III. Battle System: Strategic Turn-Based Combat
Trails in the Sky SC employs a tactical turn-based battle system on a grid-based field, reminiscent of Strategy RPGs (SRPGs). Positioning and turn management are key, even though movement isn’t directly tied to attacks. SC introduces the Chain Craft mechanic, adding a layer of strategic depth to the combat.
Turn Order and Bonus Icons: Seize the Advantage
The turn order is displayed on the left side of the screen, indicating the sequence of actions for both allies and enemies. Crucially, bonus icons can appear next to a character’s turn, granting beneficial effects. Understanding and capitalizing on these bonuses is vital for efficient combat. Furthermore, S-Breaks allow you to interrupt the turn order, adding a layer of tactical flexibility.
Here are the bonus icons you might encounter:
Icon Name | Effect |
---|---|
Heal HP | Recovers 10% or 50% of HP |
Charge EP | Recovers 10% or 50% of EP |
CP UP | Recovers 10% or 50% of CP |
STR UP | Increases Physical/Magic Attack by 10% or 50% |
Critical | All Attack/Magic/Recovery effects x1.5 |
Sepith UP | Steals Sepith from Target |
Crafts, S-Breaks, and Chain Crafts: Unleashing Powerful Abilities
CP (Craft Points): Fueling Special Moves
CP is a resource essential for using Crafts and S-Crafts. Characters start battles with zero CP and accumulate it by attacking enemies or receiving damage. Strategic CP management is crucial for utilizing powerful abilities effectively. CP can be saved up to unleash more potent attacks later in battles.
Chain Craft: Cooperative Attacks
A new feature in SC, Chain Crafts allow 2-4 characters to launch a synchronized attack in a single turn. To execute a Chain Craft, select “Chain” in battle and choose allies in close proximity to both you and the target enemy. Successful execution results in a multi-hit attack. However, be mindful that assisting allies also expend their turns, so strategic usage is key.
Craft: Unique Character Abilities
Crafts are character-specific special moves learned as characters level up. Each Craft consumes CP and offers a range of offensive, defensive, or support effects, adding tactical depth to character roles in combat.
S-Craft and S-Break: Game-Changing Super Moves
S-Crafts are the ultimate attacks, akin to Limit Breaks. Reaching 100 CP enables a character to unleash their S-Craft, a powerful attack. More strategically, S-Breaks allow immediate S-Craft activation, interrupting the turn order. With at least 100 CP, you can trigger an S-Break during any character’s turn by toggling left or right and pressing “X” (or using shortcut commands). S-Breaks can target anywhere on the battlefield, making them invaluable for eliminating threats like enemies with self-destruct abilities or gaining a tactical advantage. Furthermore, at 200 CP, S-Crafts deliver even greater damage.
Orbal Quartz: Customizing Character Abilities
Sepith: The Building Blocks of Quartz
Sepith is a resource dropped by enemies after battles. It serves two main purposes: crafting Quartz and selling for Mira (in-game currency). Accumulating Sepith is essential for character progression and customization.
Quartz: Enhancing Stats and Granting Arts
Quartz are crafted from Sepith and enhance character parameters when equipped. Each Quartz also grants access to Orbal Arts (magic). The key to unlocking a wider range of Arts lies in understanding Slots and Lines in the Orbment system.
Slots and Lines: The Orbment System
Each character’s Orbment has slots for equipping Quartz. Some slots are initially closed and require Sepith to unlock. Slots also have elemental affinities (e.g., Time element only for certain slots on Joshua).
A central slot dictates the elemental values for the character. Characters have either a single line or multiple branching lines from the central slot. Lines contribute to the overall elemental values based on the Quartz equipped at their ends. Characters with single lines can achieve higher elemental values more easily, granting access to more powerful Arts.
Bracers Guild: The Hub for Quests and Progression
The Bracers Guild is central to gameplay progression. It’s where you accept quests, which form the core of the game. Completing quests rewards you with Mira, items, and Bracer Points (BP). Accumulating BP increases your Bracer Rank, unlocking further progression and rewards. Earning extra BP often involves making specific dialogue choices or going the extra mile in mission objectives, rewarding thoroughness and strategic decision-making.
Miscellaneous Gameplay Elements
Cooking: Estelle’s Culinary Creations
Cooking provides beneficial buffs and recovery. Estelle can learn recipes by eating different dishes. Once a recipe is learned and the ingredients are gathered, cooking provides HP, EP, or CP recovery, and sometimes temporary stat boosts. Don’t underestimate the strategic advantage of cooked meals.
Fishing: A Relaxing Minigame
Returning from Trails in the Sky FC, fishing is now a more developed minigame. Cast your line in designated fishing spots and time your reel to catch various fish, adding a relaxing and potentially rewarding diversion.
IV. Tips and Tricks for Trails in the Sky SC Success
To navigate the challenges of Trails in the Sky SC effectively, consider these tips:
-
Multiple Saves: Your Safety Net: Essential for completionists. Hidden quests and missable BP opportunities are abundant. Minor choices can impact later events. Create a new save file before major decisions or quest milestones. (P.S. Autosaves offer some backup, but manual saves are crucial.)
-
Strategic Patience: Mistakes happen. If you miss BP or make a sub-optimal choice, you have options: reload a previous save or continue and aim for a perfect New Game+ run. Learn from errors and adapt your strategy.
-
Explore Thoroughly: To maximize BP and uncover hidden content, explore environments and speak to NPCs before progressing main missions. Many hidden items and quests are time-sensitive. Rushing can lead to missed opportunities.
