A Beginner’s Guide to Making Friends and Winning at Quidditch… Through Theater!

The Opposite of People (TOOP) at the U of R campus is more than just a student theater troupe; it’s a vibrant community where students forge lasting friendships, explore the magic of theater production, and build a network of arts-connected peers. For me, a member since my sophomore year, TOOP has become a boisterous and supportive family. What sets TOOP apart is its commitment to inclusivity – now open to all students regardless of skill level or experience. This welcoming environment allows individuals to develop their talents, explore new passions, and even discover unexpected career paths.

The Magic Behind the Curtain: TOOP’s Unique Structure

TOOP’s e-board operates differently than traditional student organizations. Instead of a President or Vice-President, the leadership is structured around key artistic roles: Artistic Director, Production Manager, Technical Director, Dramaturge, and more. These individuals are dedicated to ensuring the successful execution of staged readings and full plays each semester, even during challenging times like the Spring and Fall of 2020. Their commitment to creating accessible and engaging theater is truly remarkable.

Stepping into the Spotlight: Acting Opportunities for Everyone

As an acting major, I initially joined TOOP to perform. The audition process is refreshingly open and low-stress. Rehearsals are efficient, and tech week runs remarkably smoothly. The ultimate reward is the shows themselves, performed in venues like Drama House, the May Room, and even Todd Theater. These productions consistently draw large crowds of students, family, friends, and faculty. And, importantly, all TOOP shows are free, making theater accessible to everyone on campus.

Beyond Acting: A Stage for All Talents

TOOP offers a multitude of opportunities beyond acting. Aspiring directors can take the reins of a show, supported by co-directors and assistant directors if needed. The group also features a stage management track, providing invaluable experience in coordinating schedules and working with directors and actors. If writing is your passion, TOOP has a platform for you too, showcasing student-written plays and staged readings. The talent on display is truly inspiring, rivaling the work of seasoned playwrights.

Crafting Worlds: Design and Apprentice Programs

The designing and apprentice programs are another highlight of TOOP. Unlike other theater programs, TOOP allows students to design sets, lighting, costumes, and props for entire shows. Whether you have extensive experience or none at all, you can join the apprentice program or jump right in as a designer. I personally gained experience in sound and props design through TOOP, discovering new talents and expanding my skill set. This emphasis on both onstage and behind-the-scenes work makes TOOP a unique and enriching experience.

A Legacy of Memorable Performances

TOOP has a rich history of impressive productions, including masked filmed versions of Antigone, the combined works of Harold Pinter, the darkly funny Black Comedy by Peter Shaffer, several student-written works, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and preparations for Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. The shows are selected through a democratic voting process, with potential directors pitching their ideas to the entire group.

Finding Your Tribe: Join the TOOP Community

Beyond the shows, TOOP fosters a strong sense of community through social events like TOOP Fancy Brunch and fundraising weeks where they sell stickers to raise money for our shows. To find out more, visit their page on CCC or attend their meetings on Monday nights in Ruth Merrill. TOOP meetings are a welcoming space where theater enthusiasts can connect, share their experiences, and support each other. Come discover how joining TOOP can provide you with your own winning “Quidditch” team, ready to support your creative and social endeavors.
