Quick Navigation:

Pallet Town: Shades of your journey await!

Welcome to Pallet Town, your humble starting point in the expansive Kanto region. This serene hometown, with its iconic red-roofed houses and the renowned Professor Oak’s Laboratory, sets the stage for your grand Pokémon adventure. It’s a place where dreams of becoming a Pokémon Master begin, and every trainer takes their first, tentative steps into a world brimming with wonder and challenges.

Before you rush out the door, interact with the PC in your room. Navigate to ‘Item Storage’ and retrieve the Potion – a small but essential starting item for any budding trainer. Head downstairs, where your mom will offer words of encouragement, symbolizing the bittersweet moment of leaving home to pursue your dreams.

Stepping outside, you might encounter a local pondering the marvels of modern technology, specifically the START menu. A quick chat highlights the simple joys and discoveries that await in the world of Pokémon. Next door, your rival’s sister waits, offering a hint that her brother is at Professor Oak’s lab, impatience probably bubbling over.

Venture to Oak’s Lab at the south of town. Your rival will greet you with news that the Professor is absent. As you approach the town’s northern exit, ready to seek him out, Professor Oak appears as if by magic, cautioning you about venturing into the tall grass without a Pokémon. He escorts you back to his lab, setting the scene for a pivotal moment in your journey.

Inside the lab, the adventure truly begins. Professor Oak presents you with the momentous choice: a Bulbasaur, a Squirtle, or a Charmander. Each of these first partner Pokémon is a gateway to unique battling styles and strategies. Choose wisely, considering the journey ahead and your preferred type advantages.

Professor Oak presenting the first Pokémon choices, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle, in Fire Red and Leaf Green.

After selecting your Pokémon and perhaps resetting a few times to achieve the perfect nature and gender for the dedicated trainer, step back into the world. Your rival, fueled by competitive spirit, will immediately challenge you to your first Pokémon battle. Professor Oak provides a brief tutorial on battling basics, but the real learning begins now.

Battle – Rival

  • Pokémon: Bulbasaur/Charmander/Squirtle Lv. 5

Your rival will always choose the Pokémon with a type advantage over yours, creating an immediate challenge. If you picked Bulbasaur, he’ll choose Charmander; Charmander faces Squirtle; and Squirtle battles Bulbasaur. Despite this type disadvantage, victory is within your reach. At this early stage, neither Pokémon knows a type-specific attack, making it a battle of basic moves and strategic Potions. Triumph earns you 80 Pokédollars, and Professor Oak’s congratulations – your first milestone achieved. With your first Pokémon and victory under your belt, Route 1 awaits.

Route 1: Pallet Town – Viridian City

  • Pokémon Found: Rattata, Pidgey

Route 1, the path north from Pallet Town to Viridian City, is a beginner-friendly introduction to the wild Pokémon of Kanto. The upbeat music sets a cheerful tone, though the abundance of tall grass hints at the wild encounters to come.

This route is straightforward and short. Head into the first patch of tall grass, veering left to engage with any wild Pokémon. A kind gentleman in an apron stands ready to gift you a Potion, a welcome addition to your inventory. Turn right, navigate the rectangular patch of grass, then turn left again, heading through the gap in the ledge. Finally, turn right once more, proceed upwards through two more grass patches, and curve slightly left to reach the road leading into Viridian City.

Viridian City: The Eternally Green Paradise

Viridian City welcomes you with lush greenery, from bushes lining the pathways to the green roofs adorning the houses. However, your path deeper into the city is initially blocked by an old man seemingly asleep in the middle of the road, humorously claiming he needs his coffee before moving. The city’s music offers a more complex and evolved sound compared to the original games, yet retains its nostalgic charm.

Upon entering Viridian City, the first stop should be the Pokémon Center to heal your Pokémon after any Route 1 battles. After a brief, and unsuccessful attempt to rouse the old man, step into the Poké Mart. Here, the shopkeeper recognizes you instantly and entrusts you with Oak’s Parcel, requesting its delivery back to Professor Oak in Pallet Town. Unfortunately, due to this important task, the Poké Mart will not sell you anything just yet, necessitating a return trip south.

Route 1: Pallet Town – Viridian City (take two)

  • Pokémon Found: Rattata, Pidgey

This return trip to Pallet Town is conveniently quicker. Take advantage of the ledges you passed earlier to jump down, bypassing much of the tall grass and any potential wild Pokémon encounters. Retrace your steps through the familiar grassy patches back to your hometown. A swift detour indeed!

Pallet Town: Shades of your journey await! (take two)

If your Pokémon sustained any damage during your brief foray into Route 1, a quick visit to your mom will have them fully healed. Otherwise, proceed directly to Oak’s Lab. Speak with Professor Oak, and he’ll commend your quick errand run and recognize your budding talent as a trainer. You automatically hand over Oak’s Parcel, just as your rival bursts into the lab, adding his usual competitive flair to the scene.

It turns out Professor Oak had planned to bestow both of you with Pokédexes all along. He presents you both with these high-tech encyclopedias and, in a generous upgrade from the original games, grants you five Poké Balls. He then elaborates on his aging aspirations to document all Pokémon in the world. Your rival, ever the antagonist, declares his independence and boasts about obtaining a Town Map from his sister, implying you won’t be so lucky. However, reverse psychology is at play here.

Professor Oak handing over the Pokédex to the player in Fire Red and Leaf Green.

Visiting your rival’s house to the east confirms your suspicion. His sister, in contrast to his expectations, readily gifts you a Town Map, a crucial tool for navigating the expansive Kanto region. Now, equipped with Poké Balls and a map, it’s time to return to Route 1, this time prepared to catch wild Pokémon.

Route 1: Pallet Town – Viridian City (take three)

  • Pokémon Found: Rattata, Pidgey

By now, Route 1 is familiar territory. The significant difference this time is the ability to catch wild Pokémon you encounter. Rattata and Pidgey are common here, offering excellent early-game training opportunities and Pokédex entries. Proceed through the route, engaging with wild Pokémon to build your team and gain experience for your starter.

Viridian City: The Eternally Green Paradise (take two)

Upon re-entering Viridian City, heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center. It’s also wise to stock up on more Poké Balls at the Poké Mart, preparing for the Pokémon encounters ahead. This time, the old man who was blocking the path is awake and alert, having finally had his coffee. He now serves as a helpful tutorial, demonstrating how to catch a Weedle. As a bonus, he gifts you the Teachy TV, a useful item containing beginner lessons about Pokémon basics. The Teachy TV is hosted by the amusing “Poké Dude,” offering lessons that are both informative for newcomers and humorously nostalgic for experienced players.

To find a hidden item, head west, and take the first upward path available. Follow this narrow path to discover what appears to be a Poké Ball on the ground. In a playful deception, it turns out to be a Potion disguised as a Poké Ball. Return to the main path, continuing west towards the city’s exit and Route 22.

Route 22: Viridian City – Indigo Plateau

  • Pokémon Found: Rattata, Mankey, Spearow

Route 22 branches west from Viridian City. While not essential to the main storyline progression initially, it’s a worthwhile detour. The route’s music, especially the remixed version in Fire Red and Leaf Green, is particularly engaging. Route 22 leads to a location of interest and offers unique Pokémon encounters.

It’s recommended to catch a Mankey in the first patch of grass here. Mankey, a Fighting-type Pokémon, can be a valuable addition to your team early in the game. After some training on Route 22, proceed upwards, taking the higher path (the lower path currently leads nowhere). Save your game before advancing west, as a trainer battle awaits. Prepare yourself and head west to encounter your rival once again.

Battle – Rival

  • Pokémon: Pidgey Lv. 9, Bulbasaur/Charmander/Squirtle Lv. 9

This battle against your rival is notably tougher than your first encounter. His Pidgey’s Sand-Attack can reduce your Pokémon’s accuracy, making the battle more challenging. It’s advisable to train your Pokémon slightly before this battle, perhaps focusing on leveling up Mankey if you caught one. Reserve your strongest Pokémon for after Pidgey is defeated to avoid accuracy reduction. Victory here allows you to proceed further west on Route 22, but for now, turn back east to Viridian City.

Viridian City: The Eternally Green Paradise (take three)

Return to Viridian City to heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center after the battle with your rival. Now, head north, towards the path previously blocked by the old man. If you wish, you can briefly explore the Viridian City Gym to the east, but it’s currently locked, and you cannot challenge the Gym Leader yet. Continue north, exiting Viridian City and entering Route 2.

Route 2: Viridian City – Pewter City

  • Pokémon Found: Rattata, Pidgey, Caterpie, Weedle

Route 2 shares the same cheerful music as Route 1. It’s a short route with a single patch of tall grass and several Cuttable trees that are currently inaccessible without the Cut Hidden Machine (HM).

Simply proceed north along the path. At the end of this short route, you’ll reach a large building – a gatehouse. Pass through this gatehouse to enter the next significant location on your journey: Viridian Forest.

Viridian Forest: A Natural Maze

  • Pokémon Found: Weedle, Caterpie, Kakuna, Metapod, Pikachu

Viridian Forest is a stark contrast to the open routes. It’s characterized by its dense trees, dim lighting filtering through the canopy, and mysterious, somewhat eerie music. This location truly lives up to its name as a maze, with winding paths and numerous turns that can easily lead to disorientation. The first-person perspective views offered in Fire Red and Leaf Green are particularly striking here, enhancing the forest’s immersive atmosphere.

Upon entering Viridian Forest, proceed north and interact with the left side of the large tree directly in front of the Youngster trainer. You’ll discover a hidden Antidote. Take the path to the west and then turn north. You’ll find an item lying on the ground, similar to the Potion in Viridian City. Return to the forest entrance, either by backtracking south or heading east – both paths will lead you back to the starting point. From the entrance, take the path to the east. Collect the item in the grass patch to the far east, then proceed north. Choose either the east or west path based on whether you wish to engage with more wild Pokémon; both paths converge again shortly. Continue onwards after they rejoin, and turn east. Head north there, turn west, battle the trainer, and continue walking. Go south, disregard the path eastward, continue further south, then west, then north, then west again, and battle another trainer. Head south, then east, collect the item, then west, then north, and battle yet another trainer. Press the ‘A’ button on the grass tile adjacent to the trees directly opposite the trainer to find a Potion he supposedly dropped but denies ownership of. Continue northwards to emerge from Viridian Forest and reach another gatehouse.

