WoW Professions Engineering Guide: Leveling Your Skill in Classic

Welcome to the ultimate guide on leveling your Engineering profession in Classic World of Warcraft! This Wow Professions Engineering Guide will provide you with the fastest and easiest path to raise your Engineering skill from 1 to 300.

Engineering pairs exceptionally well with Mining. Leveling both professions in tandem will significantly reduce your gold expenditure. If you’re also interested in Mining, check out our Classic Mining Leveling Guide. However, if you choose not to pursue Mining, you will need to purchase all necessary materials from the Auction House.

For players still in the character leveling process or starting a new alt, we highly recommend Zygor’s 1-60 Leveling Guide. It’s an invaluable tool to accelerate your journey to level 60.

Classic WoW Engineering Trainer Location

To begin your Engineering journey in Classic WoW, you must first find an Engineering trainer. You can learn Apprentice Engineering from any of the NPCs listed below once you reach level 5.

Click on the links to view the exact location of each trainer. Alternatively, you can ask any guard in a major city for directions to the Engineering trainer, and their location will be marked on your map with a red flag.

For efficiency, we recommend starting your training in Orgrimmar (Horde) or Ironforge (Alliance). These cities host trainers who can teach you up to Expert Engineering, allowing you to stay in one location until you reach skill level 200. Trainers in other major cities typically only teach Journeyman recipes, eventually requiring you to travel to Orgrimmar or Ironforge anyway.

Horde trainers:

Alliance trainers:

Leveling Classic Engineering

To get started, purchase a Blacksmith Hammer from a Blacksmithing or Engineering supply vendor, typically located near your trainer. General goods vendors also often carry these.

Gnome Engineering Racial Bonus

Gnome characters benefit from a +15 Engineering skill bonus due to their racial passive Engineering Specialization. This advantage means recipes will remain orange (guaranteed skill-up) for 15 additional skill points, potentially saving you gold by allowing you to gain skill-ups from lower-level recipes for longer.

Apprentice Engineering (1 – 75)

  • 1 – 30 30 x Handful of Copper Bolts – 30 Copper Bar. You will need approximately 30 of these later, so keep them.

  • 30 – 50 30 x Handful of Copper Bolts – 30 Copper Bar (Continue making these if needed to reach 50, or start on Rough Copper Bombs earlier if desired).

  • 50 – 75 30 x Rough Copper Bomb – 30 Copper Bar, 30 Handful of Copper Bolts, 60 Rough Blasting Powder, 30 Linen Cloth.

Journeyman Engineering (75 – 150)

To progress beyond skill level 75, you must learn Journeyman Engineering. Not all Engineering trainers offer this level of training; you need to seek out an Expert Engineer. (Requires character level 10)

You can learn Journeyman Engineering from these NPCs:

Horde trainers:

Alliance trainers:

  • Springspindle Fizzlegear – Ironforge

  • Trixie Boltspinner – Stormwind City

  • 75 – 90 60 x Coarse Blasting Powder – 60 Coarse Stone. Keep these as you’ll need them later.

  • 90 – 100 Consider crafting Copper Modulator or Practice Lock if you have extra materials or find yourself slightly short on skill points before moving to Silver Contacts. These are optional and depend on material availability and AH prices.

  • 100 – 105 5 x Silver Contact – 5 Silver Bar. If Silver Bar is expensive, consider making more Bronze Tubes first.

  • 105 – 125 25 x Bronze Tube – 50 Bronze Bar, 25 Weak Flux. Weak Flux is sold by Engineering Supply vendors near your trainer.

  • 125 – 150 Continue making Bronze Tubes, or consider crafting Simple Grenade if you have excess Bronze Bars and Leather. Alternatively, Arclight Spanner can be a viable option if you need a useful tool and have the materials.

Expert Engineering (150 – 225)

To advance past skill level 150, you must train Expert Engineering. This level of training requires you to find an Artisan Engineer. (Requires character level 20)

You can learn Expert Engineering from Roxxik in Orgrimmar and Springspindle Fizzlegear in Ironforge.

  • 150 – 160 15 x Bronze Framework – 30 Bronze Bar, 15 Medium Leather, 15 Wool Cloth. Keep these, as they are used in later recipes. Crafting these now might take you further towards 160. Stop making them once they turn green and only craft more if you need them for later recipes.

  • 160 – 175 Consider crafting Heavy Blasting Powder if you have a surplus of Heavy Stone, or switch to Whirring Bronze Gizmo if you have extra Bronze Frameworks and Bronze Bars.

  • 175 – 195 60 x Solid Blasting Powder – 120 Solid Stone. Save these, as they will be needed later.

  • 195 – 200 7 x Mithril Tube – 21 Mithril Bar. Stop making these once you reach skill level 200. Keep at least 6 Mithril Tubes, as they may be required if you choose Gnomish Engineering specialization at level 200.

Artisan Engineering (200 – 300)

To progress beyond skill level 225, you must learn Artisan Engineering. This highest level of training requires you to find a Master Engineer.

You can learn Artisan Engineering from Buzzek Bracketswing in Tanaris, Gadgetzan. He is located just outside the Inn, on the left side near the mailbox. You must be level 35 or higher to learn from him.

Engineering Specializations

At Engineering skill level 200, you gain the option to specialize in either Gnomish Engineer or Goblin Engineer. Certain items require a specific specialization to use, while others are crafted by one specialization but can be used by any engineer. Fortunately, many recipes crafted by one specialization can be used by engineers of either specialization.

For detailed information on choosing a specialization, please refer to our dedicated guide:

Guide to Engineering Specializations

  • 200 – 215 Consider crafting Mithril Blunderbuss if you have spare Mithril Bars and Wood, or continue with Solid Blasting Powder until it turns green if materials are readily available.

  • 215 – 235 40 x Mithril Casing – 120 Mithril Bar. Save these, as they are used in numerous valuable Engineering recipes.

  • 235 – 250 Continue making Mithril Casing, or switch to Unstable Trigger if you have extra Mithril Casings and Solid Blasting Powder.

  • 250 – 260 30 x Dense Blasting Powder – 60 Dense Stone. You may need to craft more than 30 to reach skill level 260.

  • 260 – 285 Consider crafting Thorium Widget if you have Thorium Bars and Runecloth available, or continue making Dense Blasting Powder until it becomes less effective.

  • 285 – 300 20 x Thorium Tube – 120 Thorium Bar. Schematic: Thorium Tube is sold by Xizzer Fizzbolt in Winterspring, Everlook, in the first building to the right.

Congratulations on reaching Engineering skill level 300! We hope you found this Classic Engineering leveling guide helpful in your wow professions engineering journey. Happy crafting!
