars. Professor Oak congratulates you, and the path to Route 1 opens.

Route 1: From Pallet Town to Viridian City

Pokémon Encounters: Rattata, Pidgey

Route 1, characterized by its upbeat, somewhat grating music and abundant grass, serves as a brief introductory path.

It’s remarkably straightforward. Navigate through the initial patch of tall grass, veering left to engage any wild Pokémon. Speak to the gentleman in the apron to receive a Potion. Turn right, traverse the rectangular grass patch, and proceed left and upwards through the ledge opening. Turn right again, ascend through two more grass patches, and slightly left to reach the road leading to Viridian City.

Viridian City: The Eternally Green Paradise

Viridian City lives up to its name, awash in greenery with bushes and green-roofed houses. A peculiar sight greets you: an elderly man prone in the middle of the road, seemingly blocking passage due to a lack of coffee. The city’s music offers a richer, more detailed rendition compared to the original games, yet retains a familiar essence.

Upon entering, heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center. Investigate the prone old man, then enter the Poké Mart. The clerk immediately recognizes you and entrusts you with a Parcel intended for Professor Oak. He declines to sell you any items until the delivery is made.

Route 1: Pallet Town Revisited

Pokémon Encounters: Rattata, Pidgey

This return trip offers a faster route. Leap down the ledges to bypass wild Pokémon encounters and quickly traverse the grass back to Pallet Town.

Pallet Town: Parcel Delivery and Pokédex

If your Pokémon sustained any damage, visit your mother for healing. Otherwise, proceed directly to Oak’s lab. Speak with him, and he’ll commend your talent. The Parcel is automatically delivered, and your rival promptly arrives.

Oak reveals his intention to bestow Pokédexes upon both of you. He presents you with a Pokédex and, unlike the original games, generously provides five Poké Balls.

He laments his age preventing him from completing the Pokédex himself. Your rival, in a display of competitive arrogance, declares his self-sufficiency and intentions to acquire a Town Map from his sister, boasting that you won’t receive one. However, upon visiting his house, you’ll find his sister readily offers you a Town Map, proving his reverse psychology. Now, it’s time to return to Route 1 once more.

Route 1: Catching Pokémon En Route to Viridian City

Pokémon Encounters: Rattata, Pidgey

This familiar route now presents an opportunity to catch wild Pokémon. Equipped with Poké Balls, you can capture Rattata and Pidgey along the way.

Viridian City: Coffee and Catching Tutorials

Heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center and consider purchasing additional Poké Balls. The old man is now standing, having had his coffee, and offers a tutorial on catching Pokémon, demonstrating on a Weedle. He also gifts you the Teachy TV, hosted by the amusing “Poké Dude,” offering helpful lessons for novice and experienced trainers alike.

Explore the city further. Head west, turn north at the first opportunity, and follow the narrow path to a Poké Ball-like item on the ground. It’s a Potion, cleverly disguised.

Return south and continue west, proceeding to Route 22.

Route 22: To the Indigo Plateau

Pokémon Encounters: Rattata, Mankey, Spearow

Route 22, while not essential to the main storyline, offers unique encounters and a challenging rival battle. Its music, especially the remix, is notable. It leads to a secluded area.

Catching a Mankey in the initial grass patch is recommended. After some training, proceed north. The lower path is a dead end. Save your game before heading west.

Rival Battle

Pokémon: Pidgey Lv. 9, Bulbasaur/Charmander/Squirtle Lv. 9

This battle is more challenging. Your rival’s Pidgey can use Sand-Attack, which can lower your accuracy. Preserve your strongest Pokémon until Pidgey is defeated. Afterwards, return east to Viridian City.

Viridian City: Path to Pewter City

Heal your Pokémon and proceed north. You can briefly explore the locked Gym to the east, but it’s inaccessible for now. Continue north towards Route 2.

