Temple of Slaughter Guide: Conquer Rex Chimaerus and Mini-Bosses

The Temple of Slaughter presents a challenging dungeon experience, echoing the mechanics found in the Temple of Roar level 30 dungeon. If you’re familiar with that earlier instance, many of the attack patterns and strategies here will feel similar, offering a familiar yet more intense challenge. This guide will walk you through the Temple of Slaughter, providing insights into speed run tactics, boss lore, and detailed strategies for defeating Rex Chimaerus and the formidable mini-bosses that stand in your way.

Speed Run Tactics for Temple of Slaughter

For those looking to efficiently clear the Temple of Slaughter, a speed run approach can save valuable time. The primary area for mob skipping lies between the first and second boss encounters. Employing tactics similar to those used in Cursed Wasteland or Butcher’s Canyon, the tank can strategically aggro mobs, drawing them away from the main path. This allows the rest of the party to bypass unnecessary combat and focus on the essential boss encounters. To progress to the final boss, defeating the second boss is mandatory, making it a key objective in any speed run strategy.

Delving into the Lore of Temple of Slaughter

The Temple of Slaughter holds a dark history, rooted in forbidden experiments conducted by the Sylavean Order. Ahzreil, an Elder within the Order, ultimately intervened, halting these unethical practices and sealing the monstrous creations within the temple. Abandoned and isolated, these creatures turned on each other in a desperate fight for survival. Emerging victorious from this gruesome internal conflict was King Chimaerus. Shadowmancer records hint at a terrifying potential: should King Chimaerus absorb sufficient mana, it could undergo a further transformation, evolving into the even more formidable Rex Chimaerus. This lore sets the stage for the intense boss encounter that awaits within the temple’s depths.

Rex Chimaerus Boss Fight Strategy

The climactic encounter of the Temple of Slaughter is against Rex Chimaerus. Strategic positioning is crucial right from the start. Assign four players to each of the four statues located around the arena, and designate one player to manage the chandelier positioned in the center.

Rex Chimaerus Attack Pattern:

Tail Poison → Slash + Tail Swipe → Tail Poison → Fury Attack → Fireball Mech → Tail Poison → Slash + Tail Swipe → Frenzy

Detailed Breakdown of Rex Chimaerus’s Abilities:

  • Fireball Mechanic: Rex Chimaerus initiates this mechanic by targeting a player with a single poison marker. Shortly after, three poison puddles erupt beneath three random players. The marked player will soon become paralyzed, significantly increasing their vulnerability to the incoming Fireball attacks, taking double damage. Furthermore, paralyzed players will explode upon death, posing a threat to nearby allies. The Purifying Touch ability can cleanse this paralysis effect. Following the paralysis, Rex Chimaerus unleashes three fireballs at the marked player. During each fireball cast, the boss will spray poison from its tail, targeting either its left or right side.

  • Frenzy: Rex Chimaerus enters a Frenzy state, increasing its attack speed and damage output, requiring heightened awareness and swift reactions from the party.

Rex Chimaerus Strategy Guide:

  1. Marker Player Positioning: The player afflicted with the poison marker must immediately move as far away as possible, ideally in the direction of the tank. This creates distance from other players and sets up the tank to mitigate the fireball damage.

  2. Tanking Fireballs: The tank should position themselves to intercept the fireballs aimed at the marked player. With proper buffs and healing support, a well-geared tank should be able to withstand 2-3 fireball hits. If survivability is a concern, other players can line up behind the tank to distribute the damage, but stacking directly is not advised due to the poison puddles.

  3. Blessed Barrier Support: Wand users can proactively cast Blessed Barrier on the player designated to tank the fireballs. Depending on gear level and buff strength, Blessed Barrier can potentially mitigate all three fireballs, significantly enhancing survivability.

  4. Dagger Offhand Tanking Technique: Tanks wielding a dagger offhand can utilize Shadow Step to quickly reposition behind Rex Chimaerus. This allows the marked player to consistently stand in line with the tank, simplifying positioning and damage mitigation for the Fireball mechanic.

Chandelier and Statue Telegraph Mechanic:

Telegraph: A distinct voice line in an unknown language signals the start of this mechanic.

Mechanic Execution:

  1. Blue pitons will materialize in the air. One designated player must utilize these pitons, first using the lower one and then the higher one, to ascend to the chandelier directly above Rex Chimaerus. Upon reaching the chandelier, this player must interact with the lever.

  2. Activating the lever on the chandelier will unlock the latches positioned in front of the four statues around the arena. Simultaneously, four other designated players must grapple and disable these latches.

  3. Failure to complete this mechanic within a limited timeframe will result in a wipe, eliminating all players. Swift coordination and execution are paramount to successfully overcoming this challenge.

Temple of Slaughter Mini-Boss Encounters

The Temple of Slaughter is guarded by challenging mini-bosses, each requiring specific strategies to overcome.

Ancient Berserk Dark Enforcer Mini-Boss Guide

The first mini-boss encountered in the Temple of Slaughter, the Ancient Berserk Dark Enforcer, features a straightforward yet potent mechanic.

Ignite Mechanic:

Description: This mini-boss periodically applies a stacking burn debuff, Ignite, to players. This debuff lasts for 20 seconds and stacks in intensity over time. If left unchecked, the stacking burn damage can quickly overwhelm healers.

Strategy: To mitigate the Ignite debuff, players should utilize the water pools present in the arena. Entering the water will significantly reduce the duration of the burn debuff, allowing healers to effectively manage incoming damage. Strategic use of the water is key to surviving this encounter.

Ancient Berserk Shade Wizard Mini-Boss Guide

The Ancient Berserk Shade Wizard presents a more complex challenge, centered around summoned adds and disruptive crowd control.

Mechanic: Fury Attack and Zombie Dogs

Telegraph: The Shade Wizard announces its Fury Attack with the voice line: “Suffer endlessly!”

Mechanic Breakdown:

  1. Voice Line Cue: The “Suffer endlessly!” voice line serves as the telegraph for the Shade Wizard’s Fury Attack sequence.

  2. First Fury Attack (Blockable): Immediately after the voice line, the Shade Wizard will unleash a Fury Attack. Players must block this initial Fury Attack to avoid its effects.

  3. Puddle Summons: Following the first Fury Attack, the Shade Wizard summons damaging puddles beneath player locations. Players must quickly move to avoid standing in these puddles.

  4. Second Fury Attack (Blockable): The Shade Wizard follows up with a second Fury Attack. This attack must also be blocked to prevent negative effects.

Strategy: Blocking both Fury Attacks is crucial for maximizing uptime and minimizing disruption. While the Shade Wizard summons Zombie Dogs who inflict fear with their Fury Attacks, these adds continuously respawn. Therefore, focusing on eliminating the Zombie Dogs is ineffective. Instead, concentrate damage on the Shade Wizard while effectively managing the Fury Attacks and puddle mechanics. Notably, the Shade Wizard can be stunned immediately after the “Suffer endlessly!” voice line. Stunning at this point can completely interrupt the Fury Attack sequence, preventing both the attacks and the puddle summons, providing a significant advantage in the fight.