-
The Bracer Notebook: Your In-Game Guide: This comprehensive in-game resource contains quest logs, Art and Quartz elemental values, and basic game information. Consult it regularly for quest details, elemental setups, and game mechanics reminders.

Playable Characters: Strategic Roles and Abilities
NOTE: Character analysis is ongoing, focusing on changes from Trails in the Sky FC and strategic roles in SC.
Estelle Bright: The Versatile Protagonist
Daughter of the legendary Bracer Cassius Bright, Estelle’s optimistic spirit and versatility make her a reliable party member throughout the game.
Estelle is a highly adaptable character, capable of utilizing all elements in her Orbment slots. Her Orbment setup allows for a balanced combination of mid-level Arts. While fitting high-level Arts like Titanic Roar and Volcanic Rave into a single line can be challenging, her flexibility shines in her diverse Crafts and overall strategic utility.
Estelle’s Crafts are varied and situationally useful. She possesses support Crafts to boost ally stats (Morale) and crowd control options early in the game. Her S-Crafts, Barrage and Pummel, are effective against single targets, making them valuable for boss encounters. While specialized characters may surpass her in specific roles, Estelle’s well-rounded nature, flexible Orbment, and diverse skillset make her a consistently strong and strategically valuable character, befitting her protagonist status.
Anelace Elfead: The Skilled Senior Bracer
A cheerful and skilled senior Bracer with a fondness for cute things, Anelace is a strong ally during the prologue.
Like Estelle, Anelace is a versatile character with a broad range of Crafts. She can utilize knockback attacks (Fallen Leaves) and self-buffs (Petal Dance for significant STR increase at the cost of DEF). Her Art usage is limited by her three Orbment lines, restricting her to basic Arts. Anelace excels with Crafts, making her a valuable asset in combat, but her limited availability (prologue only) means focusing on other characters for long-term strategy.
Agate Crosner: The Powerful Swordsman
A formidable Bracer wielding a broadsword, Agate is initially critical of Junior Bracers but proves to be a powerful ally.
Agate is a powerhouse, excelling in physical damage and possessing a unique moveset. He is the only character who can directly increase CP at the cost of HP (Wild Rage 2), allowing for rapid S-Craft usage. His Crafts include area-of-effect attacks (Draguna Edge, Flame Edge) and single-target AT Delay infliction (Spiral Edge). Draguna Edge stands out for its wide attack line. Agate’s S-Crafts (Beat Down for single targets, Final Break for groups) deliver devastating damage. His strength comes at the cost of low magic defense and limited Art potential due to his branching Orbment lines. Agate is best utilized as a frontline attacker, leveraging Wild Rage 2 for frequent and powerful S-Crafts.
Scherazard Harvey: The “Silver Streak”
A former disciple of a legendary Bracer, Scherazard is intelligent and uses Tarot cards, but also known for her heavy drinking.
Scherazard is available from Chapter I and specializes in Wind Arts and mid-range combat. Her whip provides a safe range to avoid self-destruct attacks. Her Crafts include area damage and spellcasting interruption (Bind Whip for Mute). Heaven’s Kiss buffs ally speed. Scherazard is useful early in the game, particularly with Wind Arts, but tends to be outclassed by other characters in later stages.
Kevin Graham: The Enigmatic Priest
A priest from a distant land, Kevin’s motives for coming to Liberl are shrouded in mystery, hidden behind a gentle smile.
Kevin is a long-range fighter specializing in Time Arts. His Orbment setup favors magic, with a dedicated line for Time element enhancement. His Crafts are support-oriented. Sacrificial Arrow redistributes CP to allies. His unique S-Craft, Grail Sphere, grants temporary immunity to attacks, providing crucial defensive utility in challenging battles (extended immunity at 200 CP). Kevin’s weaknesses are low movement and strength, but his potent Time Arts and support capabilities make him strategically valuable.
Olivier Lenheim: The Charismatic Minstrel
Hailing from Erebonia, Olivier travels Liberl as a musician, known for his charm and flirtatious nature.
Olivier is a long-range character specializing in Mirage element, a neutral element that offers versatile magic combinations. His single-line Orbment setup grants access to high-level Arts. Mirage element and flexible Orbment make him a potent magic user.
His Crafts are also strategically useful. Quick Draw allows precise targeting, Snipe Shoot can eliminate spellcasters from afar, and Happy Trigger provides area healing (though minimal, with low CP cost). His single S-Craft has mediocre damage. Olivier’s weaknesses include low HP, DEF, and limited movement. However, his strong Magic Attack, diverse Arts, and utilitarian Crafts make him an effective and strategically flexible character, especially with his ranged attacks.
Kloe Rinz: The Healing Prodigy
A kind-hearted Jenis Royal Academy student with a strong bond to her Gryfalcon, Sieg, Kloe excels in healing magic.
Kloe specializes in Water Arts and healing. Her Orbment setup is focused on Water, with three slots dedicated to Water element Quartz. This specialization, combined with her single-line Orbment, makes her a powerful healer and Water Art user. Her Crafts are minimal but functional: Kaempfer (Impose) debuffs enemy STR and DEF, and Sturm (Encroach) interrupts spellcasting, though it requires close range. Her S-Craft, Radiant Plash, is the most potent healing ability in the game, with massive HP recovery, revival, and even a DEF buff at 200 EP. Despite Orbment limitations, Kloe’s healing prowess, highest EP, and high Magic Attack make her a magical powerhouse, particularly as a dedicated healer.
V. Prologue: A Maiden’s Resolve Walkthrough