Route 2: Viridian City – Pewter City (part two)

  • Pokémon Found: Rattata, Pidgey, Caterpie, Weedle

This is the second part of Route 2, separated from the first part by Viridian Forest. It features the same music and Pokémon as the initial section of Route 2.

This segment of Route 2 is extremely short. Turn slightly east, and walk directly north. This brief path quickly leads to your next city destination: Pewter City.

Pewter City: A Stone Gray City

Pewter City presents a different ambiance compared to Viridian City. While sharing similar music, Pewter’s mood is more subdued and grounded, characterized by white buildings with gray roofs and numerous trees scattered throughout. The city features a museum, a seemingly out-of-place garden, and, most importantly, the Pewter City Gym, home to Brock, the Rock-type Pokémon Gym Leader and your first major challenge.

Upon arriving in Pewter City, the first priority is to heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center. If you’re interested in Pokémon history, the Pewter Museum of Science is worth a visit. For a small entrance fee of 50 Pokédollars, you can view fossil displays, including Kabutops and Aerodactyl exhibits. However, before museum visits, the focus should be on training your Pokémon in preparation for the Gym battle against Brock.

When you’re ready to challenge the Pewter Gym, head north past the Pokémon Center, turn west, then south, and finally back east. This path leads you to the Pewter Gym. It’s time to test your skills against Rock-type Pokémon.

Battle – Camper Liam

  • Pokémon: Geodude Lv. 10, Sandshrew Lv. 11

Before facing Brock, you’ll encounter Camper Liam within the Gym. Remember Mankey? Liam’s Geodude is extremely vulnerable to Fighting-type moves like Low Kick. For Sandshrew, any Pokémon except Pikachu (due to type disadvantage) should suffice. If you manage to defeat Liam without any of your Pokémon fainting, you’re likely ready to challenge Brock. However, always ensure your Pokémon are fully healed before taking on the Gym Leader. After defeating Liam, heal your Pokémon and save your game in front of Brock, preparing for your first Gym battle.

Battle – Leader Brock

  • Pokémon: Geodude Lv. 12, Onix Lv. 14

Brock, the Pewter City Gym Leader, presents your first significant challenge. If you chose Squirtle or Bulbasaur as your starter, their Water and Grass-type moves will make this battle considerably easier due to type advantages. However, if you chose Charmander, or prefer a more strategic approach, you’ll need a different strategy.

For trainers seeking a non-type-advantage approach, consider using Growl to lower Geodude’s Attack stat while it uses Defense Curl. This strategy minimizes the damage you take, allowing you to chip away at Geodude’s health. Your first Pokémon may not secure the victory (level 9 Spearow in this example), but switching to Mankey and utilizing Low Kick is highly effective.

When Onix enters the battle, keep Mankey in play. In Fire Red and Leaf Green, Low Kick’s power is amplified against heavier opponents, and Onix, being a massive Rock Snake Pokémon, is exceptionally heavy. Low Kick should defeat Onix in just two hits. Congratulations, you’ve earned the Boulder Badge, your first Gym Badge!

Brock also rewards you with TM39 Rock Tomb. While the original walkthrough author tentatively taught it to Mankey, consider its usefulness for your team’s overall strategy. After the battle, heal your Pokémon and exit Pewter City to the east. Professor Oak’s Aide will stop you just outside the Gym, delivering Running Shoes from your mom, who is cheering you on from Pallet Town. Now you can run by holding down the ‘B’ button, significantly speeding up your travel across Kanto.

Route 3: Mt. Moon Ahead

  • Pokémon Found: Pidgey, Spearow, Mankey, Jigglypuff, Nidoran♂, Nidoran♀

Route 3 is densely packed with trainers, making it an excellent location for experience point grinding. Be sure to engage in battle with every trainer you encounter. Pay particular attention to the Youngster trainer positioned just south of the Bug Catcher who mentions meeting you in Viridian Forest. This is the iconic “Shorts are comfy!” guy, a memorable quote for Pokémon fans, although the translation has been slightly altered in Fire Red and Leaf Green.

After navigating through the cluster of trainers, you’ll encounter a Lass who comically asks “Eek! Did you touch me?” regardless of your player character’s gender. Beyond her, there’s a patch of tall grass which you can bypass if desired. Continue east until you reach another grass patch and a Youngster. The grass patch is a dead end, and the Youngster is not a trainer, so turn north.

Route 4: Pewter City – Cerulean City

  • Pokémon Found: No grass in this part

The first section of Route 4 is characterized by sandy, bumpy, and rocky terrain. Notably, it features a Pokémon Center near the entrance to Mt. Moon, your first cave exploration.

A detailed walkthrough is hardly necessary for this part of Route 4. Simply proceed directly north until you reach the Pokémon Center. Heal your Pokémon here. Inside the Pokémon Center, you’ll find a Magikarp salesman. He offers to sell you a Magikarp for 500 Pokédollars. While seemingly weak, Magikarp evolves into the powerful Gyarados, making it a worthwhile investment for some trainers. After your Pokémon are healed and perhaps a Magikarp purchased, enter the tunnel entrance to Mt. Moon, located just north of the Pokémon Center.

Mount Moon: Home of the Meteorites

  • Pokémon Found: Geodude, Zubat, Paras, Clefairy

Mt. Moon’s music is distinctively “lonely,” fitting the cave’s space-themed lore. The cave is extensive, filled with wild Pokémon encounters, trainers, Team Rocket Grunts, items, and fossils.

Upon entering Mt. Moon, head north then west initially. In the southwest corner, you’ll find TM09 Bullet Seed. Continuing north and slightly west from there, you can also pick up a Parlyz Heal. Battle the Bug Catcher trainer just to the east (who has a Weedle and a Kakuna at level 11). Head east and battle the Lass trainer who has a Clefairy. Be cautious, as Clefairy knows Encore. Navigate through the numerous wild Pokémon encounters, turn north, then east, then south (avoiding the stairs for now), and battle the Super Nerd trainer. Collect the Potion slightly to his west. Head east, pick up the Rare Candy, then go north and slightly west to battle another Bug Catcher trainer. Retrace your steps south and east, then proceed directly north to find an Escape Rope. Continue north, head west, battle the Lass trainer who is pacing in circles, and now take the staircase just to the south. Proceed through this tunnel to the other staircase and battle your first Team Rocket Grunt!

After defeating the Rocket Grunt, head east, then north, and collect the Star Piece. Return west and ascend the stairs, pass through the tunnel, and emerge back in the previous area. Now that you’ve thoroughly explored this section, head east, past the Lass trainer pacing in circles, then south, and descend the stairs. Head west through the short tunnel, down the next set of stairs, battle the Rocket Grunt, and press ‘A’ on the rock just to the east to find an Ether. Go north and collect TM46 Thief, then return through the tunnel.

Head slightly south, then west, and battle the Youngster trainer. Go further west, then north, and battle the Hiker trainer. Remember, Fighting-type moves like Low Kick are effective against Rock-type Pokémon such as Onix, which Hikers often use. Continue north and collect the Moon Stone in the northwest corner of the room. Then, descend the stairs. Follow the tunnel and descend the stairs at the end. From there, go directly north to find a Revive. Return south, then turn east. Go south and east again to battle the Rocket Grunt there. Head east, then north, then east and south. Take a few steps west, then further south, then west, then north, and battle another Rocket Grunt. Go north, then east into the small dead end and press ‘A’ on the rock to find another Moon Stone. Return west out of the dead end and attempt to pass the Super Nerd trainer. He will stop you, claiming the fossils are his and initiating a battle. After defeating him, you get to choose one fossil for yourself.

The player choosing between the Dome Fossil and Helix Fossil in Mt. Moon.

Choose your fossil: the Helix Fossil for Omanyte or the Dome Fossil for Kabuto. Head west and descend the stairs. Collect the Antidote and ascend the stairs. Pass through the small tunnel, ascend the stairs, and finally, you’ll emerge into daylight, exiting Mt. Moon!

Route 4: Mt. Moon – Cerulean City (part 2)

  • Pokémon Found: Rattata, Spearow, Mankey, Ekans (FireRed only), Sandshrew (LeafGreen only)

The second part of Route 4 is characterized by bumpy, grassy terrain. It’s relatively straightforward, with the main points of interest being the two Move Tutors located here.

Head east from the Mt. Moon exit and north towards the two karate practitioners. These aren’t trainers, so your Pokémon can rest easy. The karate expert on the west teaches Mega Punch, while the one on the east teaches Mega Kick. While both are convinced their move is superior, their usefulness is debatable in the long run. You can learn one if you wish. Jump down the ledge and head east. When you reach the trees, head north, take a few steps west and north again to collect TM05 Roar. Then head east and jump down onto the road leading to Cerulean City. You are now effectively locked onto this path until you obtain Fly later in the game, preventing immediate return to Mt. Moon. However, a patch of tall grass is accessible if you head south from this point and then west, containing the Route 4 wild Pokémon. If you don’t wish to train further, proceed directly into Cerulean City.

Cerulean City: A Mysterious, Blue Aura Surrounds It

Cerulean City, known for its blue-themed aesthetic, may not appeal to everyone. Its music can be divisive, and the city is home to Misty, a Water-type Gym Leader, a type some trainers find less engaging. Despite personal preferences, Cerulean City is crucial for plot progression.

Upon arrival, heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center. Explore the city: the Bike Shop offers a comically overpriced “BIKE 1,000,000” option, a girl’s Electrode has been replaced with a Slowbro, the Jynx-for-Poliwhirl trade man makes a return, and Officer Jenny is stationed outside a robbed house. Of course, there’s Misty’s Gym, a Berry Crush enthusiast, and the infamous Nugget Bridge. Ensure your Pokémon are healed, as heading to Nugget Bridge initiates a trainer gauntlet.

Battle – Rival

  • Pokémon: Pidgeotto Lv. 17, Abra Lv. 16, Bulbasaur/Charmander/Squirtle Lv. 18, Rattata Lv. 15

This rival battle is significantly more challenging, especially due to Pidgeotto, which can be surprisingly resilient. Even paralyzed, it can pose a threat to your team. Victory rewards you with a Fame Checker and more comical dialogue from your rival, emphasizing his self-centered attitude. Heal your Pokémon again and proceed north towards Nugget Bridge.

