MapleStory Progression Guide 2024: Leveling, Equipment, and More

This MapleStory Progression Guide is designed for all players navigating Maple World in 2024, whether you’re on Reboot (Heroic) or Regular (Interactive) Servers. We will outline the best-in-slot equipment to acquire, optimal times to enhance your Legion, and effective strategies for progressing through all phases of the game.

While the ultimate end-game progression is consistent across both Reboot and Regular servers, the paths to get there, particularly concerning early gear acquisition, will differ significantly.

For clarity, we’ve divided this guide into Early Game, Mid-Game, and End-Game phases, providing specific advice for both server types to ensure the most efficient progression.

Early-Game MapleStory Progression Guide

In this MapleStory progression guide, we define Early-Game as achieving the following milestones:

  • Main character: Level 235
  • Legion Level: 2000
  • Link Skills: 12

When you first embark on your MapleStory journey, focusing on these objectives is crucial for establishing a solid foundation for your account progression.

Reaching a MapleStory Legion level of 2,000 is essential as it unlocks a steady income of Legion Coins. This milestone should ideally coincide with unlocking the most impactful Link Skills for your chosen class.

Struggling to level up efficiently? Consult our comprehensive MapleStory Training Guide for the top training maps to maximize your EXP gains.

Achieving 2000 Legion Levels generally involves training approximately fifteen characters to Level 140.

MapleStory has significantly streamlined the leveling process in recent times. Frequent events like Tera Burning, generous Level Up Point distributions, and numerous events that provide substantial level boosts make reaching higher levels more accessible than ever.

Upon reaching Level 235, you unlock all of your Arcane Symbols. This is a pivotal moment, granting a massive surge in stats and damage output. Furthermore, it unlocks Arcane River Dailies, allowing you to earn daily EXP and steadily advance towards the highly anticipated Level 260 6th Job Advancement.

While completing all Arcane River Dailies demands defeating around 1,800 monsters, the resulting damage amplification makes it well worth the effort. Embrace the start of your Daily Story!

We recommend leveling characters to Level 140 initially because this allows them to occupy a respectable 2×2 Legion Block on the grid. The next significant Legion Block upgrade occurs at Level 200 (3×3).

Refer to our detailed Link Skill Guide to identify the most crucial Link Skills to prioritize early on in your progression. Link Skills become available at Level 70, Level 120, and occasionally Level 210. In the beginning, focus on acquiring Level 120 Link Skills unless you possess an abundance of Level Up Potions.

Early Game Equipment

Below is a list of essential equipment items to target during the Early Game phase of MapleStory progression. Reboot server players, restricted from trading, will experience a slightly slower equipment progression compared to Regular server players in the initial stages.

Joining an active guild can significantly expedite your early game progression. Guildmates can often carry you through stronger bosses, allowing you to loot superior equipment and transition into mid-game content more rapidly.

Pensalir Equipment

Acquiring Pensalir Equipment should be straightforward as it drops from virtually all monsters Level 130 and above. In Reboot World, equipment drops are also tailored to your job class, simplifying the acquisition of this 6-piece set.

Equipping the 6-piece Pensalir set grants a beneficial Set Bonus that enhances your overall damage output.

Regular Server players have the option to bypass Pensalir gear entirely and directly purchase the Chaos Root Abyss (CRA) set (detailed in the mid-game section) from the Auction House for a relatively small amount of mesos.

Secondary Weapon

You can purchase a Level 100 Secondary Weapon from the designated vendor located in Leafre. The cost is minimal, only 500k mesos.

Emblem

The Gold Knight Emblem stands as the best-in-slot option for this equipment slot and is obtained through a questline. Players with sufficient mesos can further enhance it by cubing for optimal stats.

Badge

The Crystal Ventus Badge is a drop from Easy/Normal Magnus. If you can secure carries for Magnus, obtaining this badge becomes considerably easier. It’s worth noting that this badge cannot be cubed or Star Forced, so it’s not a critical item to min-max at this stage.

Face and Eye Accessories

The Condensed Power Crystal and Aquatic Letter Eye Accessory are obtainable as drops from Normal Zakum. While they can sometimes be rare drops, consider running Zakum on your mules (alternate characters) and transferring the equipment to your main character via storage to improve your chances.

Shoulder Accessory

The Royal Black Metal Shoulder is acquired from Easy/Normal Magnus. If you find soloing Normal Magnus challenging at this early stage, an alternative is Oyamatsumi’s Epaulet, which drops from the Ranmaru boss.

