Welcome to the ultimate guide for leveling Alchemy in WoW’s The War Within expansion! This guide is designed to provide you with the fastest and most cost-effective methods to max out your Khaz Algar Alchemy skill, from level 1 to 100. Whether you’re a seasoned alchemist or just starting, we’ll walk you through every step to efficiently reach level 100.
Alchemy is exceptionally well-paired with Herbalism. Leveling these professions in tandem can significantly cut down on your gold expenses by allowing you to gather the necessary herbs yourself. If you’re also looking to level Herbalism, be sure to check out our comprehensive War Within Herbalism leveling guide.
If Herbalism isn’t your chosen secondary profession, ensure you have a sufficient gold supply. You’ll need to purchase a substantial quantity of herbs from the Auction House to level Alchemy effectively.

Alchemy Trainer and Alchemist’s Lab Bench Location in War Within
To begin your Alchemy journey in The War Within, you’ll first need to find the Alchemy trainer in Dornogal. This trainer will teach you the Khaz Algar Alchemy skill, allowing you to start crafting.
Most of the new Alchemy recipes introduced in The War Within require an Alchemist’s Lab Bench, a specialized crafting station. Conveniently, you can find the Alchemist’s Lab Bench right next to the Alchemy trainer in Dornogal. This proximity makes learning and practicing Alchemy incredibly efficient.

Essential Shopping List for Alchemy Leveling (1-30)
Below is a shopping list outlining the materials you’ll need to reach approximately Alchemy level 30. Please note that material needs beyond level 30 can vary greatly depending on your chosen leveling path and recipe discoveries. For optimal cost-efficiency, always purchase the lowest quality materials available, as quality does not impact leveling speed.
- Mycobloom: 60
- Gilded Vial: 50
Leveling Your Khaz Algar Alchemy Skill: Step-by-Step Guide
For players of the Goblin race, you’ll benefit from a +5 Alchemy skill bonus thanks to the racial passive Better Living Through Chemistry. Kul Tiran characters also gain a +2 bonus from the Jack of All Trades trait.
Any bonus Alchemy skill points are advantageous as they extend the duration that recipes remain orange, guaranteeing skill point gains for longer. This can potentially save you gold by allowing you to continue crafting lower-level, and often cheaper, recipes for skill points.
Leveling Alchemy from 1 to 30
Follow these steps to quickly reach Alchemy level 30 and discover some essential new Alchemy recipes along the way.
Gilded Vials are readily available from the Alchemy supply vendor located near your trainer. While these are sufficient for leveling, higher quality vials are available through the Auction House if needed for other recipes later on.
Step 1: Crafting Coreway Catalyst
- Craft 10x Algari Healing Potion using 60x Mycobloom and 50x Gilded Vial.
- Utilize Algari Healing Potions you just crafted. This process will yield Coreway Catalyst, a key reagent for further experimentation and recipe discovery.
If you find yourself needing more Coreway Catalyst, continue crafting Algari Healing Potions, or consider purchasing them from the Auction House if they are more economically priced. You might also want to check the price of Cavedweller’s Delight on the Auction House, as sometimes it can be cheaper to buy outright than crafting additional Healing Potions (crafting Cavedweller’s Delight for Catalyst is not recommended due to cost).
Step 2: Discovering Basic Potion Recipes
Engage in Wild Experimentation using the herbs listed below. Experimenting with each herb for the first time will teach you the recipes for basic Alchemy potions. It’s recommended to do this step early to capitalize on “First Craft” bonuses for skill points when you create these potions for the first time.
Through Wild Experimentation, you can discover these fundamental potions: Cavedweller’s Delight.
Step 3: Utilizing First Craft Bonuses
Craft each of these items once while they still provide skill points due to the “First Craft” bonus.
- 1x Slumbering Soul Serum – Requires 4x Mycobloom, 5x Blessing Blossom, 5x Arathor’s Spear, 5x Gilded Vial.
- 1x Petal Powder – Requires 2x Mycobloom, 6x Arathor’s Spear.
