The discovery of original master tapes from the early “ABC in Concert” shows offers a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal era of rock music. Soundfarm studio possesses the original masters from the first two shows, recorded on 4-track 1/2″ 15ips Ampex 406 tape, derived from the 24-track machine present in the location truck. While the video, 24-track, and other 1/2″ masters were reportedly discarded, the audio tapes for these two shows were fortunately rescued in 1980.
The audio quality is remarkably high, characterized by clarity, a strong signal-to-noise ratio, and crisp stereo on tracks 2 and 3 (intended for FM simulcast). Track 4 features mono audio for television broadcast, while track 1 provided mag sync for video lock. The transient response is noted as excellent. The Rock Concert tapes held by Historic Films utilized a similar recording process.
The potential for a boxed set release is exciting, but the prospect of making all tracks available on platforms like iTunes is even more appealing. The tracks have already undergone processing and restoration. Notably, several songs performed by the bands at Hofstra University were recorded but never actually aired on television.