Belt

Good belt options are limited in the early game. Aim for a Cracked Gollux Belt from Easy Gollux. If you can get carried through higher difficulty Gollux, a Superior Gollux Belt is a significant upgrade.

Earrings

Dea Sidus Earrings drop from Horntail, with a higher drop rate from Chaos Horntail.

Pendant Slots

MapleStory now provides two Pendant Slots. The primary slot should be filled with a Chaos Horntail Pendant, a relatively common drop from Chaos Horntail.

For the second slot, aim for either a Mechanator Pendant or a Dominator Pendant from Arkarium Boss. The Mechanator Pendant is a frequent drop, while the Dominator Pendant is considerably rarer (some players may not see one for months).

Alternatively, a Cracked/Solid Gollux Pendant can serve as a temporary placeholder.

Pocket Slot

Unlocking the Pocket Slot requires raising your Charm Level to Level 30. This is achieved by equipping items that grant charm, such as Zakum Helmets and Cash Shop equipment. Trait Boost Potions obtained from events can also instantly unlock the pocket slot.

The Stone of Eternal Life drops from Hilla. However, the long-term goal is to obtain the Pink Holy Cup from Pink Bean. Since Pink Bean might be too challenging to solo at this stage, the Stone of Eternal Life is a viable temporary option.

Pocket Slot items cannot be Star Forced or Potentialed.

Rings

MapleStory features four Ring Slots, but many desirable rings are locked behind harder bosses or events. In the early game, you might only realistically acquire one or two good rings.

The Silver Blossom Ring drops from Normal/Chaos Horntail. Upgrading its Potential to Legendary is a worthwhile investment, as accessory equipment can later be repurposed for Drop Rate or Meso Acquisition gear.

Event Rings are periodically available through Event Shops. Their availability depends on current in-game events.

Gollux Rings are stronger options but are generally considered mid-game targets.

Android Heart

The Android Heart slot is another equipment slot that is often event-dependent. The Lidium Heart is commonly available during events. A temporary, expiring Android Heart can be crafted in Ardentmill if needed.

Medal

A relatively easy-to-obtain medal is the World Tree Guardian Medal, earned by completing the Root Abyss Questline and defeating all normal Root Abyss bosses.

Familiar

While Familiars aren’t strictly necessary for early game progression, if you acquire some, aim to reveal the 15% Ignore Defense line for a significant damage boost.

Reboot World players do not have access to Familiar Cards through trading and must grind for them directly from monsters, which can be a lengthy process.

Totems

Permanent Totems in MapleStory are primarily obtained from the Afterlands Theme Dungeon.

Completing the Afterlands questline will reward you with four permanent totems, allowing you to equip up to three simultaneously.

Regular Server players can purchase permanent totems from the Auction House.

Temporary totems, lasting up to a month, are obtainable by completing Yu Garden quests.

Title

The best consistently available title is the Root Abyss Master Title. It provides the following beneficial stats:

All Stats: +8, Attack Power/Magic Attack power: +3, Boss Damage: +5%, Ignore Defense: +5%, MaxHP: +300, MaxMP: +300

To earn this title, you need to defeat Chaos Root Abyss bosses 20 times as part of a specific Root Abyss quest.

Event titles, such as Holy Pink Beanity, which is also permanent, are occasionally available during special events like the Pink Bean class event (typically occurring every other year).

Mid-Game MapleStory Progression Guide

Mid-game in MapleStory is defined by your ability to solo Weekly bosses up to Normal Lomien (Lotus/Damien) and Easy Lucid.

Your mid-game goals should encompass:

  • Main character: Level 260
  • Legion Level: 4000
  • Link Skills: All (Level 2/3)

Reaching Level 260 on your main character unlocks the MapleStory 6th Job advancement, granting a substantial damage increase and new skills.

Continue to develop your Legion to Level 4000. This unlocks crucial Legion Raid grid placements for Boss Damage and Critical Damage, further enhancing your combat prowess.

Upgrade any Link Skills that are not yet at Level 2. If possible, prioritize upgrading key damage-boosting Link Skills to Level 3 for maximum effectiveness.

Mid Game Equipment

Mid-game is the phase where you should aim to upgrade all your equipment to Legendary Potential and begin Star Forcing them to 17 stars or higher. This equipment set will likely serve you for an extended period as you progress toward the end-game and the more demanding challenges that await.

