Pallet Town: Your Adventure Begins

Pallet Town, your quaint hometown, sets the stage for your grand Pokémon journey. The tranquil music and simple, red-roofed houses create a nostalgic atmosphere. It’s also, somewhat inexplicably, home to the renowned Professor Oak. Lucky you!

Before rushing out, interact with the PC in your room. Navigate to ‘Item Storage’ and withdraw the Potion. Every bit helps in these early stages. Now, head downstairs. Your mom, ever supportive, will acknowledge the rite of passage that is leaving home for a Pokémon adventure. No soccer mom clichés here, just pure encouragement.

Stepping outside, you might encounter a townsperson fascinated by the ‘START’ menu sign – a humorous detail highlighting the game’s interface. While Pallet Town is small, feel free to explore. Your rival’s sister resides in the house to the right, but she’ll simply mention he’s at Professor Oak’s lab.

The lab is located at the bottom of town. Your rival will be there, stating Oak’s absence. It’s clear Oak isn’t around, prompting you to head towards the town’s exit, located upwards, towards the tall grass. Just as you venture towards the exit, Professor Oak dramatically appears, warning of danger and ushering you into his lab.

Inside, the pivotal moment arrives: choosing your first Pokémon. You’re presented with three classic options: Bulbasaur (Grass), Squirtle (Water), or Charmander (Fire).

Make your selection wisely! Consider your preferred playstyle and future team composition. For those who are particular, you might spend some time resetting to get your desired gender and nature. Once you’ve made your choice, step outside, and your rival will immediately challenge you to a battle. Professor Oak provides a brief tutorial on Pokémon battling, and then the rivalry ignites!

Battle – Rival

Pokémon: Bulbasaur/Charmander/Squirtle Lv. 5

Your rival will always choose the Pokémon with a type advantage over yours. If you chose Bulbasaur, he’ll have Charmander; Charmander means he’ll have Squirtle, and Squirtle results in Bulbasaur for your rival. Despite the type disadvantage, victory is achievable. At this early stage, none of the starters know type-specific attacks. Focus on using Tackle and Growl (if available) to weaken your opponent. Defeating your rival earns you 80 Pokédollars, and Professor Oak offers congratulations. With your first battle under your belt, you are now ready to leave Pallet Town and venture onto Route 1.

Route 1: From Pallet Town to Viridian City

Pokémon found: Rattata, Pidgey

Route 1’s music is upbeat, perhaps a bit too cheerful for some, and the route itself is primarily grassy and straightforward. It’s a short path, serving as a gentle introduction to wild Pokémon encounters.

Navigate through the first patch of tall grass and turn left. Engage in battles with any wild Pokémon that appear to gain early experience for your starter. You’ll encounter a helpful individual in an apron who will gift you a Potion – a welcome addition to your inventory. Continue right, traverse the rectangular patch of grass, turn left, and proceed upwards through the gap in the ledge. Turn right again, ascend through the two grass patches, and then slightly left to reach the path leading to Viridian City. Route 1 is a quick transition, preparing you for the first city in your adventure.

Viridian City: The Eternally Green Paradise

Viridian City lives up to its name, bathed in greenery with bushes adorning the landscape and houses sporting green roofs. Upon entering, you might be puzzled by an old man obstructing the main path, claiming he needs his coffee before anyone can pass. The city’s music is a pleasant remix of the original, retaining a familiar feel with added depth.

Your immediate priority should be the Pokémon Center to heal your Pokémon after your journey through Route 1. Afterwards, attempt to understand the old man’s peculiar roadblock – you’ll likely fail, as there’s no immediate solution. Venture into the Poké Mart, and the clerk will instantly recognize you and entrust you with a Parcel to deliver to Professor Oak. He declines to sell you anything until the delivery is made, so you have no choice but to backtrack to Pallet Town.

Route 1: Pallet Town Delivery Run

Pokémon found: Rattata, Pidgey

This return trip to Pallet Town offers a convenient shortcut. Utilize the ledges to jump down, bypassing the need to battle wild Pokémon again. Navigate through the grass, making your way back to your hometown swiftly. It’s a quick errand, reinforcing the interconnectedness of the early game locations.

Pallet Town: Parcel Delivery and Pokédex

Back in Pallet Town, if your Pokémon sustained any damage on the brief return trip, visit your mom to have them healed. Otherwise, proceed directly to Professor Oak’s lab. Speak with him, and he’ll commend your talent and promptly accept the Parcel. Your rival then bursts in, interrupting the moment.

