MapleStory Legion Guide: Unleash Your Account’s Power

MapleStory’s Legion system stands as a cornerstone of character progression, offering significant stat boosts and account-wide benefits by leveraging the diverse classes within the game. Every level achieved across your characters contributes to your Legion, creating a powerful synergy that enhances both new and established mains. This comprehensive guide will delve into the intricacies of the MapleStory Legion, covering its mechanics, member bonuses, and strategies for maximizing Legion Coin acquisition for valuable shop items.

For any dedicated MapleStory player, investing in the Legion system is paramount. The substantial stat enhancements it provides can propel your characters to new heights of power and efficiency, making it an indispensable part of your journey.

To understand where Legion progression fits into your overall character development, be sure to explore our MapleStory Progression Guide.

Important Update: A brand-new Legion Artifact system has been introduced in Patch 251, adding another layer of depth to Legion progression!

Understanding the MapleStory Legion System

The core concept of the Legion System in MapleStory is to reward players for exploring and leveling a variety of classes. With over 40 unique jobs and classes available, the Legion system encourages you to experience different playstyles and contribute to your account’s overall strength. It transforms each character into a building block for account-wide power.

The Legion system unlocks once your account reaches a cumulative total of 500 levels across all characters in the same world. Access the Legion UI conveniently through the Main Menu in any town. Upon opening, you’ll encounter a customizable grid – your Legion board – ready to be populated with characters.

For efficient leveling strategies to quickly boost your Legion characters, refer to our MapleStory Training Guide.

Your Legion Level is the sum of levels from your characters. It’s important to note that only the top 42 highest-level characters on your account contribute to your Legion Level. This encourages broad character development without requiring every single character to be max level.

Crucially, only characters level 60 and above count towards your Legion Level. This sets a clear starting point for characters to become Legion contributors.

Maximizing Grid Bonuses

Each character in your Legion is represented by a block on the Legion Grid. The number of character blocks you can place is determined by your Legion Rank. At the initial rank, you can strategically place up to 9 characters on your grid.

Placement starts with the central square, and blocks must be placed adjacently, extending outwards in any direction. Strategic placement is key to maximizing the bonuses.

Placing blocks on the grid grants two types of benefits: stat bonuses from the grid itself and a job-specific Legion Member Bonus. Higher level characters translate to larger blocks, providing greater stat bonuses.

Character block size and rank increase as they reach specific level milestones:

Character Rank Level Requirement Block Size
B Level 60 1 Block
A Level 100 2 Blocks
S Level 140 3 Blocks
SS Level 200 4 Blocks
SSS Level 250 5 Blocks

Many players prioritize reaching S rank (Level 140) for their Legion characters as an efficient initial goal. This unlocks the Level 2 Link Skill for that character and represents a balance between effort and reward. Leveling from 140 to 200 requires significantly more time. With modern MapleStory’s accelerated progression, reaching level 140 can be achieved relatively quickly.

The shape of each character’s block on the grid depends on their rank and job type. Consult external resources or in-game guides for specific block shapes to optimize your grid layouts.

Understanding Legion Raid Power

Beyond stat bonuses, the Legion system provides a passive income of Legion Coins. Legion Power is the key to earning these coins, and it’s directly influenced by the characters assigned to your Legion Grid.

Initially, Legion Power was determined by a character’s level and Starforce enhancement level (another equipment upgrade system).

However, with Patch 253’s update (Patch 253 Notes), Legion Power calculation shifted to a character’s combat power and level – essentially reflecting their damage output. This change encourages building stronger Legion characters.

Your Legion characters are constantly engaged in a background battle against a massive dragon (no player interaction needed). For every 100 billion damage dealt collectively, you earn Legion Coins. Stronger and more numerous characters on your grid lead to a higher damage output and thus more Legion Coins. See the Legion Coins section below for detailed earning information.

Advancing Through Legion Ranks

Your Legion Rank reflects your overall account progression and is determined by the total accumulated levels of all your characters.

You begin at Nameless Legion Rank I upon reaching 500 total levels and can initially assign 9 characters to your grid.

To increase your Legion Rank and unlock more grid space and member slots, you need to reach specific total level thresholds. Rank advancement requires Legion Coins and a conversation with the Dame Appropriation NPC, found in most major towns.

The following table outlines the progression through all Legion Ranks:

Legion Grid Stat Bonuses

Each square on the Legion Grid provides a specific stat bonus when covered by a character block. Some bonuses become available as you increase your Legion Rank, adding another layer of progression.

A single character block can occupy up to 5 grid squares at SSS rank (Level 250). The grid bonuses are categorized into Inner and Outer blocks:

Inner Grid Blocks (typically center of block placement):

  • STR (Strength)
  • MP (Maximum Mana Points)
  • DEX (Dexterity)
  • INT (Intelligence)
  • LUK (Luck)
  • ATT (Weapon Attack)
  • M.ATT (Magic Attack)
  • HP (Maximum Health Points)

Outer Grid Blocks (perimeter of block placement):

  • Critical Damage
  • Abnormal Status Resistance
  • Bonus EXP (Experience Points)
  • Critical Rate
  • Boss Damage
  • Knockback Resistance
  • Buff Duration
  • Ignore Defense

Legion Member Class Bonuses

In addition to grid bonuses, each character class provides a unique Legion Member Bonus when placed on the grid. This bonus scales with the character’s Legion Rank (B to SSS).

Earning and Utilizing Legion Coins

Legion Coins are the currency of the Legion system, earned by bolstering your Legion Power. As previously mentioned, Legion Power is derived from the combined levels and combat strength of your Legion characters.

You can view each character’s Legion Power contribution directly on their character card within the Legion grid interface.

Your accumulated Legion Power fuels the Legion Raid, a continuous battle against a colossal Dragon Boss. While you can manually enter the Legion Raid map, there’s no active participation required for coin generation. Your Legion characters automatically engage the dragon in the background, generating coins over time. Entering the Legion Raid map primarily serves to collect accumulated coins and complete daily Legion quests.

On average, approximately 1 Legion Coin is earned daily for every 1,100,000 Legion Raid Power. This ratio can fluctuate slightly.

Initially, earned Legion Coins are stored passively within your Legion storage. It’s essential to periodically collect these coins by entering the Legion Raid, as there’s a storage cap. Once the limit is reached, coin accumulation ceases until you collect them. Legion Coins are account-wide once collected, eliminating the need for inter-character transfers.

Further Legion Coin income can be gained by completing two daily quests from Dame Appropriation within the Legion Raid map:

  • Defeat 100 Welps (+10 Coins)
  • Defeat 20 Golden Wyverns (+20 Coins)