Chaos Root Abyss (CRA) Equipment

It’s time to acquire Chaos Root Abyss gear (CRA). CRA gear was once the undisputed best-in-slot for a considerable period. While it has been surpassed by Eternal gear in the very late game, CRA remains exceptionally strong for mid-game and beyond.

Your focus should now be on cubing your CRA gear to achieve 2 or 3 lines of your main stat and Star Forcing them to 17 stars.

Secondary Weapon Upgrade

A superior secondary weapon can be obtained from the Princess No boss. Defeating Princess No multiple times (around 3-4 kills) will yield enough materials to exchange for her signature secondary weapon.

While this secondary weapon is only marginally better than the Level 100 secondary, it represents a worthwhile upgrade. Some classes may opt for a Shield instead of a secondary weapon, depending on their specific needs and playstyle.

Face and Eye Accessory Enhancements

For the Face Accessory slot, transition to using the Twilight Mark, which drops from Normal Lucid / Normal Will. As you might not yet possess the damage to solo these bosses, joining a party is necessary to attempt obtaining this valuable drop.

An alternative face accessory is the Sweetwater Tattoo from Commerci. Commerci dailies provide a more accessible, albeit time-gated, path for players who are not yet ready for Lucid/Will parties.

For the Eye Accessory slot, the Sweetwater Monocle is a strong choice. If you are not engaged in Commerci dailies, the Black Bean Mark, which drops from Pink Bean, is a viable alternative.

For min-maxers, transposing the exceedingly rare Papulatus Mark (dropped by Chaos Papulatus) onto the Sweetwater Monocle provides enhanced stats and higher-tier potential. However, the Papulatus Mark’s extreme rarity makes it an unrealistic goal for most players.

Absolab Gear Acquisition

Your Shoes, Gloves, Cape, and Weapon should be upgraded to Absolab Gear.

In Reboot World, obtaining Absolab gear involves completing the time-consuming Absolab Dailies to accumulate enough coins to purchase the equipment. Additionally, defeating Lotus and Damien is required to acquire the necessary materials for exchanging the coins.

Despite the grind, many Reboot guilds offer carries for Lotus and Damien, making coin acquisition more manageable. Even with carries, obtaining a full set of Absolab gear will still typically take several weeks.

Regular Server players can readily purchase Absolab Gear from the Auction House at relatively low prices. Alternatively, saving up mesos to directly purchase Arcane Gear is also a viable strategy.

Superior Gollux Equipment Set

Your Pendant, Belt, Earrings, and one Ring slot should all be upgraded to Superior Gollux Equipment.

Unfortunately, acquiring Superior Gollux gear also entails a daily grind, requiring several months of coin accumulation (unless you are exceptionally fortunate with Gollux drops).

Despite the time investment, Superior Gollux gear is a long-term investment that you will use for a significant portion of your MapleStory journey, making the grind worthwhile.

Second Pendant Slot

For your second pendant slot, you can aim for a Dominator Pendant, a rare drop from Arkarium, or a Transposed Sweetwater Pendant (obtained through more Commerci dailies).

Equipping two Superior Gollux Pendants no longer contributes to the Gollux set effect, making the Dominator Pendant, with its boss flames, a superior choice for the second slot.

Regular Server players can consider purchasing a Daybreak Pendant for its contribution to the two-set Dawn Boss Set effect, which synergizes well with other mid-game accessories.

Pocket Slot Upgrade

Replace the Stone of Eternal Life in your Pocket Slot with the Pink Holy Cup, which drops from Pink Bean.

Ring Options

Mid-game offers a wider variety of ring options.

Consider acquiring the Kanna Treasure Ring (a rare drop from Princess No), the Dawn Guardian Angel Ring (from Guardian Angel Slime), and utilizing Reinforced/Superior Gollux Rings.

The Dawn Guardian Angel Ring and the Twilight Mark synergize to activate the beneficial 2-set Dawn Boss Set effect.

Remember that accessories can be repurposed for Item Drop Rate and Meso Acquisition sets later on, so ranking them up to Legendary Potential is never wasted effort.

Additional ring alternatives include the Solid Gollux Ring and the Meister Ring.

Android Heart Upgrade

The Fairy Heart is an event-exclusive Android Heart that is typically available during alternating events. It boasts a Level 120+ Potential tier, significantly superior to the Level 30 Lidium Heart.

The Wonderoid Heart is another powerful option, but the Wonderoid event has not been seen in MapleStory for several years, making it unobtainable for current players.