It turns out Professor Oak planned to give both of you Pokédexes all along. He presents you and your rival with these essential tools for any aspiring Pokémon Trainer, along with five Poké Balls – a generous upgrade from the original games.

Professor Oak elaborates on his age and ambition to document all Pokémon, a task he now entrusts to you. Your rival, in typical competitive fashion, declares he doesn’t need your help and intends to get a Town Map from his sister, boasting that you won’t receive one. However, his reverse psychology hints otherwise. Visiting your rival’s house confirms this – his sister gifts you a Town Map, a crucial item for navigating the Kanto region. Equipped with Poké Balls and a map, it’s time to revisit Route 1, prepared to catch Pokémon this time.

Route 1: Catching and Training

Pokémon found: Rattata, Pidgey

By now, Route 1 is familiar territory. The key difference this time is the ability to catch wild Pokémon using the Poké Balls Professor Oak provided. As you traverse the route again, take the opportunity to weaken and catch Rattata and Pidgey to expand your team and gain valuable experience. Catching Pokémon is essential for completing your Pokédex and strengthening your party for future challenges.

Viridian City: Teachy TV and Route 22

Heal your Pokémon once more at the Viridian City Pokémon Center. It’s advisable to purchase additional Poké Balls at the Poké Mart, ensuring you have enough for upcoming encounters. The old man who was previously blocking the path is now standing aside, having had his coffee. He will demonstrate how to catch a Weedle and gift you the Teachy TV, a helpful item with tutorials about Pokémon basics, hosted by the amusing “Poké Dude.”

Head left from the city entrance and take the first upward path. Follow the narrow trail to what appears to be a Poké Ball on the ground – it’s actually a Potion, cleverly disguised. Return to the main path and continue left, heading towards Route 22.

Route 22: Rival Battle and Indigo Plateau Outskirts

Pokémon found: Rattata, Mankey, Spearow

Route 22 diverges from the main storyline path, leading towards the Indigo Plateau, the location of the Pokémon League. The music here is more dynamic and adventurous. It’s recommended to catch a Mankey in the initial grass patches. Mankey, a Fighting-type Pokémon, can be a valuable asset early in the game.

After some training, proceed upwards (the lower path leads nowhere). Save your game before venturing leftward, as your rival awaits you for another battle.

Battle – Rival

Pokémon: Pidgey Lv. 9, Bulbasaur/Charmander/Squirtle Lv. 9

This battle is noticeably tougher than your first encounter. Your rival’s Pidgey is particularly annoying with Sand-Attack, which lowers your Pokémon’s accuracy. Focus on defeating Pidgey first, saving your strongest Pokémon for later. After defeating Pidgey, concentrate on your rival’s starter. Victory here is rewarding, but it’s wise to return to Viridian City to heal your Pokémon afterwards.

Viridian City: Gym Locked and Route 2

Heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center again. If you wish, you can briefly visit the Viridian Gym to the right, but you’ll find it locked for now. Proceed upwards from Viridian City to enter Route 2.

Route 2: Path to Viridian Forest

Pokémon found: Rattata, Pidgey, Caterpie, Weedle

Route 2 shares the same music as Route 1. It’s a short route with a single patch of grass and some Cuttable trees that are currently inaccessible without the HM Cut.

Simply walk upwards and enter the large building at the top, which serves as a gatehouse, leading to Viridian Forest.

Viridian Forest: Navigating the Maze

Pokémon found: Weedle, Caterpie, Kakuna, Metapod, Pikachu

Viridian Forest marks a significant shift in atmosphere. The music becomes mysterious and eerie, and the forest itself is designed as a maze. The game introduces first-person perspective views in certain areas, adding to the immersive experience.

Upon entering, proceed upwards and interact with the left side of the large tree in front of the Youngster trainer. You’ll discover an Antidote. Take the left path and then turn upwards to find another item on the ground, a Potion. Retrace your steps and take the right path from the forest entrance. Collect the item in the grass patch to the far right. Continue upwards, choosing either the left or right path, depending on whether you want to encounter more wild Pokémon. The paths will converge again. Turn right and proceed upwards. Turn left, battle the trainer, keep walking, go down, ignore the right path, go further down, left, up, left, battle another trainer, down, right, obtain the item, left, up, and battle another trainer. Interact with the grass tile next to the trees directly opposite the last trainer to find a Potion. Continue upwards, and you’ll reach another gatehouse, marking the exit of Viridian Forest.