Route 24: Nugget Bridge

  • Pokémon Found: Abra, Oddish (FireRed only), Bellsprout (LeafGreen only), Caterpie, Kakuna, Pidgey, Weedle, Metapod

Route 24’s music is the same upbeat theme from the game’s intro. Despite its route number, Route 24 isn’t directly part of the main storyline progression. Nugget Bridge itself has been visually enhanced in Fire Red and Leaf Green, now appearing more like a proper bridge. Nugget Bridge is a series of trainer battles leading to a Team Rocket encounter and a reward.

Proceed across Nugget Bridge, battling the trainers. Here’s a breakdown of each trainer battle:

Battle – Bug Catcher Cale

  • Pokémon: Caterpie Lv. 10, Weedle Lv. 10, Metapod Lv. 10, Kakuna Lv. 10

Bug Catcher Cale presents a comical challenge, using unevolved Bug-type Pokémon. He could have evolved Butterfree and Beedrill by now, but Bug Catchers are traditionally easy opponents.

Battle – Lass Ali

  • Pokémon: Pidgey Lv. 12, Oddish Lv. 12, Bellsprout Lv. 12

Lass Ali is another straightforward battle. Use type advantages to quickly defeat her Pokémon.

Battle – Youngster Timmy

  • Pokémon: Sandshrew Lv. 14, Ekans Lv. 14

Youngster Timmy offers a slightly tougher challenge than the previous trainers, but still easily manageable with type advantages.

Battle – Lass Reli

  • Pokémon: Nidoran♂ Lv. 16, Nidoran♀ Lv. 16

Lass Reli is a bit more competent, but still not overly difficult. She presents a decent mid-bridge challenge.

Battle – Camper Ethan

  • Pokémon: Mankey Lv. 18

Camper Ethan, with his Mankey, can be more challenging and might even cause a Pokémon or two to faint. However, with a balanced team, he shouldn’t pose a major problem.

After defeating Camper Ethan, heal your Pokémon if needed, and then speak to the trainer in front of the gatehouse to claim your reward – a Nugget. This Nugget can be sold at a Poké Mart for 5000 Pokédollars. The trainer then casually asks you to join Team Rocket, with little concern about being reported to the authorities. Regardless of your silent “no,” he continues to try to recruit you multiple times. He then challenges you to a battle.

Battle – Team Rocket Grunt

  • Pokémon: Ekans Lv. 15, Zubat Lv. 15

Despite his affiliation with Team Rocket, this Grunt is relatively weak. Zubat’s Supersonic can be annoying, but otherwise, he’s easily defeated. He continues his recruitment attempts briefly, but you can now proceed past Nugget Bridge.

Head west after Nugget Bridge and battle the trainer hiding in the tall grass. As a tip, if you intend to catch an Abra on Route 24 or 25, simply throw a Poké Ball immediately without weakening it. Abra are notoriously difficult to catch otherwise due to their tendency to teleport away.

Next, head north to collect TM45 Attract, located on the ground. Then head south and east towards Route 25.

Route 25: To Sea Cottage

  • Pokémon Found: Abra, Oddish (FireRed only), Bellsprout (LeafGreen only), Caterpie, Kakuna, Pidgey, Weedle, Metapod

The wild Pokémon found in Route 25’s tall grass are identical to those on Route 24, just at slightly different levels. In essence, Route 25 is an extension of Route 24, with minor variations.

Head east and battle the trainers. The bushes along the path are easily navigated. When you reach a point where a trainer is positioned near a Cuttable bush blocking access to an item, ensure you approach the trainer from below so that he moves far enough north, allowing you to reach the item after the battle. The item is TM43 Secret Power. Continue east until you reach Sea Cottage, the residence of Bill the Pokémaniac. Enter the cottage.

The cottage appears empty except for a Clefairy on the floor. Interact with the Clefairy; it reveals itself to be Bill, transformed as a result of an experiment gone awry. He requests your assistance in reverting to his human form. Agree to help, as this is necessary for plot progression.

Bill enters a peculiar machine, a supposed Teleporter. Approach the computer and interact with it to run the Cell Separator program. After a sequence of flashing lights and visual effects, Bill emerges from the other end of the Teleporter, restored to his human form. Speak with him, and as a token of gratitude, he gives you an S.S. Ticket, which is essential for accessing the S.S. Anne in Vermilion City later.

Exit Sea Cottage and head directly south. Take the lower path heading west to return to Cerulean City. You will pass through Route 24 again on your way back, but no further actions are required there at this time.

Cerulean City: A Mysterious, Blue Aura Surrounds It (take two)

It’s time to challenge Misty, the Cerulean City Gym Leader! Heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center and enter the Gym located on the east side of the city.

Her two junior trainers are easily defeated. One uses a level 16 Horsea, and the other a level 19 Goldeen (whose Horn Attack can be surprisingly strong, and it also knows Supersonic, so be cautious). However, Misty herself is a more formidable opponent.

Battle – Gym Leader Misty

  • Pokémon: Staryu Lv. 18, Starmie Lv. 21

Misty claims her strategy is “all-out offense with Water Pokémon,” but she also utilizes X Defends and Super Potions, and her Starmie knows Recover. This makes the battle more strategic than purely offensive. Surprisingly, Butterfree’s Poison Powder can be effective against her team. Misty’s AI seems to underestimate the damage-over-time effect of poison. If you have a Pokémon that can inflict poison, it can be a valuable asset in this battle.

After defeating Misty, exit the Gym and heal your Pokémon again. You’ll notice that the girl and her Slowbro are no longer blocking the path, and Officer Jenny has left the vicinity of the robbed house. Enter the house that was previously under police watch.

The interior is in disarray, with furniture overturned and footprints (non-human) leading out through a hole in the wall. Go through the hole and speak to the suspicious-looking character. He feigns innocence as the “suspicious guy” music starts playing, comically betraying his guilt. He is then forced to battle you.

Battle – Team Rocket Grunt

  • Pokémon: Machop Lv. 17, Drowzee Lv. 17

This Rocket Grunt is not too difficult. A level 17 Pidgey can handle him easily. Be mindful of Drowzee’s Hypnosis, though, as sleep can be detrimental.

Upon defeat, he drops TM28 Dig, which he stole from the house, and “blasts off.” If you speak to the owner of the robbed house, he doesn’t want the TM back, so you get to keep it.

Take the path south from the house’s backyard. To the east, there’s a Cuttable bush, but you can’t access it yet without the Cut HM. Continue south and then west.

You can jump down the ledge into the tall grass if you wish to catch more Pokémon, or simply take either the west or east road south to Route 5.

Route 5: Cerulean City – Saffron City

  • Pokémon Found: Pidgey, Meowth, Oddish (FireRed only), Bellsprout (LeafGreen only)

If you choose the bumpy path through Route 5, you have a chance to catch a Meowth in the tall grass. Meowth possesses the Pickup ability, which means it can find items after battles, even if it doesn’t participate in the battle itself. This can be quite useful, even if you don’t intend to use Meowth in your team directly. Further south, after navigating the tall grass, you’ll find the Pokémon Day Care. However, it can only accommodate one Pokémon at this stage, so Pokémon breeding is not yet available.

The direct road to Saffron City is blocked by a thirsty guard. Enter the house to the east; it’s the entrance to the Underground Path leading to Vermilion City. Inside, a little girl offers to trade you a version-exclusive Nidoran. In FireRed, she trades a Nidoran♀ for a Nidoran♂, and in LeafGreen, she trades a Nidoran♂ for a Nidoran♀.

Proceed down the stairs, traverse the Underground Path tunnel, and emerge on the other side. Exit the building, and you’ll find yourself on Route 6.

Route 6: Saffron City – Vermilion City

  • Pokémon Found: Pidgey, Meowth, Oddish (FireRed only), Bellsprout (LeafGreen only)

Route 6 shares the same wild Pokémon as Route 5. Head west and battle the Bug Catcher trainer (who predictably uses unevolved Weedle and Caterpie). Go south and follow the road, battling the two trainers positioned along the path. Continue east and south to battle a Bug Catcher who, surprisingly, has a Butterfree at level 20! Be cautious, as this is a more challenging opponent than typical Bug Catchers. Proceed west and south, battle the next two trainers, and you’ll arrive in Vermilion City.

Vermilion City: The Port of Exquisite Sunsets

Vermilion City, a bustling port town, welcomes you with its “Port of Exquisite Sunsets” ambiance. First things first, heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center. Speak to the woman standing near the counter inside; she’ll give you the VS Seeker. This item allows you to initiate rematches with previously battled trainers, providing excellent opportunities for experience grinding.

Head to the house west of the Pokémon Center. This is the home of the Fishing Guru. Talk to him, and if you express your interest in fishing, he’ll give you an Old Rod. Next, head east past the Pokémon Center, then south and west. You’ll see a house with a sign beside it – the Pokémon Fan Club.

Enter the Pokémon Fan Club and speak to the Chairman, seated on the left side of the top sofa. He’ll ask if you’re interested in hearing about his Pokémon. Prepare for a lengthy boastful monologue and answer “yes.” After his extended bragging session, he’ll reward you with a Bike Voucher, redeemable for a free bicycle at the Bike Shop in Cerulean City.

In the house east of the Pokémon Fan Club, a kid offers to trade a Farfetch’d for a Spearow. After exploring these points of interest, head east out of Vermilion City to Route 11.

Route 11: Vermilion City – Lavender Town

  • Pokémon Found: Ekans (FireRed only), Sandshrew (LeafGreen only), Spearow, Drowzee

Route 11 is densely populated with trainers, making it ideal for leveling up your Pokémon. The “Gamblers” from the original Red and Blue versions have been renamed “Gamers” (likely due to censorship concerns), but the “Engineers” remain the same. Ensure you battle every trainer on this route for maximum experience gain. Press ‘A’ on the tree in the northeast corner to find an Escape Rope, and an Awakening is located in the northwest corner of the route. An X Defend is also visible somewhere in the middle of the route. Below the guardhouse, you can find a narrow, less obvious path leading to a Great Ball.

After battling all the trainers, proceed to the guardhouse to the east. Two guards are inside, one mentioning the Name Rater and the other suggesting Rock Tunnel as the path to Lavender Town. Upstairs, you’ll find a trainer who offers a version-exclusive Pokémon trade: Nidorina for Nidorino in FireRed, or Nidorino for Nidorina in LeafGreen. Professor Oak’s Aide is also upstairs; he’ll give you an Itemfinder if you’ve registered 30 Pokémon in your Pokédex. Binoculars offering praise for Rock Tunnel are also present. Continuing east through the guardhouse leads to a Snorlax blocking the path, so don’t bother going that way yet. Return west to Vermilion City.