Medal Alternatives

The best medals to aim for at this stage are either the Antellion Guardian Medal or the Seven-Day Monster Parker Medal.

The Antellion Guardian Medal requires completing the lengthy Masteria Through Time questline. In contrast, the Seven-Day Monster Parker Medal requires completing Monster Park 77 times across seven consecutive days. Choose the medal grind that best suits your playstyle and time commitment.

End-Game MapleStory Progression Guide

End-game in MapleStory signifies the point where you are capable of challenging and defeating Black Mage monthly, alongside other formidable end-game bosses such as Seren, Kalos, and beyond.

Many end-game equipment pieces have extremely low drop rates. Even with vast mesos reserves, Reboot server players may spend months, if not years, actively farming for these elusive items.

Your end-game objectives should be:

  • Main character: Level 280
  • Legion Level: 7000
  • Link Skills: All (Level 3)

Reaching Level 280 fulfills the level requirements for engaging with all end-game bosses. By this stage, you should also be actively progressing your 6th Job Hexa Stats and Skills and striving to max out your Arcane and Grandis Symbols.

Aim for a Legion level of at least 7000, and ideally higher. End-game progression is heavily focused on min-maxing character stats to extract every last bit of damage potential.

End-Game Equipment

The Pitched Boss Set becomes a central focus in end-game equipment, replacing numerous mid-game items. However, their exceptionally low drop rates mean that you may find it more immediately beneficial to Star Force your existing mid-game equipment to 22 stars while patiently farming for Pitched Boss drops.

Eternal Equipment Set

Eternal Equipment pieces are obtained by defeating the formidable Kalos The Guardian boss. Successfully defeating Kalos necessitates a highly coordinated end-game party and a character build that is already near maximum potential.

In the interim, continue utilizing your CRA gear and upgrading it to 22 stars to maximize your damage output while progressing towards Eternal equipment.

Pitched Boss Set

The Pitched Boss Set represents the pinnacle of MapleStory equipment, replacing numerous slots previously occupied by mid-game gear. However, the drop rates for Pitched Boss Set items are notoriously low. Many players may endure months of farming without a single drop.

Prioritize maximizing your mid-game equipment to 22 stars while persistently attempting to acquire Pitched Boss Set pieces.

Arcane Equipment Transition

Begin replacing your Absolab Gear with Arcane Gear, which is obtained from defeating Lucid. Arcane gear is relatively more accessible than Pitched Boss or Eternal gear. Prioritizing Star Forcing your Arcane equipment to 22 stars should be a high priority as soon as you acquire it.

The Arcane Weapon can also serve as a strong weapon option while you undertake the lengthy Genesis Weapon Liberation process, which requires defeating Black Mage over an eight-month period.

Pendant Upgrade

Hard Versus Hilla drops the Source of Suffering Pendant, which is considered best-in-slot for this equipment slot.

Replace your second pendant slot with the Daybreak Pendant, which drops from both Versus Hilla and Chosen Seren bosses, providing valuable set effects in combination with other Dawn set accessories.

Pocket Slot Endgame

Continue using the Pink Holy Cup until you manage to acquire a Cursed Spellbook from Hard Will, the ultimate Pocket Slot item.

Android Heart Endgame

The Black Heart can be crafted by trading materials obtained in the Haven area, dropped by Lotus and Damien. However, the Black Heart is temporary, lasting only 20 days, making its continuous upkeep inconvenient. Therefore, the Fairy Heart often remains the preferred permanent Android Heart option.

Potential Lines Aim

When cubing your equipment, your primary goal is to roll Potential lines that enhance your character’s main stat. For example, for a Hero class, you would prioritize Strength (%STR) lines.

Different equipment slots can roll different Potential lines. The table below outlines the ideal Potential lines to aim for on each equipment slot for optimal damage progression.

In Regular Servers, cubing resources are more limited unless you invest real currency. Begin by aiming for Epic Potential with 9% Main Stat lines, then progress to Unique Potential and 15% Main Stat. Cubes can be obtained through daily bossing on multiple characters, but it requires significant effort and time investment.

