What We Do: Nurturing Potential from Puppyhood
The heart of Southeastern Guide Dogs lies in its meticulous puppy raising program. Dedicated volunteers, like those in the Houston Chapter, play a vital role in the early development of these exceptional dogs. From approximately eight weeks old to about a year, puppies are lovingly raised and taught essential commands, guided by experienced area coordinators, online resources, and a supportive community of fellow raisers. This crucial socialization and foundational training period prepares the young dogs for their advanced studies at the main campus in Palmetto, Florida.
Upon returning to Southeastern Guide Dogs Florida, the now-adolescent dogs undergo comprehensive evaluation by professional trainers. This assessment determines their aptitude for specific careers, whether as guide dogs for the visually impaired, service dogs for veterans, or therapy dogs. Following several more months of specialized training tailored to their designated role, these exceptional canines are carefully matched with their “forever person.” This pivotal moment marks the beginning of a life-changing partnership, as the dogs embark on their careers, providing invaluable assistance, companionship, and unwavering support to those in need. Southeastern Guide Dogs Florida not only trains dogs; they cultivate partnerships that transform lives.
