DeBakey Area Houston Course Selection Guide: Visiting Electives at McGovern Medical School

For final-year medical students aiming to broaden their clinical experience, McGovern Medical School in Houston offers a robust visiting student elective program. Utilizing the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) platform, McGovern Medical School welcomes applications from eligible students for elective rotations scheduled between August and April (Blocks 4-13). These electives are structured in four-week blocks, providing immersive learning experiences across various medical specialties. Visiting students have the opportunity to undertake a maximum of two elective blocks during their time at McGovern Medical School. To ensure timely processing, applications should be submitted at least 30 days prior to the commencement of the requested elective block. Please note that the complete application review process typically takes 3-4 weeks. Crucially, official approval for elective rotations is exclusively granted by the Office of Admissions and Student Affairs at McGovern Medical School. Approvals secured directly from department coordinators will not be recognized.

It is important to note that students applying for electives at the Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital (LBJ) will need to arrange their own transportation to and from the hospital.

Please be aware that APC Electives are not available to visiting students.
