Leveling WotLK Engineering

To start, purchase a Blacksmith Hammer from a Blacksmithing Supply vendor, usually located near your Engineering trainer, or any general goods vendor.

Gnome Engineering Skill Racial Bonus

Gnome characters benefit from a +15 Engineering skill bonus due to their Engineering Specialization racial passive. This advantage means Engineering recipes remain orange for 15 additional skill points, allowing you to gain more skill-ups from lower-level recipes and potentially save gold.

1 – 75: Apprentice Engineering

Visit any Engineering trainer in capital cities to learn Apprentice Engineering.

  • 30 – 50: 30x Handful of Copper Bolts – 30 Copper Bars. You will need approximately 30 of these later, so it’s wise to craft them now.

  • 51 – 75: 30x Rough Copper Bomb – 30 Copper Bars, 30 Handful of Copper Bolts, 60 Rough Blasting Powder, 30 Linen Cloth.

Journeyman Engineering

Return to your trainer and learn Journeyman Engineering. This requires character level 10.

75 – 135: Journeyman Engineering

  • 90 – 100: 20x Coarse Dynamite – 60 Coarse Blasting Powder, 20 Linen Cloth.

  • 105 – 125: 25x Bronze Tube – 50 Bronze Bars, 25 Weak Flux. Weak Flux is available from Engineering Supply vendors near trainers.

Expert Engineering

Visit your trainer again to learn Expert Engineering. Requires character level 20.

135 – 200: Expert Engineering

  • 150 – 160: 15x Bronze Framework – 30 Bronze Bars, 15 Medium Leather, 15 Wool Cloth. Keep these as they are used in later recipes. Crafting these now might take you closer to skill level 160. Stop crafting them once you reach your desired skill level, and only make more when needed.

  • 175 – 176: 1x Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor – 4 Steel Bars. Keep this item as it’s required for some Engineering recipes.

  • 195 – 200: 7x Mithril Tube – 21 Mithril Bars. Stop crafting these at skill level 200. Save 6 Mithril Tubes in case you choose Gnomish Engineering specialization at 200.

Artisan Engineering

Learn Artisan Engineering from your trainer. Requires character level 35.

At skill level 200, Engineering allows you to specialize in either Gnomish Engineering or Goblin Engineering. Some items are specialization-specific, while others crafted by one specialization can be used by any engineer. Most crafted recipes are usable by both specializations, regardless of which specialization crafted them.

For a detailed guide on choosing a specialization, refer to this guide:

Engineering Specializations in WotLK Classic

200 – 300: Artisan Engineering

  • 215 – 238: 40x Mithril Casing – 120 Mithril Bars. Keep these casings, as they are used later.

  • 250 – 260: 30x Dense Blasting Powder – 60 Dense Stone. Keep at least 15 of these, as they are needed at skill level 285. You might need to craft more than 30 to reach level 260.

  • 285 – 300: 15x Thorium Shells – 30 Thorium Bars, 15 Dense Blasting Powder.

Master Engineering

Learn Master Engineering from the trainers listed below. Requires character level 50.

Alliance:

Trainer Name Location
Tinker Jonn Ironforge, The Great Forge
Lebowski Stormwind City, Trade District

Horde:

Trainer Name Location
Roxxik Orgrimmar, Valley of Spirits
Engineer Palehoof Thunder Bluff

300 – 320: Master Engineering

  • 300 – 320: 20x Elemental Blasting Powder – 40x Fel Iron Bar. Craft these now as you will need them later for skill points. Each craft yields 4 powders, resulting in 80 Elemental Blasting Powder total. You might need to craft a few Fel Iron Bomb in the next step if you don’t reach skill level 320.

320 – 325: Master Engineering

  • 320 – 325: 10x Fel Iron Bomb – 10x Fel Iron Casing, 20x Handful of Fel Iron Bolts, 10x Elemental Blasting Powder. You may need to craft more of these if you experience unlucky skill point gains.