Route 2: Pewter City Bound

Pokémon found: Rattata, Pidgey, Caterpie, Weedle

You’re now in the second part of Route 2, situated after Viridian Forest. This section of Route 2 is extremely short. Turn slightly right and walk directly upwards to reach Pewter City.

Pewter City: The Stone Gray City

Pewter City’s music is similar to Viridian City’s but with a different ambiance. The houses are white with gray roofs, and the city features trees, a garden, a museum, and the Pewter Gym, home to Brock, the Rock-type Gym Leader.

Heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center first. If you’re interested in fossils and Pokémon history, visit the museum and pay the 50P entrance fee. Otherwise, focus on training your Pokémon to prepare for the Pewter Gym battle.

When ready, proceed upwards past the Pokémon Center, turn left, then down, and finally right to reach the Pewter Gym.

Battle – Camper Liam

Pokémon: Geodude Lv. 10, Sandshrew Lv. 11

Camper Liam is the first trainer inside the Pewter Gym. If you caught a Mankey on Route 22 as suggested, Low Kick will be highly effective against Geodude. For Sandshrew, utilize other Pokémon in your party, avoiding Pikachu due to its Electric-type disadvantage against Ground-types. Victory against Liam indicates you are ready to challenge Brock. Heal your Pokémon before proceeding. Save your game in front of Brock to prepare for the Gym Leader battle.

Battle – Gym Leader Brock

Pokémon: Geodude Lv. 12, Onix Lv. 14

Brock is your first major challenge. If you chose Squirtle or Bulbasaur as your starter, their Water and Grass-type attacks will make this battle significantly easier. However, for Charmander trainers and those seeking a more strategic approach, careful planning is needed.

Consider using Growl to lower Geodude’s Attack stat while Geodude uses Defense Curl. This will mitigate Geodude’s Rock Throw attack. Mankey’s Low Kick is again effective against both Geodude and Onix due to their Rock/Ground typing. In the Advance generation games and beyond, Low Kick’s power scales with the opponent’s weight, making it particularly potent against heavy Pokémon like Onix. Two well-placed Low Kicks should defeat Onix. Victory over Brock earns you the Boulder Badge, your first Gym Badge!

Brock also rewards you with TM39, Rock Tomb. While you might be tempted to teach it to Mankey, consider its long-term usefulness before committing. After the battle, heal your Pokémon and exit Pewter City to the east. Professor Oak’s Aide will stop you and present you with Running Shoes, a gift from your mom. Now you can hold down the B button to run, significantly increasing your travel speed.

Route 3: Trainer Encounters and Mt. Moon Ahead

Pokémon found: Pidgey, Spearow, Mankey, Jigglypuff, Nidoran♂, Nidoran♀

Route 3 is densely populated with trainers, offering ample opportunities for experience gain. Engage in every trainer battle you encounter. Pay special attention to the Youngster trainer facing downwards just after the Bug Catcher. This is the “Shorts are comfy!” guy, a memorable quote for Pokémon fans, though the translation has been slightly altered in Fire Red and Leaf Green.

After navigating the cluster of trainers, you’ll encounter a Lass trainer who says “Eek! Did you touch me?” regardless of your character’s gender. Beyond her, there’s a patch of grass that you can bypass if you choose. Continue right until you reach another grass patch and a Youngster trainer. The grass patch is a dead end, and the Youngster is not a trainer. Turn upwards to proceed towards Route 4 and Mt. Moon.

Route 4: Pewter City to Mt. Moon Entrance

Pokémon found: None in this part

This section of Route 4 is sandy and rocky. It primarily serves as a transition to Mt. Moon. Simply walk upwards until you reach a Pokémon Center, conveniently located near the entrance to Mt. Moon. Heal your Pokémon, and if you’re feeling adventurous (or foolish), you can buy a Magikarp from the salesman inside for 500 Pokédollars. While seemingly weak, Magikarp evolves into the powerful Gyarados, making it a worthwhile investment for some players. Enter Mt. Moon to begin your cave exploration.

Mt. Moon: Cave Exploration and Team Rocket Encounters

Pokémon found: Geodude, Zubat, Paras, Clefairy

Mt. Moon features “lonely” music, fitting the cave’s atmosphere and its connection to meteorites. The cave is filled with Pokémon, trainers, Team Rocket members, items, and fossils.

