This comprehensive Engineering leveling guide for Classic WoW will provide you with the quickest and easiest path to raise your Engineering skill from 1 to 300.
For maximum efficiency and cost savings, it’s highly recommended to pair Engineering with Mining. Leveling both professions simultaneously allows you to gather the necessary ores yourself, significantly reducing the gold you’ll need to spend. If you’re also looking to level Mining, be sure to check out our Classic Mining leveling guide 1-300. Without Mining, you will need to purchase all your materials from the Auction House, which can be costly.
If you are still in the process of leveling your character or starting a new alt, consider using Zygor’s 1-60 Leveling Guide. It’s a fantastic resource to accelerate your journey to level 60.

Finding Classic WoW Engineering Trainers
You can begin your Engineering journey by learning Apprentice Engineering from trainers located in major cities. You must be at least level 5 to start learning Engineering.
To find a trainer, simply ask a guard in any city for directions to the Engineering trainer. They will mark the trainer’s location on your map with a red flag. Click on the links below for the exact locations of trainers.
For efficient leveling up to skill level 200, Orgrimmar (Horde) and Ironforge (Alliance) are recommended starting cities. These locations host trainers who can teach Expert Engineering, allowing you to stay in one place until you reach skill level 200. Trainers in other major cities typically only teach Journeyman recipes, eventually requiring you to travel to Orgrimmar or Ironforge anyway.
Horde Engineering Trainers:
Alliance Engineering Trainers:
Leveling Apprentice Engineering (1-75)
First, purchase a Blacksmith Hammer from a Blacksmithing or Engineering supply vendor, usually found near your trainer. Alternatively, any general or trade goods vendor will also sell them.
Gnome Engineering Racial Bonus
Gnome characters benefit from a +15 Engineering skill bonus thanks to their racial passive Engineering Specialization. This bonus means recipes will remain orange (guaranteed skill-up) for 15 additional skill points, allowing you to use lower-level recipes for longer and potentially save gold.
-

- Smelt Copper Ore into Copper Bars. This should get you to skill level 30.
-
30 – 50 30 x Handful of Copper Bolts – 30 Copper Bar
- You will need approximately 30 Handful of Copper Bolts later, so making them now is efficient.
-

Journeyman Engineering (75 – 150)
To progress past skill level 75, you must train Journeyman Engineering. Not all Engineering trainers offer this skill level; you need to seek out a Journeyman Engineering Trainer. (Requires character level 10)
You can learn Journeyman Engineering from these NPCs:
Horde Journeyman Engineering Trainers:
Alliance Journeyman Engineering Trainers:
-
75 – 90 60 x Coarse Blasting Powder – 60 Coarse Stone
- Keep any extra Coarse Blasting Powder you make, as you might need it later.
-
90 – 100 20 x Copper Modulator – 20 Copper Bar, 20 Handful of Copper Bolts, 40 Coarse Blasting Powder
- Copper Modulators are a decent skill-up and utilize more of your Copper Bolts and Blasting Powder.
-
100 – 105 5 x Silver Contact – 5 Silver Bar
- If Silver Bar is expensive on your server’s Auction House, you can skip these and continue with Bronze Tubes longer.

- Weak Flux is sold by Engineering Supply vendors near your trainer. Bronze Tubes are a staple for leveling.

Expert Engineering (150 – 225)
To progress past skill level 150, you need to learn Expert Engineering. Expert Engineering trainers are not available in every city; you must visit specific trainers. (Requires character level 20)
You can learn Expert Engineering from Roxxik in Orgrimmar and Springspindle Fizzlegear in Ironforge.
-
150 – 160 15 x Bronze Framework – 30 Bronze Bar, 15 Medium Leather, 15 Wool Cloth

-
160 – 175 20 x Heavy Blasting Powder – 40 Heavy Stone
- Heavy Blasting Powder provides a good skill-up range and uses readily available Heavy Stone.
-
175 – 195 60 x Solid Blasting Powder – 120 Solid Stone
- Save any extra Solid Blasting Powder, as you will need it for crafting later recipes.
-
195 – 200 7 x Mithril Tube – 21 Mithril Bar
- Stop crafting Mithril Tubes once you reach skill level 200. Keep at least 6 Mithril Tubes if you plan to specialize in Gnomish Engineering at skill level 200.
-
200 – 225 40 x Target Dummy – 40 Bronze Framework, 80 Solid Blasting Powder, 40 Wool Cloth
- Target Dummies are a great way to push into Artisan Engineering, utilizing the Bronze Frameworks and Solid Blasting Powder you’ve been making.

Artisan Engineering (225 – 300)
To advance beyond skill level 225, you must learn Artisan Engineering. Artisan Engineering trainers are even more specialized and require a trip to a specific location.
You can learn Artisan Engineering from Buzzek Bracketswing in Tanaris, Gadgetzan. He is located just outside the Inn, on the left side near the mailbox. You must be character level 35 or higher to learn from him.
Engineering Specializations at 200
At Engineering skill level 200, you gain the option to specialize in either Gnomish Engineering or Goblin Engineering. Certain crafted items require a specific specialization to use, while others are crafted by one specialization but can be used by any engineer. Importantly, most recipes crafted by a specific Specialization can be equipped by engineers of either specialization.
