The Ultimate Classic WoW Engineering Leveling Guide (1-300)

Are you looking to master Engineering in Classic World of Warcraft? This Engineer Guide Classic will provide you with the fastest and most efficient path to level your Engineering skill from 1 to 300. Engineering is a fantastic profession, renowned for its gadgets, bombs, and quirky devices that can give you an edge in both PvE and PvP.

For the most cost-effective leveling experience, combining Engineering with Mining is highly recommended. Gathering your own ores will significantly reduce the gold you need to spend. If you’re also leveling Mining, be sure to check out our Classic Mining Leveling Guide for a complementary guide. However, if you prefer not to mine, you can still level Engineering by purchasing all necessary materials from the Auction House.

If you’re still on your journey to level 60, consider using Zygor’s 1-60 Leveling Guide. It’s a great tool to accelerate your leveling process and get you ready for end-game content and professions like Engineering.

Finding Your Engineering Trainer in Classic WoW

To start your Engineering training, you’ll need to find an Engineering trainer in any major city. You can begin learning Classic Engineering from level 5 onwards.

Simply ask any guard in a city for directions to the Engineering trainer, and they will mark the location on your map with a red flag.

For Horde players, Orgrimmar is an excellent starting point.
For Alliance players, Ironforge is highly recommended.

These cities are ideal because they also offer Expert Engineering training, allowing you to stay in one location until you reach skill level 200. Trainers in other major cities might only teach you Journeyman recipes, eventually requiring you to travel to Orgrimmar or Ironforge anyway.

Leveling Your Classic Engineering Skill: A Step-by-Step Guide

Before you begin crafting, purchase a Blacksmith Hammer from a Blacksmithing or Engineering supply vendor. These vendors are usually located near your trainer. Alternatively, you can also purchase one from a general or trade goods vendor.

Gnome Racial Bonus for Engineering

If you’re playing a Gnome, your racial trait Engineering Specialization grants you a +15 Engineering skill bonus. This means recipes will remain orange (guaranteed skill-up) for 15 extra skill points, saving you gold by allowing you to gain more skill-ups from lower-level recipes.

Apprentice Engineering (1 – 75)

  • 1 – 30: 30 x Handful of Copper Bolts – 30 Copper Bar. You will need approximately 30 of these later on, so keep them.
  • 30 – 50: 30 x Rough Copper Bomb – 30 Copper Bar, 30 Handful of Copper Bolts, 60 Rough Blasting Powder, 30 Linen Cloth. This recipe provides a good skill-up rate in this range.

Journeyman Engineering (75 – 150)

To progress past skill level 75, you need to learn Journeyman Engineering. Not all Engineering trainers offer this skill; you need to seek out an Expert Engineer (requires character level 10).

You can learn Journeyman Engineering from these NPCs:

Horde Journeyman Trainers

Alliance Journeyman Trainers

  • 75 – 90: 60 x Coarse Blasting Powder – 60 Coarse Stone. Hold onto these as you’ll need them later.
  • 90 – 100: Explore recipes like Copper Tube or Arclight Spanner to reach 100. The best recipe might depend on material availability and prices on your server.
  • 100 – 105: 5 x Silver Contact – 5 Silver Bar. If Silver Bar is expensive on your server, you can skip this and continue with Bronze Tube.
  • 105 – 125: 25 x Bronze Tube – 50 Bronze Bar, 25 Weak Flux. Weak Flux is sold by Engineering Supply vendors near your trainer.
  • 125 – 150: Continue making Bronze Tubes or switch to Handful of Bronze Bolts if you have leftover Bronze Bars and want to use them up.

Expert Engineering (150 – 225)

To advance beyond skill level 150, you must learn Expert Engineering from an Artisan Engineer (requires character level 20).

You can find Expert Engineering trainers:

  • Roxxik in Orgrimmar

  • Springspindle Fizzlegear in Ironforge

  • 150 – 160: 15 x Bronze Framework – 30 Bronze Bar, 15 Medium Leather, 15 Wool Cloth. Keep these as they are used in later recipes. You might gain more than 10 skill points here depending on your luck with orange recipes turning yellow. Stop when they turn green.

  • 160 – 175: Craft 爆破[爆破] Powder or Heavy Blasting Powder until 175. Check Auction House prices for materials to determine the most cost-effective option.

  • 175 – 195: 60 x Solid Blasting Powder – 120 Solid Stone. Save these, you’ll need them later for higher-level crafts.

  • 195 – 225: 7 x Mithril Tube – 21 Mithril Bar. Stop crafting these once you reach 225. Hold onto at least 6 Mithril Tubes if you plan to specialize in Gnomish Engineering at skill level 200.

Artisan Engineering (225 – 300)

To surpass skill level 225, you must train Artisan Engineering. You’ll need to find a Master Engineer to teach you this skill.

Seek out Buzzek Bracketswing in Tanaris, Gadgetzan. He is located just outside the Inn, to the left of the entrance, near the mailbox. You must be level 35 or higher to learn from him.

Engineering Specializations: Gnomish vs. Goblin

At Engineering skill level 200, you can choose to specialize in either Gnomish Engineering or Goblin Engineering. Certain items require a specific specialization to use, while others are crafted by one specialization but usable by any engineer. Luckily, many crafted items from either specialization can be used by both.

For a detailed breakdown of specializations to help you decide, consult our comprehensive Guide to Engineering Specializations.

  • 225 – 245: 40 x Mithril Casing – 120 Mithril Bar. Save these, they are used in many recipes.
  • 245 – 250: Craft Unstable Trigger until 250.
  • 250 – 260: 30 x Dense Blasting Powder – 60 Dense Stone. You might need to craft more than 30 to reach 260, as skill-ups become less frequent.
  • 260 – 285: Consider crafting Thorium Widget or 飞[飞]ing Machine Control depending on material costs and availability.
  • 285 – 300: 20 x Thorium Tube – 120 Thorium Bar. Schematic: Thorium Tube is sold by Xizzer Fizzbolt in Winterspring, Everlook, in the first building on the right as you enter the town.

Congratulations on reaching Engineering skill level 300! We hope this engineer guide classic has been helpful in your journey to mastering this versatile and exciting profession in Classic WoW. Happy crafting!
