Virginia “Gini” Newcomb, a dedicated educator and artist, passed away on December 9, 2018, at the age of 72 in Raytown, MO. Born on August 9, 1946, in Kansas City, MO, to Byron D. Newcomb and Beatrice (Billingsley-Newcomb) Brown, Gini leaves behind a legacy of creativity and a profound impact on Montessori education. She was a loving mother to Travis, Michael, and Aaron Willhoit, and a cherished grandmother to Howie, Marley, Lincoln, and Reagan.

Gini is survived by her brother, Dr. David Newcomb DC, her nieces and nephews Shannon, David Jr, James, and Joseph Newcomb, and her aunts and uncles: Dr. Edwin Newcomb DC, Joyce Post, Paul Newcomb, and Clara Frederickson. She will also be deeply missed by her fiancé, Jon Miller.

Gini Newcomb’s Educational Journey and Montessori Expertise

Gini’s passion for art and education led her to attend the Kansas City Art Institute and earn a BA in Studio Art with a Minor in Art History from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Her dedication to Montessori education was evident in her certifications from MIA (Montessori Institute of America) since 1986 and MEPI (Montessori Educational Programs International) since 1995.

Throughout her career, Gini served in various roles, including School Manager, Assistant Director, Director, and Lead Teacher. However, her true calling was in the classroom, working directly with children.

“Art for the Montessori Classroom”: A Lasting Contribution

Gini Newcomb’s most notable contribution to the Montessori community is her book, “Art for the Montessori Classroom,” a comprehensive art curriculum guide designed specifically for Montessori environments. This work provides teachers with a structured framework for introducing art to children in a way that aligns with Montessori principles, fostering creativity, and self-expression.

Roots & Wings Family Yoga: Integrating Movement and Mindfulness

Beyond her work in art education, Gini was also a certified YogaKids facilitator. She created the program “Roots & Wings Family Yoga” to integrate yoga into the classroom, providing children and parents with tools for movement, mindfulness, and relaxation. She conducted teacher workshops, sharing her expertise and helping educators incorporate yoga practices into their teaching.

A Celebration of Life

A “Celebration of Life” was held in her home on Saturday, January 12th at 2:00 to honor Gini’s memory and her contributions to the field of education and art.
