Welcome to the ultimate Classic WoW Alchemy leveling guide! This guide is designed to show you the fastest and most cost-effective way to increase your Alchemy skill from 1 to 300 in Classic World of Warcraft.
Alchemy pairs exceptionally well with Herbalism. By combining these two professions, you can significantly reduce the gold you spend on leveling, as you’ll be able to gather many of the necessary herbs yourself. If you’re also looking to level Herbalism, check out our Classic Herbalism leveling guide 1-300.
If you are still in the process of leveling your character, or starting a new alt, consider using Zygor’s 1-60 Leveling Guide. It’s a fantastic tool to help you reach level 60 much faster, so you can jump into professions like Alchemy.
Shopping List for Classic Alchemy Leveling
Below is a comprehensive shopping list of materials you will need to level Alchemy in Classic WoW. Keep in mind that many recipes used in this guide become yellow as you progress, meaning you won’t gain a skill point every single time you craft. To account for this, I’ve included an extra 10-20 herbs for most recipes. However, depending on your luck, you might need to gather or purchase slightly more.
Are You Playing Cataclysm Classic?
If you’re playing Cataclysm Classic, please use our Cataclysm Alchemy Leveling Guide instead. There have been changes to trainers and recipes, so the Cataclysm guide is specifically tailored for that expansion.
Finding Classic Alchemy Trainers
You can learn Classic Alchemy from any of the NPCs listed below. Click on the links to see the exact location of each trainer.
Alternatively, you can simply ask a guard in any major city for directions to the Alchemy trainer. Their location will be marked on your map with a red flag.

Alliance Alchemy Trainers:
Leveling Your Alchemy Skill in Classic WoW
Alchemy Leveling 1 – 60
To begin your Alchemy journey, you’ll start by making Minor Healing Potions.
65x Minor Healing Potion – 65 Peacebloom, 65 Sliverleaf, 65 Empty Vial
Keep all the Minor Healing Potions you craft. You will need them later in your leveling process.
Learn Journeyman Alchemy
To continue leveling Alchemy past skill level 75, you must learn Journeyman Alchemy. This requires your character to be level 10 or higher. Note that not all Alchemy trainers can teach you Journeyman Alchemy; you’ll need to find an Expert Alchemist.
You can learn Journeyman Alchemy from these NPCs:
Horde Journeyman Alchemy Trainers:
Alliance Journeyman Alchemy Trainers:
Alchemy Leveling 60 – 140
Continue your skill progression by crafting Healing Potions.
Expert Alchemy Training
To advance beyond Alchemy skill level 150, you will need to learn Expert Alchemy. This requires a character level of 20 or higher. Expert Alchemy is not taught by every trainer; you must seek out an Artisan Alchemist.
Horde players can learn Expert Alchemy from Doctor Herbert Halsey in Undercity. Alliance players can learn it from Ainethil](/npc/classic/ainethil) in Darnassus.
Recipe to Purchase
Before leaving Darnassus or Undercity after learning Expert Alchemy, make sure to buy the Recipe: Superior Mana Potion. You will need this recipe later at skill level 265. Buying it now will save you time later when you are already near the vendors who sell it.
This recipe is sold by Ulthir in Darnassus and by Algernon](/npc/classic/algernon) in Undercity. It’s important to note that this is a limited supply item. If it’s out of stock, keep checking back until it respawns, or consider purchasing it from the Auction House.
Alchemy Leveling 140 – 155
Craft Lesser Mana Potions to push through this skill range.
20x Lesser Mana Potion – 20 Mageroyal, 20 Stranglekelp, 20 Empty Vial
This recipe will turn yellow for the last 10 skill points, so you might need to make a few extra.
Alternatively, if you are short on Stranglekelp or find Firefin Snapper to be inexpensive, you can make Healing Potions if you prefer.
Alchemy Leveling 155 – 185
Switch to crafting Greater Healing Potions for the next skill range.
35x Greater Healing Potion – 35 Liferoot, 35 Kingsblood, 35 Leaded Vial
If you opted to make Fire Oil earlier, you can now use it to create Elixir of Firepower.
Alchemy Leveling 185 – 210
Elixir of Agility is the recommended recipe for this range.
30x Elixir of Agility – 30 Stranglekelp, 30 Goldthorn, 30 Leaded Vial
If you find yourself lacking Goldthorn, you can craft Mana Potions or Lesser Invisibility Potions up to around skill level 195.
If Goldthorn is completely unavailable, you can make Nature Protection Potions between skill levels 190-215.
Recipe: Nature Protection Potion is sold by these vendors. This is also a limited supply recipe, so you may need to wait for it to respawn if someone else has recently purchased it.
Artisan Alchemy Training
To progress past Alchemy skill level 225, you must learn Artisan Alchemy. This requires your character to be level 35 or higher. Artisan Alchemy is taught by Master Alchemists, not all Alchemy trainers.
Horde players can learn Artisan Alchemy from Rogvar in Swamp of Sorrows at Stonard.
Alliance players can learn it from Kylanna Windwhisper](/npc/classic/kylanna-windwhisper) in Feralas at Feathermoon Stronghold.
Alchemy Leveling 210 – 265
Alchemy Leveling 265 – 285
Superior Mana Potions are the way to go for this stage.
30x Superior Mana Potion – 60 Sungrass, 60 Blindweed, 30 Crystal Vial
Remember the Recipe: Superior Mana Potion? It is sold by Ulthir in Darnassus and Algernon](/npc/classic/algernon) in Undercity. It’s a limited supply item, so check stock or the Auction House. You might have already purchased it when you trained Expert Alchemy, so check your inventory first!
Alchemy Leveling 285 – 300
Finish your Classic Alchemy leveling by crafting Major Healing Potions.
20x Major Healing Potion – 40 Golden Sansam, 20 Mountain Silversage, 20 Crystal Vial
The recipe for Major Healing Potion is sold by Evie Whirlbrew in Winterspring at Everlook. Recipe: Major Healing Potion is a limited supply recipe, so you may need to wait if someone else bought it recently or buy it from the Auction House.
