Instagram, a platform known for its dynamic evolution since its 2010 launch, has consistently introduced new features like Instagram Live (2016), Reels (2020), Broadcast Channels, and Threads (July). However, with these additions come subtractions. One of Instagram’s older features, Instagram Guides, is being phased out. Here’s a look at What Happened To Instagram Guides and what it means for your Instagram strategy.
What Were Instagram Guides?
Launched in 2020, Instagram Guides offered creators a unique way to curate content. It allowed users to combine multiple posts with short text descriptions, effectively creating mini-blogs on specific topics. These Guides were displayed as categorized posts and could be shared on Instagram Stories to drive more attention to multiple posts simultaneously.
If this feature doesn’t ring a bell, you’re not alone. Unlike the wildly popular Reels, Instagram Guides didn’t achieve widespread adoption. This lack of popularity led to its discontinuation.
The End Date: December 15th
According to a screenshot shared by Alessandro Paluzzi, a software developer known for uncovering updates on social media platforms, Instagram Guides officially ended on December 15th. Instead of being completely removed, Guides have been converted into Collections. Existing Guides are no longer viewable as Guides, and creating new ones is no longer possible. However, users could download their created Guides until March 14th, 2024.
Understanding Instagram Collections
Collections resemble Pinterest boards. They provide a way to save specific posts or Reels into categorized “boards.” Users can create multiple boards to organize their saved content. However, unless a collaborative board is created with specific individuals, only the creator can access their Collections.
This means that your followers can’t access content saved in your Collections, including the Guides that were transferred. This change significantly alters the discoverability and utility of Guides.
Adapting Your Instagram Strategy
If Guides were a crucial element of your Instagram strategy, there’s no need to panic. Focus on the features that are highly popular and effective.
- Reels, Stories, and Posts: These are the core components of a successful Instagram strategy. Consistent posting with engaging content is key to extending your reach.
- Stories: Engage your audience with interactive stickers that allow them to ask questions or participate in polls. This fosters interaction and keeps your audience involved.
- Reels: Leverage popular music and trends to reach millions of users daily. Reels offer a dynamic way to showcase your content to a broad audience.
- Posts: Use visually appealing photos that capture attention and encourage likes. High-quality images are essential for creating a lasting impression.
Other features to consider include Instagram Shop, where you can directly sell products to your audience, and Collab posts, which allow you to partner with other creators to expand your reach.
The removal of Instagram Guides should not significantly impact your reach. By focusing on other popular features, you can maintain and even enhance your engagement and visibility on the platform. Instagram’s dynamic environment provides ample opportunity to connect with your audience effectively.