Route 2: Viridian City to Pewter City

Pokémon Encounters: Rattata, Pidgey, Caterpie, Weedle

Route 2 shares the same music as Route 1 and features a single patch of grass and trees that require Cut, an HM you don’t yet possess.

Continue north and enter the large building, a gateway to Viridian Forest.

Viridian Forest: A Natural Maze

Pokémon Encounters: Weedle, Caterpie, Kakuna, Metapod, Pikachu

Viridian Forest is an atmospheric location with eerie, mysterious music and first-person perspectives that showcase light filtering through the trees. It’s a genuine maze, easy to get lost in initially.

Upon entering, interact with the left side of the large tree in front of the Youngster to find an Antidote. Take the left path and then north to find an item. Return and take the right path from the entrance. Collect the item in the grass patch to the far right, then proceed north. Choose either path, continue until they converge, and turn right. Go north, turn left, battle the trainer, continue, go south, ignore the right path, continue south, left, north, left, battle another trainer, south, right, collect an item, left, north, battle a third trainer. Interact with the grass tile next to the trees opposite the trainer to find a Potion. Continue north to reach another gateway.

Route 2: Viridian Forest Exit to Pewter City

Pokémon Encounters: Rattata, Pidgey, Caterpie, Weedle

This section of Route 2 is very short. Turn slightly east and proceed directly north to reach Pewter City.

Pewter City: A Stone Gray City

Pewter City, with music similar to Viridian City but a distinct mood, features white houses with gray roofs, numerous trees, a museum, and Brock’s Gym. Brock, the Rock-Solid Pokémon Trainer, is your first Gym Leader challenge.

Heal your Pokémon. The museum offers Kabutops and Aerodactyl fossils, and the removed space shuttle name, for a 50P entrance fee. Train your Pokémon before challenging Brock.

When ready, go north past the Pokémon Center, turn west, then south, and back east to find the Pewter Gym.

Gym Trainer Battle – Camper Liam

Pokémon: Geodude Lv. 10, Sandshrew Lv. 11

Mankey’s Low Kick is effective against Geodude. Use other Pokémon, avoiding Pikachu, against Sandshrew. Victory here suggests you’re ready for Brock. Heal your Pokémon before proceeding.

Gym Leader Battle – Leader Brock

Pokémon: Geodude Lv. 12, Onix Lv. 14

Brock can be challenging, especially for Charmander starters. Squirtle and Bulbasaur have a type advantage. Charmander trainers and those seeking a non-type advantage strategy need to be strategic.

Use Growl on Geodude while it uses Defense Curl, then attack. Mankey’s Low Kick is highly effective against Onix due to its weight. Defeating Brock earns you the Boulder Badge.

Brock also gives you TM39, Rock Tomb. Professor Oak’s Aide outside the Gym entrance gives you Running Shoes from your mother, enabling running by holding B.

Route 3: Path to Mt. Moon

Pokémon Encounters: Pidgey, Spearow, Mankey, Jigglypuff, Nidoran♂, Nidoran♀

Route 3 is filled with trainers for experience. Battle them all, especially the Youngster just after the Bug Catcher from Viridian Forest – the “Shorts are comfy!” guy.

Past the trainers, a Lass says “Eek! Did you touch me?” regardless of your gender. The grass can be skipped if desired. Continue east past a grass patch and a non-trainer Youngster. Turn north.

Route 4: Pewter City to Cerulean City (Part 1)

Pokémon Encounters: None in this part

This sandy, rocky section of Route 4 has a Pokémon Center near the entrance to Mt. Moon.

Proceed north to the Pokémon Center. Heal, optionally buy a Magikarp for 500P from the salesman (Gyarados is worthwhile), and enter Mt. Moon.

Mount Moon: Home of Meteorites

Pokémon Encounters: Geodude, Zubat, Paras, Clefairy

Mt. Moon features “lonely” music and is filled with Pokémon, trainers, Team Rocket members, items, and fossils.