Vermilion City: The Port of Exquisite Sunsets (take two)

Heal your Pokémon in Vermilion City and head to the harbor at the far east end of the city. Using the S.S. Ticket Bill gave you, you can now board the S.S. Anne.

S.S. Anne: The Luxury Ship

The S.S. Anne is a large, multi-level ship teeming with trainers and items. Upon boarding, head west and explore each cabin on the north side, from west to east. Battle the trainers in each cabin and collect any items you find. The cabin directly south of the entrance on the east side contains a woman who will heal your Pokémon, a valuable resource on the ship. Descend the stairs located in this area. The trash can directly south of the stairs on the lower level contains a Hyper Potion. Battle all trainers in the cabins on this level as well. Return up the stairs and back to the upper deck.

Head west again and turn south towards the galley (kitchen). In the southwest corner of the galley, you’ll find a Great Ball. The trash cans on the east side contain Berries. Exit the galley and ascend the stairs to the north. Battle all trainers on this floor, but do not ascend the stairs on the east side yet. Once you’ve cleared this floor, return west and ascend the stairs in the southwest corner. Proceed west through the corridor to reach the outer deck. Battle all trainers on the deck as well.

After clearing the trainers and collecting items, heal your Pokémon again using the woman in the cabin (if needed). To reach her, exit the deck, traverse the corridor, descend a staircase, ascend another, descend another, and head east to the second-to-last cabin on that side. Return west, ascend the stairs, head south, then east, save your game, and approach the stairs leading further up to encounter your rival.

Battle – Rival

  • Pokémon: Pidgeotto Lv. 19, Raticate Lv. 16, Kadabra Lv. 18, Ivysaur/Wartortle/Charmeleon Lv. 20

This rival encounter is surprisingly manageable. While his Pokémon have gained a few levels, your team should have progressed significantly more.

Continue north, and interact with the Captain at the north end of the ship. You magically cure his seasickness by rubbing his back, and as a reward, he gives you HM01 Cut. Do not inspect his trash can.

Head south, exit the ship, and immediately after disembarking, the S.S. Anne will set sail, departing from Vermilion harbor.

Vermilion City: The Port of Exquisite Sunsets (take three)

Heal your Pokémon (again!) in Vermilion City. Teach Cut to a suitable Pokémon in your party. Head south to the Vermilion Gym, which is now accessible as the small tree blocking the entrance can be cut down. Interact with the tree, and your Pokémon will use Cut to clear the path. Enter the Gym and battle the junior trainers; they should not pose much of a challenge at this point. Now, it’s time for the infamous trash can puzzle.

This Gym puzzle involves finding two switches hidden under trash cans to unlock the door to Lieutenant Surge. Start in the northwest corner of the trash can area and interact with the trash can there. If it says “only trash,” move one trash can east and interact with that one. Continue systematically checking each trash can. Choose a direction (west, east, north, or south) and when you finally find a switch, indicating “a secret switch under the trash,” proceed in your chosen direction and check that adjacent trash can. (Even if you just checked it, the second switch can magically appear under any trash can). If luck is on your side, that’s the correct direction, and the door to Lieutenant Surge will open. Otherwise, repeat the process, maintaining your chosen direction unless it becomes impossible for a particular trash can. This method streamlines the often frustrating trial-and-error of this puzzle.

Once the door is unlocked, proceed to the Gym Leader’s room (heal your Pokémon if you haven’t already). Save your game before challenging Lieutenant Surge, and then interact with him to initiate the battle.

Battle – Leader Lt. Surge

  • Pokémon: Voltorb Lv. 21, Pikachu Lv. 18, Raichu Lv. 24

Lieutenant Surge, the Vermilion Gym Leader, specializes in Electric-type Pokémon. He shouldn’t be overly difficult, though his Raichu is powerful. If you face challenges, consider venturing into Diglett’s Cave on Route 11 and catching a Diglett or Dugtrio, Ground-type Pokémon are immune to Electric-type attacks and can be very effective here.

After defeating Surge, heal your Pokémon. Speaking of Diglett’s Cave, Professor Oak’s Aide should be standing just east of the entrance to Vermilion City. He mentions that another Aide is waiting for you on Route 2. The route to Route 2? Diglett’s Cave.

Diglett’s Cave: Vermilion City – Viridian City

  • Pokémon Found: Diglett, Dugtrio

Diglett’s Cave is a long tunnel connecting Route 11 near Vermilion City directly back to Route 2 near Viridian City. The cave features Viridian Forest’s music. Despite being dug by Diglett, the tunnel is surprisingly wide.

This is the exclusive location to catch Diglett and its evolution, Dugtrio. No other Pokémon are found here. Diglett and Dugtrio are encountered at relatively high levels, so be prepared. You might even encounter a level 31 Dugtrio.

Navigation through Diglett’s Cave is straightforward; simply follow the single path through the tunnel. Upon exiting the cave on the Route 2 side, head south to find a house. Inside, a kid holding a GBA offers to trade an Abra for a Mr. Mime.

Continue south from the house and use Cut to clear the tree blocking the path. Proceed south and enter the gatehouse. Professor Oak’s other Aide is inside and will give you HM05 Flash if you have registered at least ten Pokémon in your Pokédex. Given your progress, it’s highly likely you meet this requirement. Flash, while not very accurate in battle, is essential for illuminating dark caves like Rock Tunnel. Butterfree, due to its Compoundeyes ability, can make Flash slightly more accurate. Pikachu and Meowth can also learn Flash.

Continue south, collect the Parlyz Heal, use Cut on one of the trees, and proceed south to Viridian City. Head south in Viridian City, then west past the Pokémon Center and the pond. Use Cut on the tree to the west, and you’ll find a Move Tutor inside who will teach one of your Pokémon Dream Eater. Butterfree can learn this move as well. Afterward, return north, use Cut on another tree to get back to Diglett’s Cave, and traverse back through it. This detour through Diglett’s Cave also covers Route 2 and Viridian City (again!).

Vermilion City: The Port of Exquisite Sunsets (take four)

Return to Vermilion City Pokémon Center and heal your Pokémon. Head east out of Vermilion City via Route 6, then through the Underground Path to Cerulean City. Take the immediate path east of Cerulean City to reach Route 9.

Route 9: Cerulean City – Rock Tunnel

  • Pokémon Found: Spearow, Rattata, Ekans (FireRed only), Sandshrew (LeafGreen only)

Use Cut on the tree blocking your path and head east. Battle the Picnicker trainer. Jump down the ledge and collect TM40 Aerial Ace. Battle the Hiker trainer. Head east and north, and battle the Camper trainer. Go north and west, battle the Bug Catcher trainer (who uses two Beedrill). Continue west; tall grass is present here. This area also serves as your only practical route back to Cerulean City to heal Pokémon, so it’s wise to clear Route 9’s trainers first to avoid having to re-battle them later with weakened Pokémon.

After clearing the trainers, return east past the Camper, take the lower path heading east, and battle the Hiker. Collect the Burn Heal. Return west and take the upper path this time, heading north when you reach a small gap. Battle the Bug Catcher. Continue west and battle the Camper. Another patch of tall grass is here. Head east to the Bug Catcher again, and turn north to battle the Hiker. Go east and jump down the ledge. Battle the Picnicker, and continue east to Route 10.

Route 10: Rock Tunnel Ahead

  • Pokémon Found: Ekans (FireRed only), Sandshrew (LeafGreen only), Spearow, Voltorb

Proceed east, catching a Voltorb in the grass if desired, and head south towards the Pokémon Center. Heal your Pokémon and speak to the scientist sitting at the table. He is Professor Oak’s Aide again. If you have registered 20 Pokémon in your Pokédex, he’ll give you an Everstone. The Everstone prevents Pokémon from evolving when held. While seemingly useless, it has niche uses in breeding in later games like Emerald to pass down Natures.

Exit the Pokémon Center and head south. Go west and battle the Picnicker, then head north into the cave entrance to Rock Tunnel.

Rock Tunnel: Detour to Lavender Town

  • Pokémon Found: Onix, Mankey, Zubat, Machop, Geodude

Immediately upon entering Rock Tunnel, use Flash to illuminate the cave. While technically possible to navigate without Flash, it’s highly recommended. Head directly east. You’ll find an item to collect. It’s a Repel. Return west and take the south path where the Pokémaniac trainer is located.

Continue south and east, then north when you reach a wall. Descend the staircase there. Head south from there and west. Battle the Pokémaniac. Continue all the way west and collect the Revive. Return east and turn north to battle the Picnicker. Turn east past her, go north when you reach the wall, battle the Pokémaniac, turn east, go north when you reach the wall again, and battle both the Hiker directly north and the one slightly to the west. Then, go to the northwest corner of that room and ascend the stairs there.

Head south and battle the Hiker to the east. Go south from there and battle the Hiker to the southwest. Head directly east after that and collect the Escape Rope. Then go north, battle the next Hiker, and descend the stairs. Head west, ignore the path north and go south. Go west and battle the Picnicker. If you proceed south and west, you’ll find a little boy who is a Move Tutor and will teach your Pokémon Rock Slide.

If you don’t want Rock Slide yet, just head north. Take the east path when you see a Hiker; there’s a Max Ether there. Then go south again and battle the Hiker. Go west and north, battle the Pokémaniac. Ascend the stairs, head south and battle the Picnickers, then turn west. Go north and collect the Pearl. It’s primarily for selling. Return south and proceed further west. Battle that Picnicker. Continue west, and then go south when you see a sign sticking out of the ground. You can now exit the cave!

Route 10: Rock Tunnel – Lavender Town (part 2)

  • Pokémon Found: No grass in this part

If your Pokémon are still capable of battling, defeat the Picnicker and Hiker to the west. Jump down the ledge and battle the Hiker there, then defeat the Pokémaniac to the east. If you return east and north, you might spot a small shadow in the grass – it’s a Nanab Berry. Regardless, proceed south, south, south, and you’ll arrive in Lavender Town.

Lavender Town: The Noble Purple Town

Lavender Town is a somber and unique location. While not entirely in the light purple shade from Pokémon Yellow anymore, it retains its melancholic atmosphere and depressing music. In the original Yellow, Lavender Town had a significant emotional impact, making it a place some players preferred to avoid.