Alchemy Specializations in War Within
Upon reaching Alchemy skill level 25, you will unlock Alchemy Specializations. The initial specialization you choose to unlock isn’t critical, as you have the opportunity to unlock all four specializations as you continue to level your profession.
However, the way you allocate your Alchemy knowledge points is significant. It’s advisable to be thoughtful about spending these points, especially early on, unless you have a clear specialization path in mind. Knowledge points are a limited resource, and you’ll likely find yourself wanting more as you progress. You might consider leveling Alchemy further before committing to spending knowledge points.
For guidance on choosing a specialization and effective builds, we recommend consulting our War Within Alchemy Specialization Guide and Builds.
Discovery and Experimentation Techniques
Continue using Wild Experimentation until your experimentation results in a “hazardous outcome”. This is signaled by a loss of HP and being thrown back, and it occurs randomly, typically within 1-6 casts.
The first time you experience a hazardous outcome, you will learn the recipe for Meticulous Experimentation.
Further Recipe Discovery
Keep performing Wild Experimentation until you encounter a hazardous outcome again. The chance to discover new recipes through Wild Experimentation is relatively low, while the probability of a hazardous outcome is quite high. This means a hazardous outcome may occur quite quickly, possibly even on your first attempt.
It’s important to note that there is a chance you may not discover a new recipe each time.
Upon your second hazardous outcome, you will receive the Recent Catastrophe debuff. This debuff prevents further experimentation for 15 minutes.
The only method to remove the “Recent Catastrophe” debuff is by consuming a Formulated Courage potion. The recipe for Formulated Courage is learned by investing 30 knowledge points into the Alchemical Mastery specialization.
Leveling Alchemy from 30 to 60
The most economical approach for leveling from 30 to 60 is utilizing Meticulous Experimentation. This method is cost-effective to craft, awards 5 skill points per craft, and offers a higher chance of discovering new recipes compared to Wild Experimentation. However, it’s important to note that Meticulous Experimentation has a 1-day cooldown.
Meticulous Experimentation is a valuable tool that you’ll likely want to use daily regardless of your leveling speed, as it provides the best consistent method for discovering new potion recipes.
Therefore, if you are not in a rush to reach level 100, it’s recommended to craft 5x Meticulous Experimentation daily until it ceases to provide multiple skill points around level 60.
Alternative Leveling Methods (30-60)
If you prefer a faster pace and don’t want to wait for the daily cooldown of Meticulous Experimentation, these alternative methods can be used for leveling.
Crafting Discovered Potions, Flasks, and Phials
If your experimentation has led to the discovery of useful Flasks, Phials, or Potions, crafting these can be an effective leveling strategy. Initially, craft a small batch of each to gauge their sellability on the Auction House.
If you find that certain items are selling well, prioritize crafting the one that yields the highest profit margin or minimizes your gold loss. Be aware that some potions may sell for less than the cost of their materials, potentially leading to no profit or even a loss.
Thaumaturgy Specialization (Up to Level 50)
The Thaumaturgy specialization unlocks the Thaumaturgy ability. This ability allows you to transmute 20 chosen materials into a combination of 10-12 different materials and 1-2 Transmutagens.
For example, using Thaumaturgy on 20x Mycobloom could result in approximately 5x Storm Dust, 6x Bismuth, and 1-2x Ominous Transmutagen.
Thaumaturgy provides skill points up to level 50 Alchemy. Beyond this, you will need to revert to experimentation or crafting potions/Flasks to continue leveling.
Leveling Alchemy from 60 to 100
Crafting Flasks or Potions is generally the most effective method for leveling Alchemy from 60 to 100. If you haven’t yet discovered any Flask recipes, refer to the alternative recipes section below for options.
Meticulous Experimentation remains a viable option, staying yellow in difficulty all the way to level 100. It’s advisable to continue crafting this daily, at minimum, until you discover a Flask recipe.
Flask Recipes for Leveling (60-100)
Flasks are a reliable source of skill points, guaranteeing 2 points per craft until level 90, at which point they turn yellow. They remain yellow and continue to provide skill points up to level 100. Note that Flask of Saving Graces is an exception, granting only 1 skill point per craft, requiring you to craft more for the same skill gain.