Begin by heading up and then left. TM09, Bullet Seed, is located on the right side in this area. Continuing upwards and slightly left will lead you to a Paralyze Heal. Battle the Bug Catcher to the right (who has a Weedle and a Kakuna at level 11), then proceed right and battle the Lass trainer with a Clefairy. Navigate through the wild Pokémon encounters, turn up, right, then down, avoiding the stairway for now. Battle the Super Nerd, and collect the Potion slightly to his left. Head right, pick up the Rare Candy, go up and slightly left to battle another Bug Catcher. Retrace your steps down and right, then head straight upwards to find an Escape Rope. Continue upwards, head left, battle the Lass trainer running in circles, and now take the stairway just below her. Traverse the tunnel and take the other staircase to battle your first Team Rocket Grunt!

After defeating the Rocket Grunt, head right and upwards to collect a Star Piece. Return left and ascend the stairs, go through the tunnel and back. Head right, past the Lass trainer, down, down the stairs, left through the short tunnel, down the next stairs, and battle another Rocket Grunt. Interact with the rock to the right to find an Ether. Go up and collect TM46 (Thief). Return through the tunnel.

Head slightly down, then left and battle the Youngster. Go further left, then up and battle the Hiker trainer. Collect the Moon Stone in the top left corner of this room. Descend the stairs. Follow the tunnel and descend the stairs at the end. Go straight upwards to find a Revive. Return down and turn right. Go down and right to battle another Rocket Grunt. Proceed right, up, right, and down. Take a few steps left, then further down, left, up, and battle another Rocket Grunt. Go up and right into the small dead end and interact with the rock to find another Moon Stone. Return left from the dead end and attempt to pass the Super Nerd. He will stop you, claiming the fossils are his and initiate a battle. After defeating him, you get to choose one of the fossils for yourself.

Choose your fossil: Helix Fossil for Omanyte or Dome Fossil for Kabuto. Head left and descend the stairs. Collect the Antidote and ascend the stairs. Traverse the small tunnel, ascend the stairs, and you’ll emerge into the daylight, exiting Mt. Moon.

Route 4: Move Tutors and Cerulean City Approach

Pokémon found: Rattata, Spearow, Mankey, Ekans (FireRed only), Sandshrew (LeafGreen only)

The second half of Route 4 is bumpy and grassy. It features the first two Move Tutors in the game.

Head right from the cave exit and upwards towards the two karate trainers. They are not battle trainers. The left trainer teaches Mega Punch, and the right trainer teaches Mega Kick. Both are convinced their attack is superior, but neither move is particularly powerful in the long run. Jump down from the ledge and head right. Go up when you reach the trees, a few steps left and up to collect TM05, Roar. Then head right and jump down onto the path leading to Cerulean City. You are now committed to Cerulean City until you obtain Fly. The grass patch below and to the left contains wild Pokémon from Route 4 if you wish to train further. Otherwise, proceed into Cerulean City.

Cerulean City: Water Gym and Nugget Bridge

Cerulean City’s music can be divisive, and it is known as the home of Misty, the Water-type Gym Leader. The city has plot progression elements and access to Nugget Bridge.

Heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center. The Bike Shop offers a humorous “BIKE 1,000,000” or “NO THANKS” option. A girl’s Electrode has been replaced with a Slowbro, and the Jynx trade with a Poliwhirl is still available. An officer stands guard in front of a robbed house. Misty’s Gym is accessible, and a new Berry Crushing enthusiast resides in the city.

Prepare your Pokémon for a rival battle and head towards Nugget Bridge to the north.

Battle – Rival

Pokémon: Pidgeotto Lv. 17, Abra Lv. 16, Bulbasaur/Charmander/Squirtle Lv. 18, Rattata Lv. 15

This rival battle is considerably tougher, especially his Pidgeotto. Even paralyzed, it can be a challenge. After defeating him, he will give you a Fame Checker and deliver some comical lines about his indifference to others. Heal your Pokémon again and proceed towards Nugget Bridge.

Route 24: Nugget Bridge Challenge

Pokémon found: Abra, Oddish (FireRed only), Bellsprout (LeafGreen only), Caterpie, Kakuna, Pidgey, Weedle, Metapod

Route 24, also known as Nugget Bridge, plays the intro music. It’s a linear path with a series of trainers to battle, culminating in a Team Rocket encounter.