As always, heal your Pokémon upon arrival. In the Pokémon Center, you’ll hear about Team Rocket’s tragic role in Cubone’s mother’s death. Cubone itself is found in the house in the southwest corner of town. Mr. Fuji resides in the house just south and east of the Pokémon Center. Lavender Town’s main attraction is the haunted Pokémon Tower.

In the house just north of the southern exit of Lavender Town lives a Name Rater. He’ll assess your Pokémon’s nicknames. His opinions are subjective, and he always suggests he can improve a nickname unless the Pokémon was traded, in which case he praises any name. He doesn’t actually rename your Pokémon; you do. Even if you rename a Pokémon to its original name, he’ll claim it’s “vastly superior.” His services are mostly for flavor.

At the Poké Mart south of Pokémon Tower, you can purchase Great Balls for the first time in the game. Stock up, especially if you tend to forget to buy Poké Balls. Head west to Route 8.

Route 8: Lavender Town – Celadon City

  • Pokémon Found: Meowth, Pidgey, Growlithe (FireRed only), Vulpix (LeafGreen only), Ekans (FireRed only), Sandshrew (LeafGreen only)

On Route 8, battle the Lass trainer facing away from you to the west. Then battle the Gamer facing south just west of her. Head north from there and battle the Super Nerd. Go west and encounter your first 2-on-2 battle in Fire Red and Leaf Green, against Twins.

After defeating the Twins, continue west and battle the four trainers clustered together. Proceed south and battle the Biker, then west and battle the other Biker. Go north and battle that Super Nerd, and battle the Gamer to the east. Then enter the Underground Path and traverse it.

Route 7: Why They Made This Into a Separate Route is Beyond Me

  • Pokémon Found: Meowth, Pidgey, Growlithe (FireRed only), Vulpix (LeafGreen only), Oddish (FireRed only), Bellsprout (LeafGreen only)

Route 7 is short and seemingly redundant, existing primarily to provide a patch of tall grass just outside Celadon City. Navigate through the gaps in the ledges and head west into Celadon City.

Celadon City: The City of Rainbow Dreams

Celadon City is a major urban hub and a significant location in Kanto. Home to the massive Celadon Department Store, the Kanto Game Corner, the Softboiled Move Tutor, Celadon Mansion, Eevee, and Erika’s Gym, it’s the largest city in Kanto in terms of points of interest.

As usual, start by healing your Pokémon. In the Pokémon Center, an old man mentions the Poké Flute’s ability to awaken Pokémon, even though you’ll be able to hear it clearly yourself later. Exit the Pokémon Center. Take the narrow path east of the Pokémon Center until you reach a gap in the trees. Go north there and then west. Proceed through the back entrance to Celadon Mansion. Ascend all staircases and enter the peculiar room at the top of the building. The Poké Ball on the small table contains Eevee, which you can obtain.

Return outside and head further west. An Ether is located there. Return to the main city area. Enter Celadon Mansion from the main entrance. Speak to the woman inside, and she’ll give you Tea to deliver to the Saffron City guards. You can visit the Game Freak staff on the third floor if you wish, but there’s nothing else of significance there.

Enter the Celadon Department Store, the large building to the west. Here’s a quick overview of what’s available on each floor:

Head west to Route 16.

Route 16: Celadon City – Cycling Road

  • Pokémon Found: Doduo, Spearow, Rattata, Raticate

A Snorlax blocks the direct path to Cycling Road, but that’s not your immediate goal. Use Cut on the tree and proceed north. Battle the Young Couple trainer duo. Pass through the gatehouse. Enter the building to the west and speak to the woman inside. She’s a celebrity hiding from the public eye with her Fearow. She bribes you with HM02 Fly to keep her location secret. Teach Fly to a suitable Pokémon in your party. This allows you to instantly fly to any Pokémon Center you’ve previously visited.

However, don’t fly just yet. Return to Celadon City.

Celadon City: The City of Rainbow Dreams (take two)

Return to the Pokémon Center, heal your Pokémon, head south and west, and enter the first house on the west side of the city, with a door facing south. Speak to the man in the northwest corner, and he’ll give you a Coin Case. Exit and enter the house just east of that one. A Team Rocket Grunt inside will tell you not to touch the poster in the Game Corner, claiming there’s no secret switch behind it. He’s lying.

Head all the way east, and turn north. Press ‘A’ while facing the tile in the northeast corner of that passage to find a PP Up. Return south, and just south of the Rocket Grunt patrolling, you’ll find a Cuttable tree. Use Cut to clear it.

Proceed through that passage, and enter Erika’s Gym, which, according to the old man outside, is “full of women.”

Battle – Lass Kay

  • Pokémon: Bellsprout Lv. 23, Weepinbell Lv. 23

Lass Kay is positioned facing east in the center of the Gym. Be cautious of Sleep Powder.

Battle – Beauty Bridget

  • Pokémon: Oddish Lv. 21 (x2), Bellsprout Lv. 21 (x2)

Beauty Bridget is facing west in the center of the Gym. Again, be wary of powder moves, unless you’re using a Pokémon with the Guts ability.

Battle – Beauty Tamia

  • Pokémon: Bellsprout Lv. 24 (x2)

Beauty Tamia is positioned to the west, facing south.

Battle – Picnicker Tina

  • Pokémon: Bulbasaur Lv. 24, Ivysaur Lv. 24

Picnicker Tina is to the east, facing south. Her Ivysaur knows Razor Leaf, so be prepared for Grass-type attacks.

Now, use Cut on one of the trees to proceed further into the Gym. Erika is nearby.

Battle – Cooltrainer Mary

  • Pokémon: Bellsprout Lv. 22, Oddish Lv. 22, Weepinbell Lv. 22, Gloom Lv. 22, Ivysaur Lv. 22

Cooltrainer Mary is positioned south, facing west. Her Ivysaur also knows Razor Leaf, and the powder moves from previous trainers can make this battle more challenging.

Battle – Beauty Lori

  • Pokémon: Exeggcute Lv. 24

Beauty Lori is west of Erika, and her Exeggcute is particularly annoying. It uses Sleep Powder, Leech Seed, and Reflect, making it difficult to defeat quickly.

Battle – Lass Lisa

  • Pokémon: Oddish Lv. 23, Gloom Lv. 23

Lass Lisa is less challenging than Lori’s Exeggcute. By this point, you should be familiar with battling Oddish and Bellsprout evolutions. Use your established strategies.

Now, prepare to face the Gym Leader, Erika.

Battle – Leader Erika

  • Pokémon: Victreebel Lv. 29, Tangela Lv. 24, Vileplume Lv. 29

Erika’s Tangela uses Ingrain, which can be slightly annoying. Her Pokémon favor Giga Drain, so be mindful of their potential to recover HP even when low on health.

Upon defeating her, Erika will give you TM19 Giga Drain. Now, it’s time to confront Team Rocket at the Game Corner. Heal your Pokémon first!

Enter the Game Corner, located south of the Pokémon Center. Speak to the people playing the slot machines; some will give you coins. Then speak to the Rocket Grunt staring intently at the poster.

Battle – Team Rocket Grunt

  • Pokémon: Raticate Lv. 20, Zubat Lv. 20

This Rocket Grunt is easily defeated. You likely won’t even need to heal afterward.

Interact with the poster and press the switch behind it. Descend the staircase that appears.

Team Rocket’s Hideout: Game Corner Basement

Team Rocket’s Hideout features a fittingly villainous and chaotic music theme.

Head south and battle the Rocket Grunt to the west. Go all the way west and south into that room. Collect the Escape Rope from the table. Return north and head all the way east. Battle the Rocket Grunt guarding the south doorway, but you can’t proceed through the south door yet. Return north and descend the other staircase to the north.

Battle the Rocket Grunt in the room you’ve entered. Descend the stairs there and battle the Rocket Grunt below. Go south into the room he was guarding; at the south end, you’ll see half of an item ball. This is TM21 Frustration. Return north and head west. Go south when possible. Take the lower path and step on the arrow panel pointing south. Step one tile north and head east to collect the Rare Candy. Return from the dead end and step on the arrow panel north of that one, pointing north.

Next, head north and out of the arrow panel area. Re-enter the area where two arrow panels point in opposite directions with one tile between them. Step on the west one pointing west. Go south and step on the arrow panel pointing east. Take two steps west, then south. Avoid stepping on the arrow panel, go west and south. Below a small wall, there are two arrow panels; take the upper one. Battle the Rocket Grunt there and go south. Head east and collect the Blackglasses on the floor. Descend the staircase there.

Head west and collect the Max Ether on the table. Return east and go north from the staircase. Head east when you reach the top, collect TM49 Snatch, and then battle the Rocket Grunt. After defeating him, he drops the Lift Key and makes no attempt to retrieve it. Take the key. Return south, ascend the stairs, proceed north on the north arrow panel, take two steps west and two steps north, then east and north again. Ascend the stairs at the far east end. Step on the lower of the two arrow panels pointing west. You’ll be transported to the west side of the room. Collect the Moon Stone nearby, and then zigzag back east between the arrow panels to collect the X Speed in the northeast corner of the arrow panel area. Return to your original stopping point and step on the arrow panel just south, pointing east. Collect TM12 Taunt and step on the arrow panel pointing south at a stopper panel one tile away. From there, go east, step on the arrow panel there pointing east, go west from the stopper panel there, go east, south, and take the lower arrow panel. You’ll end up in front of a Super Potion. Collect it. Go north from there and step on either arrow panel; it doesn’t matter. From where you end up after that, take the arrow panel pointing south at a stopper panel one tile away again. Go to the arrow panel to the east again, and take the arrow panel to the west, but after you turn east and south, choose the upper arrow panel this time. Then take one step east and one step south. You’ve navigated the arrow panel maze.

Enter the room to the east. Avoid using the elevator just yet; ascend the stairs. Battle the Rocket Grunt to the west. In the northwest corner of the room, collect the Hyper Potion. Battle the Rocket Grunt to the east. Now you can return south down the stairs and use the elevator.

First, select B1F. Battle the Rocket Grunt to the west. If you need to heal your Pokémon, you can head north and back to Celadon City. Otherwise, use the elevator again and select B4F.

Head east; a Calcium is on the table. Return west and north, and battle the two Rocket Grunts on either side of the north door. It will open, allowing you to proceed north to face the boss.

