The fourth season premiere of Girlfriends’ Guide To Divorce initially highlights Abby’s (Lisa Edelstein) professional life. However, her personal relationships, including those with her teenage daughter and strained friendships, quickly take center stage. Notably, the episode reintroduced Abby’s ex-boyfriend, Will (Warren Christie), who hadn’t been seen since Season 1, prompting a re-examination of their past connection and its impact on Abby’s journey.
Will was the first significant relationship Abby pursued after her divorce from Jake. In Season 1 of Girlfriends’ Guide To Divorce, Jake was already involved with Becca, and Abby, while having a brief fling, still struggled with moving on. Will represented a new beginning for Abby, someone she could potentially build a future with. However, their relationship ended because Abby couldn’t balance her new romance with her lingering feelings for Jake, leading her to break up with Will for a final chance with her ex-husband. Will, in turn, sharply criticized Abby’s decision to reconcile with Jake, a sentiment he apologizes for upon his Season 4 return.
Like many of Abby’s past partners, Will disappeared entirely from the show after their breakup. Other boyfriends came and went, like Mike, the baseball coach from Season 3. But Will’s assessment of Abby and Jake’s relationship proved accurate: while they were excellent co-parents, they were fundamentally incompatible as a couple. Though his character initially appeared somewhat judgmental in Season 1, his insights were ultimately correct, and he remained undeniably charming.
Will’s reappearance suggests that Abby’s abandoned relationships might hold untapped potential. However, according to Edelstein’s interviews, Season 4 primarily focuses on Abby’s relationship with Barbara. She emphasized that the show explores female friendships and delves into their complexities and challenges, shifting the focus away from solely romantic entanglements.
Whether Will’s role will be limited to managing the connection between Lady Parts and the eccentric influencer Temple Hampton, or if the season will explore a renewed romantic connection between Abby and Will remains to be seen. While his reintroduction is an intriguing aspect of the season premiere, it seems that female friendships will take center stage in Girlfriends’ Guide To Divorce Season 4.
