Leveling your Alchemy profession in The War Within (TWW) expansion? This comprehensive TWW Alchemy leveling guide provides the fastest and most cost-effective method to boost your Khaz Algar Alchemy skill from 1 to 100. Whether you’re a seasoned alchemist or just starting, this guide will walk you through every step to maximize your leveling efficiency.
For the best experience, pair Alchemy with Herbalism. Leveling these two professions in tandem allows you to gather your own herbs, significantly reducing the gold cost. If you’re also interested in Herbalism, be sure to check out our War Within Herbalism leveling guide. If Herbalism isn’t your choice, ensure you have sufficient gold to purchase the necessary herbs, as they are required in substantial quantities for efficient Alchemy leveling.
Finding Your Alchemy Trainer and Crafting Station in TWW
To begin your Alchemy journey in The War Within, you’ll need to locate the Alchemy trainer in Dornogal. This trainer will teach you the Khaz Algar Alchemy skill, enabling you to start crafting.
Most Alchemy recipes in The War Within require an Alchemist’s Lab Bench, a specialized crafting station. Conveniently, you can find the Alchemist’s Lab Bench located right next to the Alchemy trainer in Dornogal, making it easy to learn and craft in one central location.
Essential Shopping List for Early Alchemy Leveling
Before you dive into Alchemy crafting, gather these materials to efficiently reach approximately skill level 30. The requirements beyond level 30 are variable depending on your discoveries and chosen path. Remember, material quality is not a factor in leveling speed – prioritize the most affordable options available.
- Mycobloom: Large quantity (stock up as you’ll need a lot)
- Gilded Vial: Around 50-100 (easily purchased from the Alchemy vendor)
Step-by-Step Guide to Leveling Khaz Algar Alchemy
Racial Bonuses: Goblin characters benefit from a +5 Alchemy skill boost due to their Better Living Through Chemistry racial passive. Kul Tiran characters have a +2 bonus from Jack of All Trades.
These bonus Alchemy skill points are advantageous because they extend the duration for which recipes remain orange, granting skill points for a longer period. This can potentially save you gold by allowing you to gain skill points from lower-level recipes for longer.
Leveling Alchemy from 1 to 30: The Initial Steps
Follow these steps to quickly reach Alchemy skill level 30 and discover some fundamental Alchemy recipes along the way.
The Gilded Vial is readily available from the Alchemy supply vendor near your trainer. If you require higher quality vials, you can find them at the Auction House.
1. Crafting Coreway Catalyst
- Craft 10x Algari Healing Potion using 60x Mycobloom and 50x Gilded Vial.
- Utilize Algari Healing Potion you just crafted to obtain Coreway Catalyst. This catalyst is essential for experimentation and further recipe discovery.
If you need more Coreway Catalyst, craft additional Healing Potions or consider purchasing them from the Auction House if they are more economically priced. Alternatively, check the price of Cavedweller’s Delight at the Auction House; buying these might be cheaper than crafting Healing Potions (crafting Cavedweller’s Delight for catalyst is not recommended).
2. Discovering Basic Potion Recipes through Experimentation
Experiment with herbs using Wild Experimentation to discover basic potion recipes. Using Wild Experimentation on the herbs listed below for the first time will teach you the basic Alchemy potion recipes. It’s advisable to do this early to capitalize on First Craft bonuses when you craft these newly discovered basic potions.
Through Wild Experimentation, you can discover these essential potions: Cavedweller’s Delight.
3. Utilizing First Craft Bonuses
Craft the following items while they still provide skill points to maximize your early leveling efficiency.
- 1x Slumbering Soul Serum – Requires 4x Mycobloom, 5x Blessing Blossom, 5x Arathor’s Spear, 5x Gilded Vial
- 1x Petal Powder – Requires 2x Mycobloom, 6x Arathor’s Spear
Alchemy Specializations in The War Within
Upon reaching Alchemy skill level 25, you’ll unlock Specializations. The initial specialization you choose to unlock is not critical, as you can eventually unlock all four specializations as you progress and level your profession.
However, careful consideration should be given to how you allocate your Alchemy knowledge points. Avoid hasty spending unless you have a clear direction in mind. Knowledge points are a limited resource, and you’ll consistently find yourself wanting more. You can continue leveling Alchemy and strategically allocate knowledge points later.
For guidance on specializations, we recommend reading our comprehensive War Within Alchemy Specialization Guide and Builds. This guide provides sample builds and helps you make informed decisions about your specialization path.
Discovery and Experimentation Techniques
Continue using Wild Experimentation until your experiments result in a hazardous outcome. This is indicated by health point loss and being thrown back. The occurrence of a hazardous outcome is based on random chance, typically within 1-6 casts.
The first instance of a hazardous outcome will teach you the Meticulous Experimentation recipe.