Battle – Boss Giovanni

  • Pokémon: Onix Lv. 25, Rhyhorn Lv. 24, Kangaskhan Lv. 29

Onix and Rhyhorn are manageable, but his Kangaskhan is tougher. It uses Mega Punch and requires several non-Fighting attacks to defeat. After the battle, he drops the Silph Scope. Collect it. Now you can use the elevator, select B1F, go north, ascend the stairs, and you’re back in the Game Corner. Exit the Game Corner, Fly to Lavender Town, heal your Pokémon, and enter Pokémon Tower.

Pokémon Tower: Becalm the Spirits of Pokémon

  • Pokémon Found: Gastly, Cubone, Haunter

Pokémon Tower is a solemn place. The ground floor is filled with mourners for deceased Pokémon. The second floor contains your rival, and the upper floors are inhabited by Channelers and Ghost Pokémon.

Head east through the ground floor and ascend the stairs. The second floor is where you’ll encounter your Rival. Head north to find him. He delivers a harsh line, asking “Is your Pokémon dead?” (or, in the originals, “Your Pokémon don’t look dead!”) and then “Well, I can at least make them faint!” He then challenges you to a battle.

Battle – Rival

  • Pokémon: Pidgeotto Lv. 25, Growlithe/Gyarados/Exeggcute Lv. 23, Exeggcute/Growlithe/Gyarados Lv. 22, Kadabra Lv. 20, Wartortle/Ivysaur/Charmeleon Lv. 25

Your rival’s team composition depends on your starter Pokémon. His starter will be at level 25, Pidgeotto at level 25, Alakazam at level 20, and Rattata at level 15. The remaining two Pokémon will be a combination of Growlithe, Gyarados, and Exeggcute, depending on his starter choice.

After the battle, head west and ascend the staircase on the far west.

First, head north and east. Battle the Channeler and collect the Escape Rope. Return south and head east. Battle the Channeler directly ahead, then go north and battle the Channeler there. Proceed north past her, east, and then up the stairs.

As soon as you step west onto the next floor, a Channeler will battle you. Collect the Elixir directly north, go north, west, and collect the Awakening. Head south and battle the Channeler there. Collect the Great Ball. Head west, go north and battle the Channeler, then ascend the stairs.

Go north, east, and battle the Channeler at the north end. Continue east and battle the Channeler there. Head south near the other Channeler standing on a symbol; this is a healing zone. Step on it to heal your Pokémon. Collect the Cleanse Tag there, go south and battle the Channeler there. Go east and south, and battle the Channeler there; to her west, you’ll find a Nugget. Take the diagonal path north and east leading to the staircase.

Go west and battle that Channeler. Then head south to find an X Accuracy. Return north and battle the Channeler there, then go west. Turn south, battle the Channeler there, go west and then south. Collect the Rare Candy, and then head towards the staircase. Before you reach it, you will be challenged by a Ghost, which your Silph Scope identifies as Cubone’s mother: a level 30 Marowak. Defeat her, and her spirit will be calmed. Ascend the stairs.

Heading north, you’ll encounter Team Rocket Grunts.

Battle – Team Rocket Grunt

  • Pokémon: Zubat Lv. 25 (x2), Golbat Lv. 25

Battle – Team Rocket Grunt

  • Pokémon: Koffing Lv. 26, Drowzee Lv. 26

Battle – Team Rocket Grunt

  • Pokémon: Zubat Lv. 23 (x2), Rattata Lv. 23, Raticate Lv. 23

North of them, you’ll find Mr. Fuji. Speak to him. He says he came to calm Cubone’s mother’s spirit. Since you’ve already done that, he’ll take you to his home. Speak to Fuji again; he’ll talk about Pokémon bonds and give you the Poké Flute.

Exit Fuji’s house and head south to Route 12.

Route 12: Silence Bridge

  • Pokémon Found: Pidgey, Venonat, Gloom (FireRed only), Weepinbell (LeafGreen only), Oddish (FireRed only), Bellsprout (LeafGreen only)

Route 12, ironically named “Silence Bridge,” features upbeat music. It’s composed of piers with dead ends and Fishermen trainers.

Head south and enter the gatehouse. Ascend the stairs in the southeast corner; a girl there will give you TM27 Return because her Pokémon passed away. Exit the gatehouse and proceed through the route, battling the Fishermen along the way. When you reach an island of grass, there’s an invisible Hyper Potion in the exact center. The two people facing the sea to the south are a Young Couple who will battle you. Further south, you’ll encounter a Snorlax blocking the path. This is the same Snorlax that blocked Route 11. Save your game, then interact with it and use the Poké Flute.

Battle – Wild Snorlax

  • Level 30

This Snorlax is a challenging encounter. It uses Rest and holds a Chesto Berry, making it very annoying to catch. It can easily wipe out your team as you spend turns throwing Great Balls. Catch it if possible. If not, you’ll have a second chance to catch a Snorlax later with Ultra Balls and higher-level Pokémon.

Continue south along the route after catching or defeating Snorlax. If you need healing, head west to Vermilion City. Otherwise, proceed south. When you reach a house, enter it. The Fishing Guru’s younger brother is inside and will give you a Super Rod if you say you like fishing. Exit the house.

A Rocker trainer is just to the west; battle him, then continue south. You’ll reach a Camper trainer behind a Cuttable tree. Use Cut, battle him, and collect the Iron to his west. Continue south. Eventually, you’ll enter Route 13.

Route 13: Silence Bridge – Fuchsia City

  • Pokémon Found: Venonat, Oddish (FireRed only), Bellsprout (LeafGreen only), Pidgeotto, Pidgey, Ditto, Gloom (FireRed only), Weepinbell (LeafGreen only)

Route 13 is a maze-like route.

First, follow the rest of Silence Bridge past the corner and battle the trainers. Once you’re on land again, go slightly north and battle the two Beauty trainers. Head west, battling the Picnicker, and take the path north of her. When you reach a gap where you can go north, you can head east along that path to catch wild Pokémon in the grass (Ditto breeds with any Pokémon). Then go north near the wooden sign and head east to find a Cuttable tree and then a grass patch. Otherwise, continue west along the path, go south where it ends, and head west. You’ll find a Bird Keeper to battle. South of him and east, you’ll find a sign with a “trainer tip” hinting at something to the west. Return west to the Bird Keeper, go north, and head all the way east. You’ll find a Picnicker; battle her and go south into the small dead end to the west. Face the south tile of the dead end and press ‘A’ to find a PP Up.

Remember the place where you could turn east to find the grass patch? Go there, but instead of going north on the path with the wooden sign, go north on the path west of that one and proceed west. A Bird Keeper will challenge you there; defeat him and the Biker below him. Take the path just north of the Biker and head directly west.

Route 14: Why Couldn’t They Just Have Kept This As A Part Of Route 13?

  • Pokémon Found: Venonat, Oddish (FireRed only), Bellsprout (LeafGreen only), Pidgeotto, Pidgey, Ditto, Gloom (FireRed only), Weepinbell (LeafGreen only)

Route 14 is very similar to Route 13.

Continue west. You’ll reach the western edge of the route, with a Bird Keeper. Battle him, then return east until you reach a gap in the fence. Go south there and head west again. You’ll find another Bird Keeper. Go south past him, and just to the southeast, you’ll find a gap out of the maze.

Go south and battle the two Bird Keepers. Continue south, battle two more Bird Keepers, and then go south and slightly west to battle the Twins trainer duo. Just to their west, head north and battle the four Biker trainers. If you want to catch Pokémon, use Cut on that tree and enter the grass. Otherwise, head south and turn west once you’re back on the road. You’ll enter Route 15.

Route 15: Ton of Useless Routes – Fuchsia City

  • Pokémon Found: Venonat, Oddish (FireRed only), Bellsprout (LeafGreen only), Pidgeotto, Pidgey, Ditto, Gloom (FireRed only), Weepinbell (LeafGreen only)

Head west and battle the two Biker trainers. The grass patches here aren’t behind Cuttable trees, but the wild Pokémon are the same as on Route 13.

To the west of the Bikers, there are two Beauty trainers, also to battle, and west of them, a Picnicker. Then two Bird Keepers, and after that, another Picnicker. Finally, there’s a gatehouse. But first, return east through Route 15, use Cut on the tree just north, and take the upper path. A Picnicker is a short distance west, then a Crush Kin (Battle Girl and Black Belt duo), and then another Picnicker. Continue west; you’ll find TM18 Rain Dance, and then jump off the ledge and enter the gatehouse.

Ascend the stairs in the southeast corner; if you have registered 50 Pokémon in your Pokédex, Oak’s Aide will give you the EXP. Share. Otherwise, just pass through the gatehouse and continue west.

Fuchsia City: Behold! It’s Passion Pink!

Fuchsia City, despite its “Passion Pink” moniker, doesn’t appear particularly pink. It’s home to the Safari Zone, Koga’s Gym, and a Pokémon Center inconveniently located on a hill.

Heal your Pokémon. The Fuchsia City Pokémon Center is awkwardly located on a hill, requiring a detour to access it. However, you can jump off the ledge to the east of the Pokémon Center for a shortcut when leaving.

From the Pokémon Center, enter the first house to the east, the Safari Zone Warden’s house. Inside, you’ll find an old man who keeps a large boulder inside his house, blocking an item ball.

Exit the Warden’s house and enter the house to the east. The Fishing Guru’s older brother is inside and will give you a Good Rod if you say you like fishing. The Super Rod is technically superior, so the Good Rod is less useful.

Exit the house and head north towards the large, unusual house. Use Cut on the tree to the east of it, go north, use Cut on another tree, and enter the large house to the west. Proceed north and pay the 500 Pokédollar entrance fee to enter the Safari Zone.

Safari Zone: Play the Safari Game!

  • Pokémon Found (Center Area): Nidoran♂ (FireRed only), Nidorino, Nidoran♀ (LeafGreen only), Nidorina, Rhyhorn, Exeggcute, Venonat, Parasect, Scyther (FireRed only), Pinsir (LeafGreen only), Chansey
  • Pokémon Found (Area 1): Nidoran♂, Nidorino (FireRed only), Nidoran♀, Nidorina (LeafGreen only), Doduo, Exeggcute, Paras, Parasect, Kangaskhan, Scyther (FireRed only), Pinsir (LeafGreen only)
  • Pokémon Found (Area 2): Rhyhorn, Nidoran♂ (FireRed only), Nidorino, Nidoran♀ (LeafGreen only), Nidorina, Exeggcute, Paras, Venomoth, Chansey, Tauros
  • Pokémon Found (Area 3): Doduo, Nidoran♂, Nidorino (FireRed only), Nidoran♀, Nidorina (LeafGreen only), Exeggcute, Venonat, Venomoth, Tauros, Kangaskhan

This walkthrough prioritizes item collection over Pokémon catching in the Safari Zone to conserve steps. If you intend to catch Pokémon, your step count might run out before collecting all items.

