Why Train Magic in OSRS?

Why dedicate your time to training Magic in OSRS? Magic is not just another skill; it’s a cornerstone of your account progression. Leveling up Magic unlocks a spectrum of powerful combat spells, invaluable teleportation options, and a variety of utility spells that enhance your gameplay in countless ways.

Many formidable bosses in Old School RuneScape exhibit a weakness to magic attacks. Creatures like Kraken and Zulrah are particularly vulnerable, making magic essential for tackling high-level Player vs Monster (PvM) content and end-game challenges.

Magic also boasts significant potential in Player vs Player (PvP) combat. Spells such as Fire Surge and Ice Barrage are incredibly powerful tools for player-killing scenarios.

Furthermore, a magic level is a prerequisite for 18 quests in OSRS. Many of these quests are essential for account progression, including iconic adventures like Legends’ Quest and Dragon Slayer II.

To achieve the Quest Cape, a symbol of a dedicated quester, you’ll need level 75 Magic. For the prestigious Achievement Diary Cape, level 96 Magic is required, demonstrating the skill’s importance in completing RuneScape’s diverse content.

Reaching level 99 Magic unlocks the Magic Skillcape, which offers a unique and highly practical perk. Five times per day, you can switch your spellbook simply by wearing the cape, adding immense flexibility to your gameplay.

Understanding How Magic Works in OSRS

Magic experience in OSRS is primarily gained by casting spells, which necessitate the use of runes. Magic is renowned as a relatively fast skill to train to 99, with top-tier methods reaching experience rates exceeding 500,000 XP per hour. The diversity of training methods available makes the journey to 99 Magic engaging and less monotonous compared to other skills.

Furthermore, training Magic doesn’t have to break the bank. As highlighted in the “Fast & Cheap Pathway” detailed in this guide, achieving level 99 Magic is attainable in approximately 45 hours with a reasonable cost of around 35 million gold.

OSRS features various categories of magic spells, each serving different purposes:

  • Combat Spells: Used to inflict damage on enemies and weaken their defenses.

  • Teleport Spells: Grant quick access to various locations across RuneScape, saving valuable travel time.

  • Utility Spells: Encompass a range of spells like enchanting jewelry or alchemy, offering diverse benefits beyond combat.

Increasing your Magic level enhances your Magic Accuracy, allowing your spells to hit more consistently. It also unlocks more potent spells with higher maximum damage potential. Crucially, your Magic level significantly contributes to your Magical Defence, accounting for 70% of your ability to resist magical attacks.

Key Magic Unlocks in OSRS

Old School RuneScape features four distinct spellbooks, each offering a unique collection of spells. Understanding these spellbooks is crucial for effective OSRS magic training.

  • Standard Spellbook: Available to all accounts from the start, the Standard Spellbook is a versatile collection of combat, utility, and teleport spells, forming the foundation of any mage’s arsenal.

  • Ancient Spellbook: Unlocked after completing the Desert Treasure quest, the Ancient Spellbook is renowned for its powerful combat spells, including the multi-target “Barrage” spells, and useful teleports, making it a favorite for both PvM and PvP.

  • Lunar Spellbook: Accessible after Lunar Diplomacy, the Lunar Spellbook primarily focuses on utility spells, offering a wide array of support and skilling enhancements. Completing Dream Mentor unlocks 7 additional spells, and the Hard Fremennik Diary adds 2 more, further expanding its utility.

  • Arceuus Spellbook: The Arceuus Spellbook unlocks after reaching 60% Arceuus House Favour. It features a mix of combat and utility spells, with a focus on necromancy and dark magic. Completing the A Kingdom Divided quest grants access to 24 new spells, fully unlocking its potential.

Beyond spellbooks, certain quest completions are vital for unlocking efficient OSRS magic training methods. Completing Monkey Madness 1 and Monkey Madness 2 unlocks bursting locations, which are essential for fast magic XP gains.

Bursting, utilizing spells that hit multiple targets, is among the fastest magic training methods in OSRS. If you aim for quicker pathways to 99 Magic, completing at least Monkey Madness 1 is highly recommended. Monkey Madness 2 unlocks superior bursting locations with even better XP rates, making it the preferred choice if you meet the requirements.