Battle the trainers in succession:

Battle – Bug Catcher Cale

Pokémon: Caterpie Lv. 10, Weedle Lv. 10, Metapod Lv. 10, Kakuna Lv. 10

Battle – Lass Ali

Pokémon: Pidgey Lv. 12, Oddish Lv. 12, Bellsprout Lv. 12

Battle – Youngster Timmy

Pokémon: Sandshrew Lv. 14, Ekans Lv. 14

Battle – Lass Reli

Pokémon: Nidoran♂ Lv. 16, Nidoran♀ Lv. 16

Battle – Camper Ethan

Pokémon: Mankey Lv. 18

After defeating Camper Ethan, heal your Pokémon if necessary and speak to the person at the end of the bridge to receive a Nugget, which can be sold for 5000 Pokédollars. He will reveal himself as a Team Rocket Grunt and attempt to recruit you. Decline his offer and prepare for a battle.

Battle – Team Rocket Grunt

Pokémon: Ekans Lv. 15, Zubat Lv. 15

Despite his Team Rocket affiliation, this Grunt is relatively weak. Zubat’s Supersonic can be annoying, but overall, it’s a manageable battle. He will continue to try and recruit you briefly before you can proceed.

After Nugget Bridge, head left and battle the trainer hiding in the grass. If you intend to catch an Abra, simply throw a Poké Ball immediately without weakening it; Abra is notorious for teleporting away.

Collect TM45, Attract, located nearby. Then proceed down to the right towards Route 25.

Route 25: Path to Bill’s Sea Cottage

Pokémon found: Abra, Oddish (FireRed only), Bellsprout (LeafGreen only), Caterpie, Kakuna, Pidgey, Weedle, Metapod

Route 25 is similar to Route 24 in terms of Pokémon and layout. It’s a path leading to Bill’s Sea Cottage.

Battle the trainers along the route. When you reach a trainer and a Cuttable bush blocking an item, ensure the trainer walks far enough up to you so you can access the item, which is TM43, Secret Power. Continue onward until you reach Bill’s Sea Cottage.

Enter the cottage. It appears empty except for a Clefairy on the floor. Talk to the Clefairy, and it will reveal itself to be Bill, transformed due to a failed experiment. He requests your help. Agree to assist him to progress the storyline.

Bill enters a Teleporter device, and you interact with the computer to run the Cell Separator program. After some visual effects, Bill emerges from the Teleporter, restored to his human form. Speak to him, and he will reward you with an S.S. Ticket, crucial for accessing the S.S. Anne later in Vermilion City.

Exit the cottage and head straight down. Take the lower path back towards Cerulean City, retracing your steps through Route 24.

Cerulean City: Misty Gym Battle

Return to Cerulean City and heal your Pokémon. It’s time to challenge Misty at the Cerulean Gym.

Misty’s Gym is located on the right side of the city. Her two junior trainers are relatively easy to defeat. One uses a level 16 Horsea, and the other uses a level 19 Goldeen. Goldeen’s Horn Attack can be surprisingly strong, and it knows Supersonic.

Battle – Gym Leader Misty

Pokémon: Staryu Lv. 18, Starmie Lv. 21

Misty claims to favor an all-out offensive strategy with Water Pokémon. However, her Starmie is quite resilient, equipped with a Super Potion and the move Recover. Poison-type moves can be surprisingly effective against Misty’s Pokémon. Butterfree’s Poison Powder can inflict consistent damage, and the AI may not prioritize healing over attacking, giving you an advantage. If you have a Pokémon capable of poisoning, consider using it.

After defeating Misty and exiting the Gym, heal your Pokémon. The girl with Slowbro and the police officer in front of the robbed house are now gone. Enter the robbed house.

The house is in disarray, with footprints leading through a hole in the wall. Go through the hole and speak to the suspicious-looking person. He claims to be an innocent bystander, but the “suspicious guy” music betrays him. He is, in fact, a Team Rocket Grunt who robbed the house and is forced to battle you.

Battle – Team Rocket Grunt

Pokémon: Machop Lv. 17, Drowzee Lv. 17

This Rocket Grunt should not be too difficult. A level 17 Pidgey can handle him easily. Be cautious of Drowzee’s Hypnosis.

Upon defeat, he will drop TM28, Dig, which he stole. He then “blasts off,” fleeing the scene. The original homeowner will not reclaim the TM, so you get to keep it.

