A Maroon’s Guide to Time and Space: Navigating Freedom Through the Multiverse

Candice D’Meza, a Houston-based writer, actor, and director, presents her latest creation: A Maroon’s Guide to Time and Space. This multidisciplinary, immersive theatre experience intricately weaves together live performance, music, video, and powerful cosmic forces to explore the prophetic visions and intense dreams of Harriet Tubman, the iconic abolitionist and conductor of the Underground Railroad.

Embark on a Time-Traveling Journey to Freedom

Guided by The Maroon Frequency, the collective consciousness of African freedom seekers across time and dimensions, A Maroon’s Guide to Time and Space invites its audience to step aboard a time-traveling vessel. Here, the boundaries of conventional science dissolve, and participants transcend linear timelines to unlock a genuine and enduring access to freedom.

As you journey through this theatrical exploration of Afrofuturism, you’ll uncover the hidden mechanisms of the multiverse, dance with DJ Harriet, be a part of a live recording of Harriet’s popular talk show, engage in chess with the genderless Nommo fish people, sign retrospective release forms, and witness Tubman’s younger self coming to terms with her pivotal role in creating freedom for oppressed people throughout the space-time continuum. For Tubman wasn’t simply dreaming of freedom; freedom was dreaming of her, has always been, and always will be.

A Maroon’s Guide to Time and Space is more than just a play; it’s a groundbreaking journey into Afrofuturism. This vibrant artistic and cultural movement seamlessly fuses elements of science fiction, fantasy, and African and African American culture.

A Crisis of Imagination: Reimagining Our World

D’Meza emphasizes, “In inviting the audience to experience themselves within this immersive sci-fi production, I’m also inviting everyone into a game of imagination with me, where together we can create new worlds for ourselves that may be more hospitable to our hopes and dreams than the one we are currently in. Now, more than ever, we are in a crisis of imagination and in need of robust options for keeping our hope for this world alive. Who better to use as an example of vision being used to build a new world than Harriet Tubman?”

D’Meza, a master of experimentation, has consistently captivated audiences in Houston. As a prominent actor on the Catastrophic stage since 2014, she expanded her creative horizons during the pandemic by writing for stage and screen. The Catastrophic Theatre promptly produced her 30 Ways to Get Free, a series of three impactful micro-films.

A Maroon’s Guide to Time and Space echoes themes explored in 30 Ways to Get Free while diverging significantly in tone, form, and content. This play, or rather, this transformative experience, is perfectly suited for The Catastrophic Theatre, and they are honored to premiere it.

Afrofuturism: A Journey Beyond Boundaries

This immersive theatrical experience is a powerful exploration of Afrofuturism, using the lens of Harriet Tubman’s legacy to explore themes of freedom, time, and space. It encourages the audience to actively participate in the narrative, blurring the lines between performance and reality. By engaging with these concepts, A Maroon’s Guide to Time and Space invites viewers to reimagine the world around them and to cultivate hope for a more equitable future, guided by the enduring spirit of Tubman and the Maroon Frequency. The play serves as a reminder that freedom is not a static concept but a continuous journey of exploration and creation.
