Getting Started with Fishing in WoW

If you’re new to fishing in World of Warcraft, follow these simple steps to cast your first line:

  1. Purchase a Fishing Pole from a Fishing Supply or Trade Supply vendor.
  2. Equip the Fishing Pole in your main hand slot.
  3. Open your Spellbook by pressing ‘P’.
  4. Navigate to the ‘General’ tab located in the top left corner of your spellbook. Find the Fishing spell.
  5. Drag the Fishing spell to your action bar for easy access. Binding it to a mouse button can make fishing more convenient.
  6. Position yourself next to a body of water, ensuring you have a clear line of sight into the water. Activate the Fishing spell. (Note: you cannot be swimming).
  7. Watch the bobber in the water closely. When it splashes, right-click on it to reel in your catch.
  8. If you didn’t catch anything, you may have reacted too early or too late to the splash. Timing is key!

Leveling Your Fishing Skill from 1 to 525

You can fish in almost any body of water to level your Fishing skill from 1 to 525, regardless of the zone’s level. While skill gains are possible everywhere, fishing in areas too advanced for your current skill level will likely result in catching mostly junk items.

The zones listed below are recommendations to streamline your leveling process. You could theoretically reach 525 skill even in starting zones like Orgrimmar or Stormwind City. Remember to visit a fishing trainer to learn the next rank of Fishing at skill levels 75, 150, 225, 300, 375, and 450!

Leveling Fishing: 1 – 50

Reaching skill level 50 is quick. It’s recommended to start in Orgrimmar or Stormwind City. Fish near your trainer until you reach skill level 50 and can learn the next fishing rank. At this early stage, any fishable water will suffice, as valuable catches are not the priority.

Leveling Fishing: 50 – 200

Visit your trainer and learn Journeyman Fishing.

Purchase 3 Nightcrawlers from the Fishing supply vendor near your trainer.

Travel to the Barrens. Apply Nightcrawlers as bait and fish in one of the three oases around the Crossroads to level from 50 to 200. Once you reach skill level 100, using Nightcrawlers is no longer necessary.

Don’t forget to visit a fishing trainer to learn the next rank of fishing between skill levels 125-150.

Fishing for Deviate Fish

The Barrens is recommended for this skill range because it’s the primary location to catch Deviate Fish. Deviate Fish are more valuable than other fish at this level, although selling them in large quantities can still be challenging.

Consider buying the Recipe: Savory Deviate Delight recipe from the Auction House if it’s reasonably priced. Cooking Deviate Fish into Savory Deviate Delight can increase their value, or you can sell them raw.

Consuming Savory Deviate Delight transforms you into either a Pirate or a Ninja for 60 minutes, a fun buff. Many players, including myself, prefer to cook and personally use the Savory Deviate Delight.

Alternative Fishing Zones

Alternatively, you can fish until skill level 150 in capital cities or zones like Bloodmyst Isle, Darkshore, Ghostlands, Ironforge, Loch Modan, Silverpine Forest, and Westfall.

For skill levels 150 to 250, suitable fishing zones include Alterac Mountains, Arathi Highlands, Desolace, Dustwallow Marsh, Stranglethorn Vale, Swamp of Sorrows, and Thousand Needles. Using Bright Baubles as lure until skill 225 will help reduce the amount of junk caught.

Leveling Fishing: 200 – 275

Visit your trainer and learn Artisan Fishing. Fish to reach skill level 275 in zones such as:

  • Felwood
  • Feralas (excluding Jademir Lake)
  • The Hinterlands
  • Un’Goro Crater
  • Western Plaguelands

Leveling Fishing: 275 – 350

Visit your trainer and learn Master Fishing.

Start using Bright Baubles as your lure.

Fish until skill level 350 in these recommended zones:

  • Winterspring
  • Jademir Lake in Feralas
  • Eastern Plaguelands
  • Zangarmarsh

Leveling Fishing: 350 – 525 in Cataclysm Waters

Visit a Fishing trainer to learn Grand Master Fishing.

Be prepared to catch a significant amount of junk initially when fishing in high-level Cataclysm zones, even with good gear and lures. For instance, fishing in Deepholm without catching junk effectively requires a fishing skill of 550 (with lures). If your effective skill is around 450-470, approximately one-third of your catches will be junk.

For fishing skill levels 350 to 450, consider these zones:

  • Deepholm
  • Mount Hyjal
  • Vashj’ir

Visit your trainer again between skill levels 425-450 to learn Illustrious Grand Master Fishing.

For fishing skill levels 450 to 525:

  • Twilight Highlands
  • Uldum

This guide provides a clear path to maximize your fishing skill in Cataclysm Classic, ensuring you are ready to tackle any fishing challenge!
