Classic WoW Engineering Leveling Guide: Fast & Easy 1-300

This comprehensive Classic WoW Engineering Leveling Guide will walk you through the quickest and simplest methods to raise your Engineering skill from 1 to 300.

For maximum efficiency and cost savings, it’s highly recommended to pair Engineering with Mining. Leveling both professions simultaneously allows you to gather the necessary ores yourself, significantly reducing the gold you’ll spend. If you’re also leveling Mining, be sure to check out our Classic Mining Leveling Guide 1-300. However, if you choose not to pursue Mining, you will need to purchase all required materials from the Auction House.

If you’re still in the process of leveling your character or starting a new alt, consider using Zygor’s 1-60 Leveling Guide. It’s a fantastic resource to accelerate your journey to level 60.

Essential Materials Shopping List

If you have Mining and prefer to farm the ores yourself, these guides will help:

Copper Ore Farming: Essential resource for early Engineering levels.

Tin Ore Farming: Necessary for progressing through Journeyman Engineering.

Iron Ore Farming: Crucial for leveling Expert Engineering efficiently.

Mithril Ore Farming: Key component for Artisan Engineering and beyond.

Thorium Ore Farming: Required for the final push to 300 Engineering skill.

Cataclysm Classic Note

Please be aware that Cataclysm Classic features significant changes to trainers and recipes. If you are playing Cataclysm Classic, please refer to our dedicated Cataclysm Engineering Leveling Guide for accurate and up-to-date information.

Finding Engineering Trainers

You can begin your Engineering journey by learning Apprentice Engineering from any of the NPCs listed below. Note that you must reach level 5 before you can learn any profession.

To locate a trainer, simply click on any of the provided links to see their exact location on the map. Alternatively, you can ask any city guard for directions to the Engineering trainer; their location will be marked with a red flag on your map.

For Horde players, Orgrimmar is a highly recommended starting location. Alliance players will find Ironforge equally convenient. These cities not only offer Apprentice Engineering training but also Expert Engineering, allowing you to stay in one location until you reach skill level 200. Trainers in other major cities typically only teach Journeyman recipes, eventually requiring you to travel to Orgrimmar or Ironforge anyway for further progression.

Leveling Your Classic Engineering Skill

First, purchase a Blacksmith Hammer. You can find this tool at Blacksmith or Engineering supply vendors, usually situated near your trainer. General or trade goods vendors may also carry it.

Gnome Racial Bonus for Engineering

Gnome characters benefit from a +15 Engineering skill bonus due to their passive racial trait, Engineering Specialization. This bonus means recipes will remain orange (guaranteeing skill-ups) for 15 additional skill points, potentially saving you a considerable amount of gold by allowing you to gain more skill points from lower-level recipes.

Apprentice Engineering (1 – 75)

  • 1 – 30: 30 x Handful of Copper Bolts – 30 Copper Bar. You will need approximately 30 of these later, so crafting a few extra is beneficial.

  • 30 – 50: 30 x Rough Copper Bomb – 30 Copper Bar, 30 Handful of Copper Bolts, 60 Rough Blasting Powder, 30 Linen Cloth.

  • 50 – 75: Continue crafting Rough Copper Bombs or consider crafting Arclight Spanner if you prefer to save Copper Bars and have Linen Cloth available. Arclight Spanner – 60 Linen Cloth, 60 Copper Bar. Keep the Arclight Spanners as you might need them later.

Journeyman Engineering (75 – 150)

To progress past skill level 75, you must learn Journeyman Engineering. Not all Engineering trainers offer this level of training; you need to seek out a Journeyman Engineering Trainer (often labeled as “Expert Engineer” in-game). This requires your character to be level 10 or higher.

You can learn Journeyman Engineering from the following NPCs:

Horde Journeyman Trainers

Alliance Journeyman Trainers:

  • 75 – 90: 60 x Coarse Blasting Powder – 60 Coarse Stone. Hold onto these as you will need them shortly.

  • 90 – 100: 40 x Copper Modulator – 80 Copper Bar, 40 Weak Flux.

  • 100 – 105: 5 x Silver Contact – 5 Silver Bar. If Silver Bar is prohibitively expensive on your server, you can skip these and continue with Bronze Tubes.

  • 105 – 125: 25 x Bronze Tube – 50 Bronze Bar, 25 Weak Flux. Weak Flux is readily available from Engineering Supply vendors near your trainer.

  • 125 – 135: 20 x Standard Scope – 20 Bronze Tube, 20 Medium Leather. Keep these scopes; they can be useful for hunters or sold on the Auction House.

  • 135 – 150: 20 x Heavy Blasting Powder – 40 Heavy Stone.

Expert Engineering (150 – 225)

To progress past Engineering skill level 150, you must train Expert Engineering. Similar to Journeyman, not all trainers offer this level. You need to locate an Expert Engineering trainer (often called “Artisan Engineer”). This requires your character to be level 20 or higher.

Expert Engineering can be learned from Roxxik in Orgrimmar and Springspindle Fizzlegear in Ironforge.

  • 150 – 160: 15 x Bronze Framework – 30 Bronze Bar, 15 Medium Leather, 15 Wool Cloth. Crafting these now may carry you further towards 160. Stop crafting once recipes turn yellow and only make more if you specifically need them for other crafts.

  • 160 – 175: 20 x Green Firework – 20 Bronze Framework, 20 Heavy Blasting Powder.

  • 175 – 195: 60 x Solid Blasting Powder – 120 Solid Stone. Save these, as they will be needed later.

  • 195 – 200: 7 x Mithril Tube – 21 Mithril Bar. Stop crafting Mithril Tubes once you reach skill level 200. Keep at least 6 Mithril Tubes if you plan to choose Gnomish Engineering at skill level 200.

  • 200 – 225: 40 x Unstable Trigger – 40 Mithril Bar, 40 Solid Blasting Powder, 40 Wool Cloth.

Artisan Engineering (225 – 300)

To continue past skill level 225, you must learn Artisan Engineering. Finding an Artisan Engineering trainer (often referred to as “Master Engineer”) is necessary.

You can learn Artisan Engineering from Buzzek Bracketswing in Tanaris, Gadgetzan. He is conveniently located just outside the Inn, on the left side near the mailbox. You must be level 35 or higher to learn from him.

Engineering Specializations

Upon reaching Engineering skill level 200, you have the option to specialize in either Gnomish Engineering or Goblin Engineering. Certain crafted items require a specific specialization to use, while others are crafted by one specialization but can be used by any engineer. Fortunately, most recipes crafted by a specific Specialization can be equipped by engineers of either specialization.

For detailed information on choosing the right specialization for you, please see our dedicated guide:

Guide to Engineering Specializations

  • 225 – 235: 20 x Mithril Gyro – 20 Mithril Bar.

  • 235 – 245: 20 x Hi-Impact Mithril Slugs – 20 Mithril Bar, 20 Solid Blasting Powder. These are useful for Hunters.

  • 245 – 250: 7 x Mithril Spring – 21 Mithril Bar.

  • 250 – 260: 30 x Dense Blasting Powder – 60 Dense Stone. You may need to craft slightly more than 30 to reach skill level 260 consistently.

  • 260 – 285: 35 x Thorium Widget – 70 Thorium Bar, 35 Runecloth.

  • 285 – 300: 20 x Thorium Tube – 120 Thorium Bar. Schematic: Thorium Tube is sold by Xizzer Fizzbolt in Winterspring at Everlook, located in the first building on the right.