First, head to the northeast corner and exit the Center Area. Head east into the grass, and stay south until you reach the wall. Then, go north up the stairs, collect the Leaf Stone, and head south. Turn west from the bottom of the rock formation, then south down the stairs. West, north, collect TM11 Sunny Day in the grassy strip extending into the water. Then, head all the way west and north to find a Max Potion. Ascend the stairs to the east and go over the rock. Head south and collect the Full Restore to the east. North, then west through the grass. Take the lower path (the upper one is a dead end) and head west. If you ascend the first stairs you see and go to the end of that rock, then head west, you’ll find a Quick Claw. Return, enter the grass to the west, and ascend the stairs there. Go over that rock and head north past the lakes. To the east, you’ll find TM47 Steel Wing. Continue east. Turn north when you enter the grass, then turn west. Collect the Protein. Continue west, and turn south when you enter the grass. Go past the lakes again, and go south into the next Area. Head south and collect the Gold Teeth. Head west, collect TM32 Double Team, and then enter the house. If you followed these directions, you should still have steps remaining.

Speak to the man inside. He’ll say you’re the first person to reach the Secret House and reward you with HM03 Surf. You can use your remaining Safari Zone steps to catch Pokémon if you wish.

Fuchsia City: Behold! It’s Passion Pink! (take two)

Assume your team is better suited for Poison-types than Psychic-types for now.

It’s time to challenge the Gym, but first, deliver the Gold Teeth to the Warden. The Warden is the old man with the boulder in his house. Speaking to him automatically delivers the Gold Teeth, and he gives you HM04 Strength. You can now use Strength to push the boulder and collect the Rare Candy it was blocking.

Before the Gym, get some practice on Cycling Road.

Cycling Road: Celadon City – Fuchsia City

  • Pokémon Found: Raticate, Doduo, Rattata, Spearow, Fearow

Fly to Celadon City to start Cycling Road from the north. Head west out of Celadon City via Route 16, and use the Poké Flute to wake up the Snorlax blocking the path. It’s level 30 like the previous one and your last chance to catch Snorlax if you missed the first. Stock up on Ultra Balls in Fuchsia City if needed.

After defeating/catching Snorlax, ensure you have a Bicycle. If not, Fly to Cerulean City, enter the Bike Shop, and exchange the Bike Voucher for a Bicycle. Return to Route 16 and enter the gatehouse. Upstairs, Professor Oak’s Aide will give you an Amulet Coin if you have registered 40 Pokémon in your Pokédex. Outside, you’ll see six Bikers (actually three Bikers and three Cue Balls). Battle them all, then head south on the west side. Your Bike will start moving south automatically.

Battle the cyclist riding north and south on the west road, then turn east and battle the one on the east road. You can train in the grass, but it’s inefficient. Battle the trainer south of the grass, head south on the eastmost road, battling trainers, until you can turn west. Do so, battle the cyclist riding north and south, and when you can turn east, do that. You’re now on the middle path. Cycle north and read the wooden signs. At the sign saying “Watch out for discarded items,” press ‘A’ around it to find a Full Restore or similar item. When you can turn west again, go slightly north and battle the trainer there. Let yourself slide south on the west road, battling the trainer along the way, and go all the way south until you reach a fence. Battle the cyclist circling there, then head south. You’ll exit the slope and enter Route 18; go all the way east into the gatehouse. Upstairs, a trainer will trade a Lickitung for a Golduck (FireRed) or Slowbro (LeafGreen). Exit the gatehouse and head south. Battle the three Bird Keepers (wild Pokémon are the same as Route 17) and head east. You’re back in Fuchsia City.

Fuchsia City: Behold! It’s Passion Pink! (take three)

Now it’s time for the Fuchsia Gym. Heal your Pokémon; Koga’s Gym is just west of the Pokémon Center.

This Gym features “invisible” walls, actually faintly visible dots in the corners of wall tiles. Navigate the maze.

First, head west and north to battle the first trainer.

Battle – Juggler Nate

  • Pokémon: Drowzee Lv. 34, Kadabra Lv. 34

Despite being a Poison Gym, four of Koga’s six junior trainers use Psychic-types. Use Bite if you have it.

Return south and all the way east. Go north there.

Battle – Juggler Kayden

  • Pokémon: Hypno Lv. 38

Hypno is tough, but with six Pokémon, you should manage. Exploit Psychic weaknesses. North, north again, and battle the next trainer.

Battle – Juggler Kirk

  • Pokémon: Drowzee Lv. 31 (x3), Kadabra Lv. 31

More Psychic-types. Defeat them and proceed north.

Battle – Tamer Edgar

  • Pokémon: Arbok Lv. 33 (x2), Sandslash Lv. 33

Finally, a junior trainer using Poison-types. They shouldn’t be too difficult. Go all the way north after beating him and turn west to the other side of the Gym. Go past the wall and find your way to the trainer south.

Battle – Tamer Phil

  • Pokémon: Sandslash Lv. 34, Arbok Lv. 34

Similar to Edgar, but slightly higher level. Turn south, then west after beating him, and battle the last junior trainer.

Battle – Juggler Shawn

  • Pokémon: Drowzee Lv. 34, Hypno Lv. 34

Back to Psychic-types. Shouldn’t be too hard. Heal your Pokémon, return the same way, turn east three tiles south of Shawn, save in front of Koga, and challenge the Gym Leader.

Battle – Leader Koga

  • Pokémon: Koffing Lv. 37, Muk Lv. 39, Koffing Lv. 37, Weezing Lv. 43

Koga’s Pokémon have high Defense. Koffing and Weezing have Levitate, weak only to Psychic. Psychic-types are effective here.

After defeating Koga, head to Cerulean, Lavender, Vermilion, or Celadon City, go to the gatehouse to Saffron City, speak to the guard, and give him the Tea.

Saffron City: Shining, Golden Land of Commerce

Saffron City’s Pokémon Center is in the southwest corner. Heal your Pokémon and head east. Enter the house with the mailbox and speak to the man inside (Mr. Psychic). He’ll give you TM29 Psychic.

Head to the northeast corner of the city. A Team Rocket Grunt blocks the official Saffron City Gym, but the smaller Gym to the west is open: the Fighting Dojo. Psychic-types are useful here.

Avoid walking in the middle to avoid battling trainers sequentially. If you walk in the middle, you’ll face trainers in this order:

Battle – Black Belt Hitoshi

  • Pokémon: Machop Lv. 31, Mankey Lv. 31, Primeape Lv. 31

Battle – Black Belt Hideki

  • Pokémon: Machop Lv. 32, Machoke Lv. 32

Battle – Black Belt Aaron

  • Pokémon: Primeape Lv. 36

Battle – Black Belt Mike

  • Pokémon: Mankey Lv. 31 (x2), Primeape Lv. 31

And then the Karate Master:

Battle – Black Belt Koichi

  • Pokémon: Hitmonlee Lv. 37, Hitmonchan Lv. 37

For beating him, choose either Hitmonlee (west Poké Ball) or Hitmonchan (east Poké Ball), both level 25.

Exit, head east and south, but south of the Lavender gatehouse, turn west. You’ll find Silph Co.’s office building, with a snoring Team Rocket guard outside.

Silph Co.: Team Rocket Takeover!

Silph Co. music is fittingly evil and chaotic.

Head all the way east past the fountain and north. Ascend the stairs (avoid elevator for now).

On the second floor, go south and battle the Rocket Grunt. Head west, battle the Rocket Grunt south, and enter the room to the east. Battle the Scientist, head east, and step on the teleport pad to the eighth floor. Battle the Scientist there and teleport back. Return to the stairs and ascend.

Go south along the west corridor. Battle the Rocket Grunt, and go all the way south. Head west and step on the teleport pad. You’ll find TM01 Focus Punch. Teleport back, return to the stairs, but before ascending, step on the teleport pad to the east. The woman inside will teach a Pokémon Thunder Wave. Return and ascend the stairs.

Go south and battle the Rocket Grunt in that room. Collect TM41 Torment on the table, then return north. Go south along the west corridor, go west at the south end, battle the Rocket Grunt, head west, and step on the teleport pad. Step on the teleport pad in the northwest corner of that room and battle the Scientist. Teleport back, and ascend the stairs to the fourth floor.

On the fifth floor, head east and battle the Rocket Grunt before teleporting. Battle the Rocket Grunt there, then teleport back. Head south through the door to the west. Battle the Juggler (Dalton) and return north. Head west, battle the Scientist, go south and battle the Rocket Grunt, step on the teleport pad, and battle the Scientist in that room. Teleport back and head east. Collect the Card Key, head west, teleport, step east on the teleport pad again, and head north. Open the door to the room where the Scientist is pacing and collect the Protein. Take the elevator back to the second floor, and go south there. Head all the way west and open the south door. Battle the Scientist, return east and ascend to the third floor. South along the west corridor, open the west door. Go through the room, open the door and collect the Hyper Potion. Battle the Scientist to the west, step on the teleport pad, head east, battle the Rocket Grunt, open the south door to the east, and go south there. Between the beds is a woman who heals Pokémon. Heal if needed, and return via the teleport pad. Go east through the rooms, north, and ascend to the fourth floor.

Go south along the west corridor. Open the west door at the far west end, and collect the three items: Escape Rope, Max Revive, and Full Heal. Return and ascend to the fifth floor, then to the sixth floor. Battle the Rocket Grunt to the west, enter the room, and navigate around the people. South end, exit the room, battle the Rocket Grunt, go west, north, battle the Scientist, and open the south door to the west. Collect the HP Up and X Special, then return north along the corridor and ascend the stairs.

Battle the Rocket Grunt to the south and east, and open the door to the room he guards. Collect TM08 Bulk Up. Exit the room, head west and battle the Rocket Grunt. Then head south along the center corridor, go west, battle the Scientist, and collect the Calcium. Return north along the corridor and ascend the stairs to the east. Battle the Rocket Grunt south, head west and south along the corridor, battle the Rocket Grunt, head east and north to find an Iron, and then return to the top and ascend the stairs.