Take the path down from the house’s backyard. To the right, a Cuttable bush blocks access to an area you cannot yet reach without Cut. Continue downwards and left. You can jump down the ledge to access the grass or simply follow the road down and left towards Route 5.

Route 5: Underground Path to Vermilion City

Pokémon found: Pidgey, Meowth, Oddish (FireRed only), Bellsprout (LeafGreen only)

If you take the bumpy path, you can catch Meowth in the grass. Meowth has the Pickup ability, allowing it to find items after battles, which can be helpful even if you don’t use Meowth in your team. The Day-Care is also located on Route 5, but it only accommodates one Pokémon at this point.

The road to Saffron City is blocked by a thirsty guard. Enter the house to the right to access the Underground Path to Vermilion City. A little girl inside will offer a trade: the version-exclusive Nidoran in your game for the opposite version’s Nidoran.

Descend the stairs, traverse the tunnel, and emerge on the other side. Exit the building to find yourself on Route 6.

Route 6: Vermilion City Approach

Pokémon found: Pidgey, Meowth, Oddish (FireRed only), Bellsprout (LeafGreen only)

Route 6 features the same Pokémon as Route 5. Head left and battle the Bug Catcher. Follow the road down, battle the two trainers along the path, and then head right to battle a Bug Catcher with a level 20 Butterfree. Be cautious as this Butterfree is stronger than typical Bug Catcher Pokémon. Go left and down, battle two more trainers, and you’ll arrive in Vermilion City.

Vermilion City: S.S. Anne and Lt. Surge

Vermilion City, known as the Port of Exquisite Sunsets, is your gateway to the S.S. Anne and the Vermilion Gym.

Heal your Pokémon first. Speak to the woman near the counter in the Pokémon Center to receive the VS. Seeker, an item that allows you to rematch trainers.

Visit the house to the left of the Pokémon Center, the Fishing Guru’s house. He will give you an Old Rod if you express interest in fishing. Head right past the Pokémon Center, down, and left to the Pokémon Fan Club.

Enter the Fan Club and speak to the Chairman, seated on the left side of the top sofa. Endure his lengthy bragging session about his Pokémon and you will receive a Bike Voucher, redeemable for a free Bicycle in Cerulean City’s Bike Shop.

In the house to the right of the Pokémon Fan Club, a kid will trade a Farfetch’d for a Spearow. Now, head right towards Route 11.

Route 11: Trainer Battles and Diglett’s Cave Access

Pokémon found: Ekans (FireRed only), Sandshrew (LeafGreen only), Spearow, Drowzee

Route 11 is densely packed with trainers, making it an excellent location for training. The old Gamblers have been renamed Gamers, but Engineers remain. Battle all trainers you encounter. Interact with the tree in the top right corner to find an Escape Rope, and an Awakening is located in the top left corner of the route. An X Defend is visible in the middle of the route. Below the guardhouse, a hidden path leads to a Great Ball.

After battling all trainers, proceed to the guardhouse on the right. The guards mention the Name Rater and Rock Tunnel. Upstairs, a person will trade a Nidorina for a Nidorino (FireRed) or vice versa (LeafGreen). Professor Oak’s Aide upstairs will gift you an Itemfinder if you have 30 Pokémon in your Pokédex. Binoculars praise Rock Tunnel. Snorlax blocks the path to the right of the guardhouse, so return to Vermilion City.

Vermilion City: S.S. Anne Adventure

Heal your Pokémon and head to the harbor at the far right of Vermilion City. Use the S.S. Ticket Bill gave you to board the S.S. Anne.

S.S. Anne: Exploring the Luxury Liner

The S.S. Anne is a multi-level ship filled with trainers, items, and puzzles.

Start by exploring all cabins on the left side of the ship, from left to right. Battle trainers, collect items. The cabin directly below the entrance on the right side contains a woman who will heal your Pokémon. Go down the stairs located there. A Hyper Potion is hidden in the trash can below the stairs. Battle trainers in the cabins on this lower level. Return upstairs and then go further up.

Go all the way left again and turn down to find the kitchen. A Great Ball is in the bottom left corner, and Berries are in the trash cans on the right. Exit the kitchen and ascend the stairs above. Battle trainers on this floor, but avoid going up the stairs on the right side for now. Return left and ascend the stairs in the bottom left corner to reach the deck. Battle all trainers on the deck.