Questing for Magic XP in OSRS

For players starting a fresh account, questing provides a significant boost to early Magic levels. The Imp Catcher and Witch’s Potion quests are particularly noteworthy, offering a swift path from level 1 to 10 Magic in a short amount of time.

Numerous other quests reward Magic XP. Focusing on quests with low entry requirements can significantly accelerate your progress through the initial magic levels. If your long-term goal includes obtaining the Quest Cape, completing these quests early on is a wise strategy to streamline your OSRS magic training journey.

Optimal Pathways to 99 Magic in OSRS

This OSRS magic guide will outline several pathways to achieving level 99 Magic, catering to different playstyles and priorities:

  • Fastest Pathway: Achieves 99 Magic in approximately 27 hours but is the most expensive, costing around 102 million gold.
  • Fast and Cheap Pathway: Balances speed and cost, taking about 45 hours and costing approximately 35 million gold.
  • AFK Pathway: Offers a more relaxed training experience, requiring around 103 hours to reach 99 with a cost of approximately 19 million gold.
  • Profitable Pathway: Allows you to gain 99 Magic in about 92 hours while generating a profit of roughly 86 million gold.
  • Free-to-Play (F2P) Pathways: Provides effective training methods for players without membership.

The Fastest OSRS Magic Training Pathway

The fastest OSRS magic training method prioritizes experience per hour above all else, making it the quickest route to 99 Magic, albeit at a significant cost.

This pathway starts with questing to level 10. From level 10 to 99 Magic, the primary method is enchanting bolts, progressing from sapphire bolts to onyx bolts. This method can yield over 500,000 XP per hour, making it exceptionally fast.

Begin by completing the Imp Catcher and Witch’s Potion quests to quickly reach level 10 Magic. These quests are straightforward and require minimal preparation, setting you up for bolt enchanting.

Enchanting bolts requires Cosmic runes, unenchanted gem-tipped bolts, and additional runes depending on the type of bolt you are enchanting.

At level 10 Magic, start by enchanting sapphire bolts, which provide approximately 100,000 XP per hour. To maximize XP rates with bolt enchanting, utilize the 1-tick method. This technique involves holding down the spacebar and clicking the enchant bolt spell every game tick (0.6 seconds).

To simplify 1-tick enchanting, the Runelite client offers a metronome plugin. This plugin emits a sound with each game tick, helping you maintain the rhythm for optimal speed.

Progress to emerald bolts at level 27, which are twice as fast as sapphire bolts. Continue upgrading to higher-tier bolts as your level increases, culminating in onyx bolts, which offer over 500,000 XP per hour.

In total, reaching level 99 Magic through this pathway takes approximately 27 hours. However, it’s important to note that this method is exceptionally expensive and click-intensive. Despite the drawbacks, it remains a valuable option for swiftly overcoming the slower early levels of Magic training.

Fast & Affordable OSRS Magic Training Pathway

The Fast and Cheap OSRS Magic Training pathway strikes a balance between speed and cost-effectiveness. While still click-intensive, it is less demanding than the fastest method and significantly more economical.

This pathway involves questing initially, transitioning to enchanting jewelry, and finally utilizing bursting for efficient training until level 99 Magic.

As with the fastest pathway, begin by completing Imp Catcher and Witch’s Potion to quickly reach level 10 Magic from level 1.

From level 10, start enchanting sapphire jewelry. Enchanting sapphire rings is recommended for maximizing profit during these early levels, although the profit margins are minimal.

There are two approaches to enchanting jewelry: AFK auto-casting and manual casting. Manual casting, clicking the spell for each enchantment, is more than twice as fast as auto-casting, significantly increasing your XP rates.

Enchant sapphire rings until level 27, then switch to enchanting emerald jewelry. Again, rings are the most profitable option, though profits remain small.

At level 49, transition to enchanting ruby items. Ruby amulets enchanted into amulets of strength are recommended for the best balance of XP and cost.

Continue enchanting ruby amulets until level 57, where you can begin enchanting diamond jewelry. Diamond necklaces are recommended for maximum profit. Enchanting diamond jewelry will be your method from level 57 to 62, yielding around 110,000 XP per hour.

