A Behemoth Undertaking Guide: Mastering the Hunt and Unlocking Chocobos in Final Fantasy XV

Friends of a Feather, a crucial side quest in Final Fantasy 15, not only allows you to take on the A Behemoth Undertaking hunt against the formidable Deadeye, but also unlocks the highly desirable ability to rent Chocobos throughout the game world. This guide will provide you with the knowledge and strategies needed to successfully complete this quest and gain access to this essential mode of transportation across the vast plains of Eos.

Embarking on Friends of a Feather

Quest Giver: Prompto, at the beginning of Chapter 3 upon arriving at Coernix Station – Alstor (northeast Duscae).
Reward: 1500 EXP, Chocobo Whistle.

Upon initiating the “Friends of a Feather” quest at the commencement of Chapter 3, your initial destination should be the Chocobo Post, situated in eastern Duscae. Seek out Wiz, who will explain the current inaccessibility of Chocobo rentals and task you with joining the hunt for Deadeye.

Following the cutscene, engage in another conversation with Wiz and select “Talk.” This action will populate your map with nearby points of interest, a valuable asset for navigating the region. Subsequently, access the Hunts menu and select “A Behemoth Undertaking”.

While at the Chocobo Post, consider examining the wares of the local weapon vendor. It’s highly probable that they offer improved versions of your current weaponry for a reasonable price of around 300 Gil each. A particularly recommended acquisition is the Blade of Brennaere Greatsword for Gladiolus, a fire-elemental weapon that exploits the Behemoth’s vulnerability. While Noctis could also benefit from this weapon, prioritizing a safe distance during combat is generally advisable.

Tackling A Behemoth Undertaking

Recommended Level: 15
Reward: 3020 gil, Amethyst Bracelet, 2x Hunt stars

This hunt is available regardless of the time of day and you are unlikely to encounter many other enemies along the way. Consider consuming a meal for a stat boost before embarking on the hunt. From the Chocobo Post, proceed in a generally northerly direction until you encounter a path leading to an enclosed, rocky area – the location of Deadeye’s den.

Upon entering the den, you’ll face a group of Voretooth. Exploit their weakness to ice and resistance to fire to quickly eliminate them. After defeating the Voretooth, explore the dead end on the right to acquire the Crooked Helixhorn. Then, return to the main path and proceed left. At the subsequent T-junction, obtain the Behemoth Horn item from the dead end on the right before continuing left.

Crawl through the narrow passage at the end of the path for your first glimpse of Deadeye. After emerging from the passage, navigate through the foggy corridor, crawling under the tree and over the fence.

This section introduces a stealth element, requiring you to carefully track Deadeye. He will periodically move behind piles of rocks; use these as cover, moving from one to the next while holding Square / X to remain concealed.

Always remain behind Deadeye, ensuring his tail is visible. The game will provide prompts when you need to catch up, so move to the next rock when these prompts appear. After Deadeye reaches the end of the area, he will leap out, signaling that the stealth section is complete. Proceed right and squeeze through the gap in the rocks. Stock up on elemental power from the elemental rocks and prepare fire spells, as Deadeye is vulnerable to fire.

Deadeye Boss Battle Strategy

Deadeye is a large, fast, and powerful enemy, so maintaining distance is crucial. Utilize Warp Strikes and magic attacks strategically.

Deadeye is weak to fire. Focus fire magic and Warp Strikes on the oil drums scattered around the arena to trigger explosions and inflict significant damage.

When forced to take cover, warp away to create distance. When ready, warp strike back in, unleash a quick combo, and retreat again.

If you are caught in his attacks and your health depletes rapidly, retreat to the low wall on the outer corner of the arena. The Behemoth appears to ignore this location, allowing you to recover.

If your party is in critical condition, Ignis’s Regroup ability (unlocked in the Techniques section of the Ascension tree) is invaluable for bringing everyone together and rapidly restoring health.

In summary: prioritize fire damage, utilize Warp Strikes judiciously, maintain a safe distance to avoid damage, and prioritize recovery.

Upon defeating Deadeye, collect the item from the elevated plateau. At the end of the area, another crawlspace provides a shortcut back into Deadeye’s den for future use.

Return to the Chocobo Post and speak with Wiz. This completes both the hunt and the “Friends of a Feather” side quest, unlocking the ability to rent Chocobos throughout the game world, summon them with the Chocobo Whistle, and participate in Chocobo Racing. This is a rewarding outcome for your efforts.