Equipment Slot Potential Aim Perfect Potential
HAT, TOP, BOTTOM, SHOE, CAPE, SHOULDER, BELT All Stat % Main Stat % Main Stat % x3
GLOVES Critical Damage % Main Stat % Critical Damage % x3
WEAPON, SECONDARY, EMBLEM ATT % Boss Damage % Ignore Defense % ATT% x3, Boss Damage % x3
FACE ACC, EYE ACC, EARRINGS, RINGS, PENDANT All Stat % Main Stat % Main Stat % x3

Flaming Gear for Bonus Stats

Flaming is another crucial method for upgrading your equipment. Flames add bonus stats to a piece of equipment, which can be rerolled using Rebirth Flames.

Normal Equipment (dropped by regular monsters) can gain 1-4 random lines of bonus stats, while Bossing Equipment (dropped by bosses) is guaranteed to receive 4 lines of random bonus stats.

Each bonus stat line assigned by a Flame has a Tier, ranging from Tier 1 to Tier 7. For instance, a Tier 2 additional Strength (STR) line might grant +10-20 STR, whereas a Tier 7 line could provide +100 STR.

Bonus stats from Flames are displayed in green on your equipment.

Flame Type Normal Equipment Bossing Equipment
Powerful Rebirth Flame Tiers 1-4 Tiers 3-6
Eternal Rebirth Flame Tiers 2-5 Tiers 4-7
Black Eternal Rebirth Flame Tiers 2-5 Tiers 4-7

Eternal Rebirth Flames offer the highest potential bonus stats for flaming your gear, capable of reaching Tier 7 on Bossing Equipment.

Rebirth Flames are obtained as drops from bosses and are frequently distributed during in-game events.

Black Eternal Rebirth Flames allow you to reroll bonus stats while providing the option to retain the previous bonus stats if the new rolls are less desirable, offering greater control over the flaming process.

Certain equipment slots cannot gain bonus stats from Flames: Emblem, Badge, Medal, Secondary Weapon, Shoulder Accessory, Rings.

Spell Tracing Equipment

Spell Tracing replaced the older Scroll system in MapleStory.

Instead of using individual Scroll items, you now use Spell Traces, a common ETC drop from virtually every monster and boss in the game, to enhance your equipment.

Through the Equipment Enchant window, you can use Spell Traces to “scroll” your equipment. Each equipment piece has a limited number of upgrade slots, and each Spell Trace Scroll has a specific success rate.

For general progression, the recommended Spell Trace Scroll types are:

  • 70% Scrolls: Ideal for players with limited mesos.
  • 30% Scrolls (Armor): A balanced option for armor enhancements.
  • 15% Scrolls (Weapons): Best for weapon scrolling, offering higher stat gains but lower success rates.

Clean Slate Scrolls can be used to reset upgrade slots if you experience excessive failures. Also, watch for Spell Trace Fever Time Events, which significantly increase the success rates of Spell Trace upgrades during specific periods.

Star Forcing Equipment Enhancements

Star Forcing allows you to further enhance your equipment by adding “stars,” each star increasing the equipment’s base stats by a predetermined amount.

With each successful Star Force enhancement, the meso cost increases, and the success rate decreases.

Upon reaching 12 stars, there is a chance that your item can “boom,” resulting in its destruction. A boomed item transforms into a “trace of time” version. This trace can be restored to a new, clean version of the same item using the Equipment Transfer feature.

Equipment Transfer restores the trace item to a new base item, starting it at 12 Star Force and retaining the potential of the trace item (up to Unique Potential).

The Star Force success, failure, and destruction chances are detailed below:

Star Force Level Success Chance Failure Chance (Item Kept) Item Destruction Chance
0 95% 5% 0%
1 90% 10% 0%
2 85% 15% 0%

Reboot vs. Regular Servers: Which is Best for Progression?

The consensus among most players is that Reboot servers offer a more streamlined and generally easier progression experience. However, experienced MapleStory players can also progress rapidly on Regular Servers, even without significant financial investment, by leveraging the Auction House for buying and selling items.

Reboot progression is often characterized by a greater emphasis on grinding and daily content, with more dailies required to acquire essential equipment. Regular Servers offer the option to bypass some of these grindy aspects by purchasing equipment directly from the Auction House. Conversely, Reboot players often find cubing and Star Forcing gear more readily accessible due to the higher meso availability within the Reboot economy.

For a more detailed comparison, refer to our Reboot Server Guide.

MapleStory Legacy Items

MapleStory has been live for over two decades, and over this long history, numerous items have been removed from the game entirely or made unobtainable through the removal of their acquisition methods.

These Legacy Items are often quite powerful and highly sought after by collectors and min-maxers, but unfortunately, they are no longer obtainable for new players.