For slightly faster training from level 55 onwards, consider Tele-Alching. This involves alternating between High Alchemy and teleporting to the same location, ideally Camelot. Tele-Alching can achieve up to 140,000 XP per hour and provides a viable alternative to jewelry enchanting.

Upon reaching level 62 Magic and completing Desert Treasure, you unlock Smoke Burst, the first multi-target spell available. Progress to Ice Burst for even better XP rates.

At higher levels, Barrage spells become available, offering even greater XP per hour but at a higher rune cost. Ice Burst provides a good balance between speed and expense for the majority of training from level 62 to 99.

There are four primary locations recommended for Bursting and Barraging:

  1. Monkey Madness 1 Caves: Stack Skeletal Monkeys for decent XP rates.

  2. Monkey Madness 2 Caves: Offer approximately 30% higher XP rates compared to Monkey Madness 1 caves due to a greater monster density. Utilize the Bonecrusher and Dragonbone necklace for unlimited prayer points during training.

  3. Dust Devils in Catacombs of Kourend: Requires 65 Slayer. Bursting Dust Devils in the Catacombs is more cost-effective due to valuable drops, although XP rates are slightly lower due to fewer monsters.

  4. Nechryaels in Catacombs of Kourend: Requires 80 Slayer. Bursting Nechryaels in the Catacombs is even more cost-effective than Dust Devils due to their higher-value drops.

For Bursting, prioritize magic damage bonus and prayer bonus over magic attack bonus. Enemies in bursting locations have low magic defense, making magic attack bonus less impactful. Virtus armor offers the highest damage bonus for Ancient Magics, followed by Ancestral armor. Ahrims and Mystic armor are less optimal for bursting due to their lower damage bonuses.

Always equip an Occult Necklace for its magic damage bonus. If budget allows, a Tormented Bracelet further enhances damage output.

Weapon choices include the Ancient Staff as a budget-friendly option and the Ancient Sceptre, obtainable from the Muspah boss, as a superior alternative.

Bursting at Maniacal Monkeys yields the highest XP rates, reaching up to 350,000 XP per hour. Dust Devils and Nechryaels offer slower XP but are more cost-effective.

An alternative to Bursting is Stun-Alching, which can achieve up to 180,000 XP per hour, though it is very click-intensive. Stun-Alching involves wearing armor with a negative magic attack bonus (-65) to ensure stuns always splash on the target.

Continuously cast Stun and High Alchemy on an enemy. Skeletons near the wilderness ditch are a popular location for Stun-Alching, though any low-level monster can be used.

The Fast and Cheap Pathway, utilizing Maniacal Monkeys for bursting, takes approximately 45 hours to reach level 99 Magic and costs around 35 million gold.

AFK OSRS Magic Training Pathway

For players seeking a more relaxed approach, the AFK OSRS Magic Training pathway offers methods that require less constant attention.

The primary AFK training methods involve casting String Jewellery or Plank Make spells.

For early magic levels, casting Strike spells, up to Fire Strike, on crabs is a viable AFK option, allowing for approximately 10 minutes of AFK time. Bolt spells can be used for faster XP if budget allows, but Strike spells are still reasonably efficient. Training on crabs with strike spells nearly doubles the XP rates compared to splashing.

At level 65 Magic and after completing Lunar Diplomacy, the Bake Pie spell becomes available. This spell offers 50 seconds of AFK time per cast and yields up to 110,000 XP per hour. Bake Pie is also an excellent method for training Cooking simultaneously.

At level 80 Magic and with Lunar Diplomacy completed, you can cast String Jewellery. This spell also has a 50-second AFK duration but offers faster XP rates, up to 150,000 XP per hour, making it the fastest AFK magic training method.

At level 86 Magic, with Lunar Diplomacy and Dream Mentor completed, Plank Make spell becomes available. Plank Make has a 90-second AFK time and is highly profitable. Making Mahogany Planks yields the highest profit, up to 400,000 GP per hour, while providing 90,000 Magic XP per hour.

Overall, using String Jewellery to level 99 Magic takes approximately 103 hours. Using Plank Make from level 86 to 99 Magic takes around 119 hours.

