During my college search, campus tours played a pivotal role in shaping my decisions. Some tours left me unimpressed, while others were engaging, insightful, and made me eager to return. These positive experiences ignited my desire to become a tour guide myself, to share my love for my university and help prospective students find their perfect fit.
A few years into my college journey at UW Oshkosh, I finally realized my ambition by accepting the Summer Ambassador tour guide position. Giving tours to prospective students quickly became my favorite job. Witnessing their initial impressions of campus reminded me of my own college visits and the excitement of discovering a place that would become my home. Answering their questions, the same ones I once had, and seeing their faces light up as they envisioned their own unforgettable college experience was incredibly rewarding.
Even as graduation approached, I knew I wanted to return for another year as a tour guide. Before embarking on my career path, I wanted to spend one more summer sharing the beauty of our campus and contributing to the college visit experience for prospective students.
A Day in the Life: More Than Just a Walk
My day as a tour guide begins in the Admissions Office, located in the historic Dempsey Hall. Surrounded by enthusiastic coworkers who share my passion for UW Oshkosh creates a positive and inspiring work environment. I often start by assisting with social media and graphic design projects, but the highlight of my day is undoubtedly meeting prospective students for their campus visit. Learning about their unique stories and backgrounds is always fascinating.
Before long, it’s time for the tour to commence. While the route may remain consistent, each tour is a unique experience tailored to the interests and questions of the visitors. We discuss everything from academic majors and hobbies to clubs, organizations, athletics, and study locations. Reeve Memorial Union, with its bustling food court, bookstore, and vibrant flags, is always a highlight. Other key stops include the library, recreation center, a residence hall room, and various academic buildings. At each location, I share interesting facts and personal anecdotes, emphasizing the memorable moments and experiences that define college life. We always capture a group photo, creating a lasting memento of their visit.
Returning to the Admissions Office allows us to answer any remaining questions before getting back to our projects. Whether we conduct one tour or two, each day is an opportunity to promote the university we love and encourage prospective students to join our Titan family.
My Tour Guide Philosophy: Engaging and Authentic
My campus tour philosophy is simple: make the tour memorable by keeping it relaxed and entertaining. Recalling my own college tours, I remember the tours that were strictly informative and followed a rigid script. These tours often left me feeling overwhelmed and struggling to retain information. The best tour guides were not only knowledgeable but also engaging, humorous, and willing to adapt to the flow of the group. Their tours were dynamic and personalized, making me feel welcomed and excited about the possibility of attending their university.
As a tour guide, I strive to incorporate these elements into my own tours. While providing accurate information is essential, I also understand the importance of injecting humor and personal stories to keep the tour light and engaging. Students and parents alike appreciate a good joke and relatable anecdotes. I aim to include at least one lighthearted moment at each stop, helping students visualize what college life is truly like. When I see a surge of energy and excitement on their faces towards the end of the tour, I know I’ve successfully conveyed the incredible opportunities that await them at UW Oshkosh.

Overall, being a tour guide is an incredibly rewarding experience. I cherish the opportunity to share my positive experiences as a Titan and play a role in prospective students’ college decision process.