Heal your Pokémon again using the woman in the cabin on the lower level (deck, corridor, down staircase, up staircase, right to second-last cabin). Return to the deck (out of deck, corridor, down staircase, up staircase, and left). Save your game and proceed upwards to encounter your rival.

Battle – Rival

Pokémon: Pidgeotto Lv. 19, Raticate Lv. 16, Kadabra Lv. 18, Ivysaur/Wartortle/Charmeleon Lv. 20

This rival battle is not significantly harder than previous encounters. Your Pokémon should have leveled up considerably since your last battle.

Continue upwards and interact with the Captain. You will cure his seasickness by massaging his back, and as a reward, he will give you HM01, Cut. Do not look in his trash can.

Descend, exit the ship, and it will set sail immediately after you disembark.

Vermilion City: Cut HM and Vermilion Gym

Heal your Pokémon again. Teach Cut to a Pokémon. Head down to the Vermilion Gym, blocked by a small tree. Use Cut on the tree to access the Gym. Battle the junior trainers inside; they should be manageable.

The Vermilion Gym features a trash can puzzle.

Interact with the trash cans in the top left corner of the rectangle. If it says “only trash,” move one trash can to the right and interact with that one. Continue checking trash cans in order. Choose a direction (left, right, up, down) and when you find a switch, check the trash can in that direction. Repeat until you find the second switch, which will open the door to Lt. Surge. This puzzle is based on luck, not strategy.

Proceed to Lt. Surge’s room (heal Pokémon if needed). Save your game and speak to him.

Battle – Gym Leader Lt. Surge

Pokémon: Voltorb Lv. 21, Pikachu Lv. 18, Raichu Lv. 24

Lt. Surge’s Electric-type Pokémon can be challenging, especially for Flying-types. If you are having difficulty, go to Diglett’s Cave on Route 11 and catch a Diglett or Dugtrio. Ground-type Pokémon are immune to Electric attacks.

Defeating Lt. Surge earns you the Thunder Badge.

Heal your Pokémon. Professor Oak’s Aide will be standing to the right of Vermilion City’s entrance. He will mention another Aide waiting on Route 2. The path to Route 2 is through Diglett’s Cave.

Diglett’s Cave: Vermilion City to Route 2

Pokémon found: Diglett, Dugtrio

Diglett’s Cave connects Route 11 near Vermilion City to Route 2 near Viridian City. The music is Viridian Forest’s theme.

This cave is exclusively populated by Diglett and Dugtrio. They are relatively high-leveled, so be cautious. Dugtrio can be level 31.

Follow the linear path through the cave. Upon exiting, you will find a house. Inside, you can trade an Abra for a Mr. Mime with the kid holding the GBA.

Head down from the house and use Cut on the tree. Continue down and enter the gatehouse. Professor Oak’s other Aide will be there and give you HM05, Flash, if you have 10 Pokémon in your Pokédex. Flash is inaccurate, but Butterfree’s Compoundeyes ability increases accuracy. Pikachu and Meowth can also learn Flash.

Continue downwards, collect the Paralyze Heal, use Cut on a tree, and head down to Viridian City. Head left of the Pokémon Center, past the pond, use Cut on the tree, and inside is a Move Tutor who will teach Dream Eater. Return and use Cut again to get back to Diglett’s Cave and go through it back to Vermilion City.

Vermilion City: Route 9 and Rock Tunnel

Heal your Pokémon. Head out through Route 6 and the Underground Path to Cerulean City. Take the right turn just outside Cerulean City onto Route 9.

Route 9: Rock Tunnel Approach

Pokémon found: Spearow, Rattata, Ekans (FireRed only), Sandshrew (LeafGreen only)

Use Cut on the tree blocking your path and head right. Battle the Picnicker. Jump down the ledge and collect TM40, Aerial Ace. Battle the Hiker. Go right and up, battle the Camper. Up and left, battle the Bug Catcher (with two Beedrill). Head left; grass patches are present. This is your only route back to Cerulean City to heal, so clear it first.

Return right, past the Camper, take the lower right path, battle the Hiker and collect the Burn Heal. Return left and take the upper path this time. Go up when you reach a gap. Battle the Bug Catcher. Go left and battle the Camper. Another grass patch is there. Go right to the Bug Catcher again and turn up to battle the Hiker. Go right and jump down the ledge. Battle the Picnicker and head right.

Route 10: Rock Tunnel Entrance

Pokémon found: Ekans (FireRed only), Sandshrew (LeafGreen only), Spearow, Voltorb
