Welcome to the ultimate guide for leveling your Engineering skill in Classic World of Warcraft! Engineering is a fantastic profession, renowned for its gadgets, bombs, and quirky inventions that can give you a real edge in both PvE and PvP. If you’re looking to craft everything from useful trinkets to powerful explosives, then Engineering is the profession for you.
For the most efficient and cost-effective leveling experience, Engineering pairs exceptionally well with Mining. If you’re still on your journey to level 60, or perhaps starting a new character, consider using a leveling guide to speed up the process. Zygor’s 1-60 Leveling Guide is a popular choice that can help you reach max level much faster, allowing you to dive into professions like Engineering sooner.

Cataclysm Classic Note
Please be aware that Cataclysm Classic introduces significant changes to trainers and recipes. If you are playing Cataclysm Classic, you should follow our dedicated Cataclysm Engineering Leveling Guide for the most accurate and effective information.
Finding Engineering Trainers in Classic WoW
To begin your Engineering training, you’ll need to find an Engineering trainer. You can learn Apprentice Engineering from trainers in most major cities once you reach level 5. Simply ask any guard in a city for directions to the Engineering trainer, and they will mark the location on your map.
For efficient leveling, especially to skill level 200, it’s recommended to start in Orgrimmar (Horde) or Ironforge (Alliance). These cities host trainers who can teach you up to Expert Engineering, minimizing travel time during your initial skill progression. Trainers in other major cities typically only teach Journeyman level recipes, requiring you to eventually travel to Orgrimmar or Ironforge anyway.

Leveling Your Classic WoW Engineering Skill: Step-by-Step
Before you start crafting, make sure you have a Blacksmith Hammer in your inventory. You can purchase this from Blacksmithing or Engineering supply vendors, usually located near your trainer, or from any general goods vendor.
Gnome Engineering Racial Bonus
If you’re playing a Gnome, you have a significant advantage! Gnomes possess the Engineering Specialization racial passive, granting +15 Engineering skill. This bonus means recipes will remain orange (guaranteed skill-up) for 15 extra skill points, allowing you to gain more skill-ups from lower-level recipes and potentially save gold.

Engineering Specializations: Gnomish vs. Goblin
At Engineering skill level 200, you have the option to specialize in either Gnomish Engineering or Goblin Engineering. Each specialization grants access to unique recipes and gadgets. Some items require a specific specialization to use, while others can be used by any Engineer regardless of specialization. Many crafted items from either specialization can be used by both Gnomish and Goblin Engineers.