Go south along the corridor and battle the Rocket Grunt at the south end. Open the west door and enter – it’s the healing room. Heal your Pokémon if needed, then return east, north along the corridor, and ascend the stairs.

Head west and battle the Scientist. Go south and enter that room; battle the Rocket Grunt and collect the items (Carbos, Rare Candy, and Ultra Ball). Return to the staircases and ascend to the final, eleventh floor.

…but you can’t enter the large room. Head east, go south and battle that Rocket Grunt, then collect the Zinc at the south end. Return north, descend the stairs, and descend again. Ninth floor… the healing room. Heal your Pokémon, head north and west through the door, past the Rocket Grunt, and east into the teleport pad. You’ll be in the room on the third floor with the Scientist. Go east and step on the teleport pad in the next room…

Your Rival??!!!

Yes, it’s him. Save your game before proceeding, and then head west.

Battle – Rival

  • Pokémon: Pidgeot Lv. 37, Growlithe/Gyarados/Exeggcute Lv. 38, Exeggcute/Growlithe/Gyarados Lv. 35, Alakazam Lv. 35, Blastoise/Venusaur/Charizard Lv. 40

Your rival’s team composition depends on your starter, similar to Pokémon Tower.

After defeating him, speak to the man there, and he will give you a level 25 Lapras. Heal your Pokémon, then return here. Go through the lower teleport pad in this room and head south. Battle the Rocket Grunt there, heal your Pokémon, and then return and open the south door. Save your game, go through, and Giovanni will challenge you.

Battle – Boss Giovanni

  • Pokémon: Nidorino Lv. 37, Rhyhorn Lv. 37, Nidoqueen Lv. 41, Kangaskhan Lv. 35

Giovanni’s Kangaskhan is still tough, but your team should be strong enough. Defeat him and head north to speak to the company President. He’ll give you a Master Ball. Exit the building.

Saffron City: Shining, Golden Land of Commerce (take two)

Team Rocket is gone from Saffron City. Speak to people if you wish, but mainly go to the house near the northwest corner: Copycat’s house, previously blocked by Team Rocket.

Enter and ascend the stairs. You’ll find Copycat, a Doduo, and two Poké Dolls. Speak to her. If you have a Poké Doll from Celadon Department Store in your bag, she’ll take it and teach a Pokémon Mimic.

Now, enter Sabrina’s Gym in the northeast corner of the city. Step on the teleport pad in the first room to reach the southeast room. Battle the trainer there.

Battle – Psychic Cameron

  • Pokémon: Slowpoke Lv. 33 (x2), Slowbro Lv. 33

After the battle, step on the southwest teleport pad in his room, and battle the trainer in the southwest room.

Battle – Channeler Tasha

  • Pokémon: Gastly Lv. 33 (x2), Haunter Lv. 33

Next, step on the northwest teleport pad to reach the northeast room.

Battle – Psychic Johan

  • Pokémon: Kadabra Lv. 31 (x2), Mr. Mime Lv. 31, Slowpoke Lv. 31

Step on the southwest pad for the northwest room.

Battle – Psychic Preston

  • Pokémon: Slowbro Lv. 38

The northeast pad leads to the north-center room.

Battle – Channeler Amanda

  • Pokémon: Gastly Lv. 34, Haunter Lv. 34

It’s the northwest pad now, for the center-east room.

Battle – Psychic Tyron

  • Pokémon: Mr. Mime Lv. 34, Kadabra Lv. 34

Southwest teleport pad takes you to the center-west room.

Battle – Channeler Stacy

  • Pokémon: Haunter Lv. 38

Now you’ve battled all junior trainers. Step on the northeast pad. It takes you to the north-center room. Then take southwest twice and northwest twice, and you’re in the center room, Sabrina’s room.

Battle – Leader Sabrina

  • Pokémon: Kadabra Lv. 38, Mr. Mime Lv. 37, Venomoth Lv. 38, Alakazam Lv. 43

Sabrina’s Mr. Mime uses Barrier and Calm Mind, then passes stat boosts. Defeat Mr. Mime quickly. She favors Future Sight. Use Fly to avoid it. The Marsh Badge makes Pokémon up to level 70 obey. She gives TM04 Calm Mind. Fly to Fuchsia City.

Fuchsia City: Behold! It’s Passion Pink! (take four)

Teach Strength to a Pokémon. Jump off the ledge east of the Pokémon Center and enter the Warden’s house. Interact with the boulder and use Strength. Push the boulder west, and it will move, revealing a Rare Candy.

Return north to the Pokémon Center hill, and head south.

Sea Route 19: Fuchsia City – Seafoam Islands

  • Pokémon Found: Tentacool

Head south, down ledges or the path beside them. Battle the two Swimmer trainers, interact with the water, and use Surf. Head south and battle all Swimmer trainers, then turn west.

Sea Route 20: Fuchsia City – Seafoam Islands

  • Pokémon Found: Tentacool

Route 20 already. Head west and battle trainers, and you’ll reach an island. Enter the cave as you can’t Surf between the rocks. Battle the Swimmer to the west first, then enter Seafoam Islands.

Seafoam Islands: Home of Articuno

  • Pokémon: Zubat, Psyduck (FireRed only), Golduck (FireRed only), Slowpoke (LeafGreen only), Slowbro (LeafGreen only), Golbat, Seel, Dewgong

Seafoam Islands features Viridian Forest’s music. It’s an icy cave, fitting Articuno better than the original look.

Head east, use Strength on the boulder, and push it into the hole. Return north and onto the platform. Collect the Ice Heal and descend the ladder. Head south and onto the platform to the east. Go all the way east to find a Revive. Head north past the ladder, go south off the platform to the east, and push that boulder into the hole. Return to the platform and descend the ladder. Head south down the stairs and collect the Big Pearl to the west. Ascend the ladder to the east and collect the Water Stone in that room, then return south and head west to descend the stairs on the far west. There, turn east, go south and off the platform. Turn west and use Strength to push the eastmost boulder upwards twice. Then go north of the boulder to its west and push it south one tile. Then stand east and push it west once. Be careful not to push it further or fall into the hole. Push the boulder north of the hole to the west, and push the boulder near the other hole into it. Return to the boulder you left earlier and push it west two tiles, then go north and push it into the hole.

Return east and north onto the platform. Descend the stairs in the northwest, and walk south to find an Ultra Ball to the east. You can see how you’ve blocked the current with boulders to the west, but otherwise, go north again and Surf into the water south of the ladder you came from. Head north to find a platform with Articuno. Enter and SAVE YOUR GAME! Then speak to Articuno.

Battle – Wild Articuno

  • Level 50

Articuno requires strategy for capture. Use Sleep Powder, Spore, Hypnosis, or Yawn if available. Thunder Wave or Stun Spore are alternatives. Weaken it without Electric or Fire attacks. Use weak attacks or False Swipe to get it to low HP. Then, inflict sleep, and throw Ultra Balls. If you run out of balls or faint it, reset and try again. Catching Articuno may take multiple attempts. After capture, return to land and ascend the stairs. North on the platform, west, south, up the ladder. Go onto the platform and ascend the ladder to the east. Go north and into that hole. Push the boulder into the hole with Strength, and head west up the ladder. Go south and then north onto the middle platform; climb the ladder. Go east, get off the platform and push the boulder into the hole. Descend the stairs just north, and push the boulder down this hole too. Let yourself fall after it, and push it into the final hole. Follow east through it. You’ll be surfing. Go onto the platform to the east and ascend the ladder to the south. Ascend the next ladder, then go south and ascend the next ladder.

YOU’RE FREE! Light is visible to the east. Exit Seafoam Islands.

Sea Route 20: Seafoam Islands – Cinnabar Island (part two)

  • Pokémon Found: Tentacool

Head north until you reach rubble patches. Go west and press ‘A’ on the northwest small stone for an invisible Moon Stone.

Head north, and turn east past the stairs. A Poké Ball between pillars contains an Escape Rope. Head to the northwest room and battle the Youngster. Interact with the statue to press a secret switch. Head east out of that room and south into a previously closed room. In the southeast corner, there’s a Protein. Exit and take the south path to the west. Don’t ignore the stairs this time. Ascend them.

Head south, ignoring the statue, and battle the Burglar. Go south along the east corridor. East, find a Zinc on checkered floor. West, a room with a diary:

Diary: July 10 We christened the newly discovered Pokémon, Mew.

Return north along the corridor. Past the stairs, you can turn east. Enter the north room. Diary on table:

Head north and collect HP Up, then return up the stairs. Fall down the LARGER gap (west one). You’ll be in a room with a Scientist south. Battle him. Go south and east, collect the Carbos in the corner, and descend the stairs.

Head north. East door is closed, so turn west. Go south past that room and turn west to find a Full Restore at the end of that corridor. Return to the room entrance, enter, and battle the Burglar. Read the diary:

Diary: Sept. 1 Mewtwo is far too powerful. We have failed to curb its vicious tendencies…

Walk north to the statue and press the secret switch. Exit the room to the west. Return towards the stairs, but the east door is now open.

Go east through it and battle the Scientist. Head north into the statue room, but don’t press the switch yet. Invisible Elixir on the second tile from the east and south. Exit the room and head west. Another door north; enter to find TM14 Blizzard to the east. Exit, return to the other room, and press the secret switch on the statue. Exit, head west along the corridor, and enter the now open west room.

On the table, a Poké Ball: the Secret Key. Collect it. Go south first and get TM22 Solarbeam. Exit the mansion.

One Island: Friends Gather at Knot Island

Arriving at One Island, Bill takes you to the Pokémon Center to meet Celio. Celio explains his computer system issues. Bill asks you to deliver a Meteorite to Two Island Game Corner. Celio gives a Tri-Pass for travel between One, Two, and Three Islands and updates your Town Map. Leave the Pokémon Center and return to the ferry. Sail to Two Island.

Two Island: Boon Island for Two

Pokémon Center to the west. Take the south path first. Use Cut on the tree and go east to find a Revive. Go north onto the Pokémon Center platform. East, a vendor sells Great Balls and Fresh Water. Southeast, the Pokémon Move Maniac teaches forgotten moves for Tinymushrooms or Big Mushrooms (from wild Paras and Parasect). East of that house is the Game Corner. Enter.
