When starting your Animal Crossing: New Horizons adventure on the Nintendo Switch, you begin with 20 inventory slots. While this is an improvement from New Leaf‘s 16 slots, it might not feel like enough, especially considering the resources like Stone, Wood, and Iron Nuggets needed for crafting occupy valuable space. If you’re planning on gathering resources and crafting, you’ll likely find yourself short on space for fish, fruit, and bugs. Fortunately, you can significantly increase your inventory in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Here’s a guide to help you with pocket organization.
Pocket Organization Guide: First Inventory Upgrade
You can quickly obtain your initial inventory upgrade. Go to the Resident Services tent and use the Automatic Bells Dispenser (ABD), the machine in the corner. Select the option to purchase the Pocket Organization Guide for 5,000 Nook Miles. While it may seem expensive, it’s a worthwhile investment. Upon purchase, you immediately gain 10 additional inventory slots, increasing your total to 30.
Ultimate Pocket Stuffing Guide: Second Inventory Upgrade
Thirty inventory slots might seem like plenty, but you’ll soon find you need more. You can upgrade your inventory again for another 10 slots, but it requires playing for over a week to unlock.
As you progress, you’ll need to place three housing plots for new villagers, bringing your total villager count to five. On the day the third new villager moves in, Tom Nook will announce an upgrade to the Resident Services tent, transforming it into a building.

After a day of construction, the new Resident Services building opens. Use the ABD and select “Redeem Nook Miles.” New upgrades will be available, including the Ultimate Pocket Stuffing Guide for 8,000 Nook Miles. Purchasing this grants you another 10 slots, bringing your total to 40. This pocket organization guide will greatly improve your Animal Crossing experience.
Currently, there is no known method to increase inventory space beyond 40 slots, but this guide will be updated if new methods are discovered.
