A Diver’s Guide to the World: Exploring Remarkable Underwater Destinations

Dive into adventure with A Diver’s Guide to the World, your passport to the most incredible underwater destinations on Earth. This guide isn’t just about scuba diving; it’s about experiencing the ocean in its entirety, connecting with the marine environment, and understanding the importance of conservation.

The question we are always asked is: What was your favorite place visited while researching for our book? Our answer is always the same: It depends on the moment. I might be longing to wander the ancient walled city of Saint-Malo, France, and watch the 42-foot tide gather force until it pounds at the 10-foot-thick city walls before retreating along a golden beach. Chris might be missing the marine action of the Galapagos.

Travel is transformative, especially dive travel. It gets under the skin, changing hearts and minds, revisiting us like an old friend when we least expect it to.

Embark on a Remarkable Journey

Our book, A Diver’s Guide to the World: Remarkable Dive Travel Destinations Above and Beneath the Surface, emerged from a profound appreciation for both travel and the vast ocean, which encompasses over 70% of our planet. The guide offers a holistic perspective, combining underwater exploration with enriching land-based experiences.

While divers eagerly anticipate their next plunge, land enthusiasts might only catch a glimpse through a snorkel. A Diver’s Guide to the World bridges this gap, catering to divers with a passion for travel, travelers intrigued by the underwater realm, and mixed groups of divers and non-divers. It’s designed for ocean travelers seeking the complete picture, offering the best of both worlds.

Divers exploring the Galapagos Islands often choose liveaboards, but land-based diving offers incredible adventures and supports local communities.

To create A Diver’s Guide to the World, we embarked on a 14-month journey, exploring 50 locations across 35 countries and logging over 250 hours underwater. We aimed to cater to both seasoned and less experienced divers. The book features well-known dive spots like Mexico and the Bahamas, alongside lesser-known gems like Easter Island and Australia’s Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

In A Diver’s Guide to the World, you’ll encounter dragons and manta rays in Komodo, ride horses along the opal-tinted shores of Zanzibar, and explore the land and sea gardens of Bormes-les-Mimosas near the Cote d’Azur. Dive with great white sharks and whale sharks in Australia, and experience the thrill of surf-and-turf safaris in South Africa.

The Importance of Ocean Exploration

The core purpose of these unique travel experiences is conservation through exploration. As Jacques Cousteau emphasized, “we must go and see for ourselves.” Direct experience fosters stronger advocacy. A Diver’s Guide to the World encourages this firsthand engagement.

During our journey, we witnessed the effects of climate change firsthand. Every location we visited has undergone significant changes in the past five years, with shifting weather patterns, migrating species, and pervasive pollution. A Diver’s Guide to the World highlights these critical issues.

However, A Diver’s Guide to the World also celebrates the individuals and organizations dedicated to making a difference. Each chapter addresses a global issue, from protecting coral reefs and mangroves to conserving sea turtles and sharks, and the importance of the high seas. It features scientists and organizations striving for positive change and provides actionable steps for readers to get involved. A Diver’s Guide to the World offers hands-on experiences, opportunities for learning, and avenues for donating time, money, or talents.

A Diver’s Guide to the World encourages scuba divers of all levels to become ambassadors for the ocean, promoting awareness and conservation efforts.
