A Teaching Guide for Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine: Application and Residency Information

Applicants seeking consideration for residency programs are required to submit a comprehensive application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Audition rotations take place from July to December, with interviews commencing in January. Our program participates in the NRMP match.

To be eligible for an interview, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Graduation from a COCA-accredited College of Osteopathic Medicine.
  2. Graduation from a United States (US) LCME college of medicine, in addition to fulfilling all OSU-CHS/OMECO prerequisite requirements for admission into an ACGME-accredited Osteopathic Recognition residency program.
  3. Graduation from a US LCME college of medicine and a passing score on the COMLEX-USA Level 1, Level 2 CE, and Level 2 PE exams.

Applications are exclusively accepted through ERAS. Completed applications undergo periodic review, and qualified candidates are notified when sufficient information is available to extend an interview invitation.

Required application materials include:

  • Official transcript from an accredited College of Osteopathic Medicine.
  • All national board scores for exams taken to date.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • Personal Statement.

Interviews

A current National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX-USA) transcript and/or US Medical Licensing Exam must be included as part of the application.

Eligible applicants are evaluated by the Selection Committee on a rolling basis starting mid-September when the online portal opens, and are considered for interview, ranking, and appointment.

Audition Rotation

To schedule an audition rotation, please visit the Office of Clinical Education to review the following requirements:

  • Complete the visiting student application.

  • Upload the required documentation, including:

    • Proof of Completed Compliance Training (e.g., HIPAA, ACLS/BLS, TB test, Mask fitting).
    • Letter of good standing.
    • Current CV and photo.

    • Immunization verification form.
    • Background check report.
    • Certificate of malpractice liability coverage.
    • Proof of health insurance coverage.
    • 10 panel drug screen report.
    • HIPAA/BBP training certificates.
    • Letter of intent for Family Medicine.
    • Passing your COMLEX.
    • Verification that an affiliation agreement is in place with your school and OSU.

Once all items have been uploaded, your file is forwarded to the Department of General Surgery for review. You will receive an email indicating whether your request has been approved or denied.

ERAS Information

Applications are processed solely through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Once applications are complete, they are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Qualified applicants will be notified when enough information exists to warrant an interview, and interview dates will be offered accordingly.

Requirements for Non-DO Applicants: A Teaching Guide for Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Integration

Non-DO applicants are required to complete specific training to ensure a foundation in osteopathic principles and practices. Here’s what’s needed:

Prior to the Match (20 Business Days):

  1. Complete 60 hours of OSU-COM’s years one and two curriculum, including OMM I, II, III, and IV. A teaching guide for osteopathic manipulative medicine, specifically lectures and lab components, may be utilized to direct the lab portion. OMM education from outside institutions will not be accepted.

    • A certificate of completion will be provided upon successful completion of the program.

  2. Verification of completion of the CORRE examination with a minimum passing score at or above the 10th percentile.

  3. A letter of recommendation from a D.O. with an active practice is mandatory and should be included within the residency application. The letter needs to explicitly state the applicant’s understanding of osteopathic philosophy.

During Residency:

  1. Complete 60 hours of OPP Continuing Medical Education, approved by the OSU-CHS/OMECO. This can be achieved through CME courses, didactics, elective rotations, etc., emphasizing the clinical application of osteopathic principles.   2. Successfully pass an OMM basic skills competency practical examination, administered by OSU-CHS faculty, before the PGY-2 year.
  3. Demonstrate satisfactory progress through the Osteopathic Recognition Milestones during residency, showcasing competence and adherence to osteopathic principles.