Maximizing Recipe Discovery
Persist with Wild Experimentation until you experience another hazardous outcome. Note that the chance of discovering new recipes is relatively low, while the probability of a hazardous outcome is quite high. This means you may encounter a hazardous outcome early, potentially even on your first attempt.
It’s possible that some experimentation attempts may not yield any new recipe discoveries.
Upon a subsequent hazardous outcome, you will receive the Recent Catastrophe debuff, preventing further experimentation for 15 minutes.
To immediately clear this debuff, you can consume a Formulated Courage. The recipe for Formulated Courage is learned by investing 30 points into the Alchemical Mastery specialization.
Leveling Alchemy from 30 to 60
The most economical approach to leveling from 30 to 60 is using Meticulous Experimentation. This method is cost-effective to craft, provides 5 skill points per craft, and offers a higher chance of discovering new recipes compared to Wild Experimentation. However, it has a 1-day cooldown.
Meticulous Experimentation is beneficial to craft daily regardless, as it represents the most reliable method for discovering new potent potions.
Therefore, if you are not in a rush to reach level 100 Alchemy, crafting 5x Meticulous Experimentation daily is recommended until it ceases to provide multiple skill points around level 60.
Alternative Leveling Methods
These alternative methods can be used for faster leveling if you prefer not to wait for the daily cooldown of Meticulous Experimentation.
Crafting Discovered Potions, Flasks, and Phials
If you’ve been fortunate enough to discover valuable Flask, Phial, or Potion recipes through experimentation, crafting these can be an effective leveling strategy. Initially, craft a small batch of each discover recipe to assess their marketability on the Auction House.
If you find that certain potions, flasks, or phials are selling well, focus on crafting those that offer the highest profit margin or minimize your gold loss. Be aware that some crafted items might sell below the material cost, potentially resulting in no profit or even a loss.
Thaumaturgy Specialization for Leveling to 50
The Thaumaturgy specialization unlocks the Thaumaturgy ability. This ability allows you to transmute 20 chosen materials into 10-12 different materials and 1-2 Transmutagen.
For example, using Thaumaturgy on 20x Mycobloom could yield approximately 5x Storm Dust, 6x Bismuth, and 1-2x Ominous Transmutagen.
Thaumaturgy provides skill points up to level 50, after which you’ll need to revert to experimentation or crafting potions/flasks for further leveling.
Leveling Alchemy from 60 to 100
Crafting Flasks or Potions becomes the most efficient method for leveling Alchemy from 60 to 100. If you haven’t yet discovered any Flask recipes, consult the alternative recipes section below.
Meticulous Experimentation remains a viable option, staying yellow in skill color all the way to 100. Ensure you craft this daily, at minimum, until you discover a Flask recipe to enhance your leveling speed.
Flask Crafting for Levels 60-100
Flasks generally provide guaranteed 2 skill points per craft until skill level 90, at which point they turn yellow. They remain yellow until you reach skill level 100, continuing to offer skill points.
Note that Flask of Saving Graces provides only 1 skill point per craft, requiring you to craft more for the same skill gain compared to other flasks.

Alternative Recipes for Alchemy Leveling
Beyond Flasks and Potions, Transmutations are the only other recipe type that provides skill points up to 100. However, there are alternative Phials and Flasks that can be utilized until skill level 80.
Thaumaturgy Specialization Transmutations
Every transmutation recipe learned within the Thaumaturgy specialization offers skill points up to 100. Most transmutations turn yellow at skill level 80 and green at 90. Unfortunately, transmutations are subject to a 1-day cooldown once all daily charges are expended.
Gleaming Glory stands out as the only transmutation without a cooldown, and it also guarantees skill increases up to 100. However, achieving sufficient Gleaming Transmutagen requires significant investment of knowledge points into the Thaumaturgy specialization.
Profession Phials for Leveling to 80
Phial of Truesight, Phial of Bountiful Seasons, Phial of Concentrated Ingenuity, and Phial of Enhanced Ambidexterity all grant skill points up to level 80. However, these recipes become green between skill levels 70-80, necessitating the crafting of a larger quantity to reach level 80.
Phial of Truesight and Phial of Concentrated Ingenuity are likely to be the most valuable phials. Consider crafting a few of each and listing them on the Auction House to gauge market demand. If they sell well, you can effectively use these phials for leveling up to skill level 80.
PvP Flasks for Leveling to 80
Vicious Flask of Classical Spirits, Vicious Flask of Honor, and Vicious Flask of Manifested Fury provide skill points up to level 80. They will become green for the final 10 skill points between 70 and 80.
These recipes are sold by Hotharn in Dornogal for 7500 Honor each. Importantly, these recipes are not Bind-on-Pickup, so you can also purchase them from the Auction House if available at a competitive price.