Profitable OSRS Magic Training Pathway

The Profitable OSRS Magic Training pathway focuses on methods that generate gold while training the Magic skill.

This pathway primarily utilizes jewelry enchanting, but also includes the Tan Leather spell and High Alchemy for profitable training.

Start with questing from level 1 to 10, as it remains the most efficient method for early levels even in the profitable pathway.

Upon reaching level 10, begin enchanting sapphire rings, earning approximately 28,000 XP per hour while generating a small profit.

Progress through emerald jewelry at level 27, ruby jewelry at level 49, diamond jewelry at level 57, and dragonstone jewelry at level 68. Dragonstone enchanting can be continued to level 99 Magic and is decently profitable, particularly enchanting dragonstone rings, although it requires a significant upfront investment to purchase supplies.

At level 78 Magic, with Lunar Diplomacy and Hard Fremennik Diaries completed, the Tan Leather spell becomes available. Tanning black dragonhide is the most profitable option, netting over 1 million GP per hour while providing 130,000 Magic XP per hour.

Lastly, consider High Alchemy for profitable magic training. High Alchemy can be highly profitable if you select the right items to alchemize.

Two methods for acquiring alchable items are recommended:

  1. Join the “W308 anvil” clan chat as a guest to purchase alchables at prices lower than the Grand Exchange market price.

  2. Utilize an alchemy calculator website, which automatically identifies the most profitable items to alchemize based on current Grand Exchange prices.

High Alchemy yields approximately 75,000 XP per hour with continuous casting. However, High Alchemy is most effective when performed concurrently with training another skill, such as alching while training Agility, to passively train Magic.

The Profitable Pathway allows you to achieve level 99 Magic in approximately 92 hours while generating a profit of around 86 million gold.

Free-to-Play (F2P) OSRS Magic Training Pathways

For Free-to-Play (F2P) players, efficient OSRS magic training is still achievable.

In F2P, you can still complete the Imp Catcher and Witch’s Potion quests for a fast start to your magic journey.

With mind runes being inexpensive in F2P, training on low-level monsters like goblins or cows using strike spells is a viable early method.

Safe spotting is also a common F2P training technique. Safe spot moss giants or ogress warriors; their drops can offset the cost of runes used during training, making it sustainable.

The Fastest F2P Magic Training Pathway is outlined below:

Start with questing until level 10. From level 10, begin enchanting sapphire amulets. Rings are not available for enchanting in F2P, making amulets the only option.

At level 27, switch to enchanting defence amulets, then strength amulets at level 49 until level 55. At level 55, Tele-Alch Falador unlocks as the fastest F2P magic training method. Alternatively, at level 57, diamond amulets can be enchanted for slightly slower XP rates but potentially more profit depending on market prices.

Tele-Alch Falador is highly click-intensive but not significantly more so than jewelry enchanting, making it the top choice for maximizing magic XP in F2P.

If your goal is the Fastest 99 Magic in Free-to-Play, Tele-Alch Falador is your optimal strategy.

Ironman OSRS Magic Training Tips

Before concluding this OSRS magic guide, let’s briefly discuss Ironman Magic Training.

As an Ironman, your magic experience will naturally accumulate through various activities, including alching, bursting during Slayer, and combat during bossing encounters.

Early Ironman training can effectively utilize Fire Strike, as mind runes are readily available from rune stores.

Ironman accounts should take advantage of various rune shops across RuneScape to maintain rune supplies.

Regular rune shops can be found in Varrock, Port Sarim, and at Pest Control.

The Mage Arena in the Wilderness offers a store selling Law, Nature, and Cosmic runes.

After completing The Feud quest, Law, Nature, and Cosmic runes can be purchased from Al-Kharid.

The Wizard’s Guild in Yanille provides a range of runes, accessible with 66 Magic.

Baba Yaga on Lunar Isle sells Astral runes, essential for Lunar spells.

Ironman accounts can generally follow the regular training pathways outlined in this guide. However, Ironmen often find themselves utilizing utility spells like Superheat, Superglass Make, or Plank Make more frequently due to the self-sufficient nature of the game mode.

That concludes this comprehensive Level 1 to 99 OSRS Magic Guide.
