A Guide to Floral Mechanics by Sarah Diligent: Inspiring Floral Designs

My floral journey began as a child, lying in the grass, captivated by bees and butterflies visiting a butterfly tree on a warm summer day. The scent of those flowers still evokes that moment, instantly transporting me back to that childhood fascination.

For me, alpine strawberries hold immense sentimental value. They remind me of my grandfather’s garden and are adored by my mother. Their delightful fruits and sweet flowers make them wonderful additions to buttonholes and corsages. Incorporating them into personal floral arrangements always brings a smile to my face.

When thinking about the most beautiful bouquet I’ve ever seen, so many come to mind. But the one that inspired me the most was a celebration of spring flowers by The Garden Gate Flower Co in Cornwall. It showcased seemingly effortless beauty and inspired me to work with, rather than against, nature. The arrangement stayed with me and influenced my approach to floral design.

My favourite installation was the hanging floral hoops my team and I created for a dear friend’s wedding. Being a guest and sitting beneath those fragrant hoops was an absolute joy. Typically, we are gone long before the wedding breakfast and speeches. But experiencing the love in the room while sipping champagne under those flower-filled hoops is a memory I will always cherish. The mechanics used to create the hoops ensured the flowers stayed fresh and beautiful throughout the celebration.