325 – 335: Master Engineering

  • 325 – 335: 10x Adamantite Grenade – 40x Adamantite Bar, 20x Handful of Fel Iron Bolts, 10x Elemental Blasting Powder.

335 – 350: Master Engineering

  • 335 – 350: 60x White Smoke Flare – 60x Elemental Blasting Powder, 60x Netherweave Cloth. This recipe will likely turn green for a portion of this range, so the quantity is approximate.

The Schematic: White Smoke Flare recipe is sold by these vendors:

It’s a limited supply item, so if it’s sold out, wait for the respawn (around 7-10 minutes) or check other vendors.

WotLK Classic Engineering (Grand Master Engineering)

Learn Grand Master Engineering from the NPCs listed below. Requires character level 65.

Horde:

Trainer Name Location
Roxxik Orgrimmar, Valley of Spirits
Engineer Palehoof Thunder Bluff
Fizzie Sparkspinner Warsong Hold, Borean Tundra

Alliance:

Trainer Name Location
Tinker Jonn Ironforge, The Great Forge
Lebowski Stormwind City, Trade District
Jedidiah Handers Valiance Keep, Borean Tundra

Both factions can also learn from Timofey Oshenko in Dalaran.

350 – 375: Grand Master Engineering

  • 350 – 375: Craft approximately 50x Handful of Cobalt Bolts and 24x Handful of Cobalt Bolts before crafting Volatile Blasting Trigger.** Volatile Blasting Triggers stay yellow longer, making them more beneficial to craft later for skill-ups. Note that crafting Handful of Cobalt Bolts can yield 1 or 3 bolts, and Volatile Blasting Trigger yields 2 per craft. Save both of these crafted items.

375 – 435: Grand Master Engineering

  • 385 – 390: 7x Explosive Decoy – 7 Frostweave Cloth, 21 Volatile Blasting Trigger. You might need to craft a few more to reach the next skill level.

  • 400 – 405: 5x Diamond-cut Refractor Scope – 5 Froststeel Tube, 10 Handful of Cobalt Bolts.

  • 410 – 415: 5x Goblin Beam Welder – 30 Saronite Bars, 15 Crystallized Fire, 15 Crystallized Water.

  • 425 – 430: 7x Mechanized Snow Goggles – 56 Saronite Bars, 14 Borean Leather, 7 Eternal Shadow. If you are a Goblin Engineer, consider crafting Global Thermal Sapper Charge between skill levels 425-430. If you plan to craft the portable mailbox MOLL-E, craft it at skill level 429 as it offers a guaranteed skill point. Mechanized Snow Goggles might become green soon and have a lower chance of skill-ups at 429.

435 – 450: Grand Master Engineering

  • 435 – 450: 30x Gnomish Army Knife – 300 Saronite Bars, 30 Skinning Knives, 30 Mining Picks, 30 Blacksmith Hammers. This recipe will turn green for the last 5 skill points, so you might need to craft more than 30. However, it’s generally cheaper than other options, even if you need to craft multiple for a single skill point.

You can purchase Mining Picks and Blacksmith Hammers from Bryan Landers near your trainer. Skinning Knives are sold by Ranid Glowergold.

Epic Engineering Goggles and Wormhole Generator

For those aiming for 450 Engineering rather than stopping at 440, crafting the Wormhole Generator: Northrend and your desired epic Engineering Helm at skill level 448 is highly recommended.

Gnomish Army Knife turns green at 445, requiring potentially 10-20 crafts per skill point for the last few levels. In contrast, the Goggles and Wormhole Generator: Northrend remain orange until 450, potentially saving you gold. If you don’t need the goggles, craft the Wormhole Generator: Northrend at 449.

Congratulations on reaching Engineering skill level 450! Please send feedback regarding this guide if you have suggestions for improvements, spot typos, errors, or incorrect material quantities.
