Finding Your Ideal BJJ Gi Fit: A Detailed Guide
Sanabul Gis are traditionally sized, which generally means they may run slightly larger than some other brands. This design choice allows for personal preference in how you wash and dry your Gi. When you first try on your new Gi, use this fit guide to assess the size.
Understanding Gi Fit
A well-fitting BJJ Gi provides enough room for movement without being excessively baggy. The key areas to check are the sleeve and pant cuff lengths. The following guidelines will help you determine if your Sanabul Gi is the right size.
Cuff Length – The Key Indicator
The cuff length is a primary indicator of proper Gi fit. Here’s how to evaluate the sleeve length by checking where the cuff falls in relation to your wrist bone:
1. Too Small
If the Gi cuff sits more than 2 inches before your wrist bone, it’s likely too small and considered too short. We recommend going a size up for a better fit.
2. Correct Size
A correctly sized Gi will have the cuff right at your wrist bone, or approximately 1.5 inches before or past it. This fit allows for comfortable movement and is ideal. For Gis with a correct fit, machine wash in cold water and hang dry to maintain the size.
3. Slightly Big
If the Gi cuff extends about 2-3 inches past your wrist bone, it’s slightly large. You can machine wash it in hot water and machine dry on high heat, checking every 10 minutes, to shrink it to the desired length. Once shrunk, subsequent washes should be in cold water and hang drying is recommended to maintain the adjusted size.
4. Too Big
A Gi that is too big will have a cuff that is more than 3 inches past your wrist bone. In this case, do not wash or use the Gi. Order a size smaller to ensure proper fit and compliance with regulations.
Important Note: If you find your Gi is too large before washing, please do not attempt to wash or dry it. Contact us to arrange an exchange for a smaller size.
