The Ultimate Engineering Leveling Guide for WoW Classic (1-300)

Are you looking to master Engineering in WoW Classic? This comprehensive guide will walk you through the fastest and easiest way to level your Engineering skill from 1 to 300. Engineering is a fantastic profession in Classic WoW, offering unique gadgets, bombs, and utilities that can be incredibly helpful in both PvE and PvP.

For the most efficient leveling experience, we highly recommend pairing Engineering with Mining. By mining your own ores, you’ll significantly reduce the gold cost associated with leveling Engineering. If you’re also looking to level Mining, be sure to check out our Classic Mining Leveling Guide. However, if you prefer not to mine, you can still level Engineering by purchasing materials from the Auction House.

If you’re still on your journey to level 60, consider using a leveling guide to speed up the process. We recommend Zygor’s 1-60 Leveling Guide, which can help you reach max level much faster, allowing you to focus on professions like Engineering sooner.

Gather Your Resources: Shopping List

Before you begin your Engineering journey, it’s wise to gather the necessary materials. If you’re a miner, these farming guides will be invaluable:

Copper Ore farming
Tin Ore farming
Iron Ore farming
Mithril Ore farming
Thorium Ore farming

Cataclysm Classic Note

Please note that if you are playing Cataclysm Classic, there are significant changes to trainers and recipes. For Cataclysm Engineering leveling, please refer to our dedicated Cataclysm Engineering Leveling Guide.

Finding Engineering Trainers in Classic WoW

To start learning Engineering, you’ll need to find an Engineering trainer. You can learn Apprentice Engineering from trainers in most major cities once you reach level 5.

To easily locate a trainer, simply ask a guard in any city for directions to the Engineering trainer. They will mark the trainer’s location on your map with a red flag.

For efficient leveling, especially to skill level 200, we recommend starting in Orgrimmar (Horde) or Ironforge (Alliance). These cities have trainers who can teach you up to Expert Engineering, minimizing travel. Trainers in other cities typically only teach Journeyman recipes, requiring you to travel to Orgrimmar or Ironforge eventually anyway.

Leveling Your Engineering Skill: 1-300

First, purchase a Blacksmith Hammer. You can buy this essential tool from a Blacksmithing or Engineering supply vendor, usually located near your trainer, or from any general goods vendor.

Gnome Engineering Racial Bonus

Gnome characters benefit from a +15 Engineering skill bonus due to their racial passive Engineering Specialization. This bonus means recipes will remain orange (guaranteed skill-up) for 15 additional skill points, potentially saving you gold by allowing you to use lower-level recipes for longer.

Apprentice Engineering (1-75)

  • 1 – 30: 30 x Handful of Copper Bolts – 30 Copper Bar. You’ll need approximately 30 of these later, so crafting a bit extra isn’t a bad idea.
  • 30 – 75: 60 x Rough Copper Bomb – 60 Copper Bar, 60 Handful of Copper Bolts, 120 Rough Blasting Powder, 60 Linen Cloth. Rough Copper Bombs are a good way to push through this skill range and are somewhat useful early on.

Journeyman Engineering (75 – 150)

To progress past skill level 75, you must learn Journeyman Engineering. Not all trainers offer this level of training; you need to seek out an Expert Engineer. (Requires character level 10)

Journeyman Engineering Trainers:

Horde Journeyman Trainers

Alliance Journeyman Trainers

  • 75 – 90: 60 x Coarse Blasting Powder – 60 Coarse Stone. Keep these Coarse Blasting Powders, as you will use them later.
  • 90 – 100: 20 x Copper Modulator – 20 Copper Bar, 20 Wool Cloth
  • 100 – 105: 5 x Silver Contact – 5 Silver Bar. If Silver Bar is expensive on your server, consider making more Bronze Tubes instead to reach skill level 105.
  • 105 – 150: 75 x Bronze Tube – 150 Bronze Bar, 75 Weak Flux. Weak Flux is sold by Engineering Supply vendors near your trainer. Bronze Tubes are used in many recipes and are a solid choice for leveling.

Expert Engineering (150 – 225)

To advance beyond skill level 150, you need to learn Expert Engineering from an Artisan Engineer. (Requires character level 20)

Expert Engineering trainers are Roxxik in Orgrimmar and Springspindle Fizzlegear in Ironforge.

  • 150 – 160: 15 x Bronze Framework – 30 Bronze Bar, 15 Medium Leather, 15 Wool Cloth. It’s wise to keep these Bronze Frameworks, as they are used in later recipes. You might gain more than 10 skill points crafting these. Stop when they turn yellow and only craft more as needed.
  • 160 – 175: 20 x Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor – 20 Bronze Bar, 20 Iron Bar.
  • 175 – 195: 60 x Solid Blasting Powder – 120 Solid Stone. Save these Solid Blasting Powders; you will need them for later recipes.
  • 195 – 200: 7 x Mithril Tube – 21 Mithril Bar. Stop crafting Mithril Tubes once you reach skill level 200. Keep around 6 Mithril Tubes if you plan to specialize in Gnomish Engineering at skill level 200, as they are required for some Gnomish recipes.
  • 200 – 210: 15 x Large Copper Bomb – 15 Copper Bar, 30 Solid Blasting Powder, 15 Bronze Framework

Artisan Engineering (225 – 300)

To continue past skill level 225, you must learn Artisan Engineering. You will need to find a Master Engineer trainer. (Requires character level 35)

Artisan Engineering is taught by Buzzek Bracketswing in Gadgetzan, Tanaris. He is located just outside the inn, on the left side near the mailbox. Ensure you are level 35 or higher to learn from him.

Engineering Specializations at 200

At Engineering skill level 200, you gain the option to specialize in either Gnomish Engineering or Goblin Engineering. Certain items require a specific specialization to use, while others are crafted by one specialization but usable by any engineer. Fortunately, many crafted items are usable by both specializations.

For detailed information on choosing a specialization, refer to our dedicated guide:

Guide to Engineering Specializations

  • 210 – 225: 25 x Iron Strut – 75 Iron Bar
  • 225 – 235: 20 x Explosive Sheep – 20 Wool Cloth, 40 Solid Blasting Powder, 20 Iron Strut
  • 235 – 250: 30 x Mithril Casing – 90 Mithril Bar. Save these Mithril Casings, as they are needed for many useful Engineering recipes.
  • 250 – 260: 30 x Dense Blasting Powder – 60 Dense Stone. You might need to craft slightly more than 30 to reach skill level 260.
  • 260 – 285: 50 x Unstable Trigger – 50 Thorium Bar, 50 Runecloth
  • 285 – 300: 20 x Thorium Tube – 120 Thorium Bar. Schematic: Thorium Tube is sold by Xizzer Fizzbolt in Everlook, Winterspring, in the first building on the right.

Congratulations on reaching Engineering skill level 300 in Classic WoW! We hope this guide has been helpful in your journey to becoming a master engineer. Now you can enjoy crafting all the amazing gadgets and devices Engineering offers!