Go north then west. TM09, Bullet Seed, is on the right. North and slightly west is a Parlyz Heal. Battle the Bug Catcher to the right. Head east, battle the Lass (Clefairy knows Encore). Continue east, collect the Potion, then east to a Rare Candy. North and slightly west to battle another Bug Catcher. Return south and east, then north to an Escape Rope. Collect an Antidote and go up the stairs. Through the tunnel, up the stairs, and exit Mt. Moon.

Route 4: Mt. Moon Exit to Cerulean City (Part 2)

Pokémon Encounters: Rattata, Spearow, Mankey, Ekans (FR – FireRed), Sandshrew (LG – Leaf Green)

This grassy section of Route 4 has two Move Tutors.

East from the cave exit to two karate guys. The left teaches Mega Punch, the right Mega Kick. Jump down the ledge and east. North at the trees, slightly west and north to TM05, Roar. East, jump down to Cerulean City road. You’re now trapped from Mt. Moon until you get Fly. A grass patch south and west contains wild Pokémon. Otherwise, enter Cerulean City.

Cerulean City: Blue Aura of Mystery

Cerulean City, while disliked by some for its music and Water-type Gym, is essential for plot progression.

Heal your Pokémon. The Bike Shop offers a “BIKE 1,000,000” option, and a Slowbro replaced the girl’s Electrode. The Jynx-for-Poliwhirl trade is available, and Officer Jenny is outside the robbed house. Misty’s Gym and a Berry Crushing enthusiast are also present. Head to Nugget Bridge after healing, as your rival awaits.

Rival Battle

Pokémon: Pidgeotto Lv. 17, Abra Lv. 16, Bulbasaur/Charmander/Squirtle Lv. 18, Rattata Lv. 15

This is a challenging battle, especially Pidgeotto. Victory earns you a Fame Checker and comical rival dialogue. Heal your Pokémon and head to Nugget Bridge.

Route 24: Nugget Bridge

Pokémon Encounters: Abra, Oddish (FR – FireRed), Bellsprout (LG – Leaf Green), Caterpie, Kakuna, Pidgey, Weedle, Metapod

Route 24’s intro music sets an exciting tone. Nugget Bridge, though outside the main storyline, is a fun challenge.

Team Rocket Grunt Battle

Pokémon: Ekans Lv. 15, Zubat Lv. 15

He’s relatively easy, despite Zubat’s Supersonic. He tries to recruit you again afterwards. Heal your Pokémon.

West of Nugget Bridge, battle the trainer hiding in the grass. To catch Abra, simply throw a Poké Ball without weakening it.

North, collect TM45, Attract. Then head east to Route 25.

He enters the Teleporter, you use the computer to run the Cell Separator program. Bill returns to human form. Talk to him. He gives you an S.S. Ticket.

Her junior trainers are easy.

Gym Leader Battle – Gym Leader Misty

Pokémon: Staryu Lv. 18, Starmie Lv. 21

Misty claims an all-out offensive strategy, but her Starmie has Recover and she uses Super Potions. Poisonpowder from Butterfree or other poisoning moves can be effective due to AI weaknesses.

After defeating Misty and exiting the Gym, the girl with Slowbro and Officer Jenny are gone from the robbed house. Enter it.

The house is ransacked. Footprints (non-human) lead to a hole in the wall. Go through and talk to the suspicious man.

Team Rocket Grunt Battle

Pokémon: Machop Lv. 17, Drowzee Lv. 17

Easily defeated with a level 17 Pidgey. Watch out for Drowzee’s Hypnosis.

He drops TM28, Dig, which he stole. You keep it.

Route 5: Cerulean City to Saffron City

Pokémon Encounters: Pidgey, Meowth, Oddish (FR – FireRed), Bellsprout (LG – Leaf Green)

The bumpy path offers wild Meowth with Pickup ability, useful for finding items. A Day-Care is available, but only for one Pokémon.

Enter the leader’s room (heal first). Save, and talk to Lt. Surge.
