Radarr Quality Profiles: A trash-guides.info Guide to настроить Optimal Media Quality

Setting up your Radarr Quality Profiles is crucial for automating your movie downloads to match your desired media quality. Many users find themselves wondering, “What are the best Custom Formats and scores to use for my quality profiles?”. The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer; the ideal setup depends on your home media hardware, playback devices, and personal viewing preferences. Some prioritize high-fidelity audio, such as HD Audio, while others focus on top-tier video quality. Many, of course, strive for the best of both worlds.

This guide, brought to you by trash-guides.info, your trusted source for media server optimization, will walk you through leveraging Custom Formats to fine-tune your Radarr quality profiles. We’ll help you tailor your settings to perfectly align with your individual needs and ensure you’re consistently downloading the best possible movie releases.

Understanding the Basics of Radarr Quality Profiles

Before diving into specific configurations, let’s cover the fundamental aspects of setting up Quality Profiles and Custom Formats in Radarr. If you haven’t already imported Custom Formats, begin by following our comprehensive guide: How to import Custom Formats.

For users managing multiple instances or seeking streamlined setup, consider utilizing a Guide sync tool to synchronize Custom Formats and even entire quality profiles across your Radarr installations.

To access your Quality Profile settings, navigate to: Settings => Profiles.

Navigating to Quality Profiles in Radarr Settings.

Remember that Radarr Custom Formats are configured on a per-profile basis, offering granular control over each profile’s download preferences. They are not applied globally across all profiles.

Select the specific profile you wish to customize.

Selecting a Quality Profile to customize Custom Formats.

Let’s break down the key settings within a Quality Profile:

  1. Profile Name: The descriptive name of your profile.
  2. Allow Upgrades: Enable this to allow Radarr to automatically upgrade to better quality releases as they become available. Radarr will cease upgrading once the “Upgrade Until” quality (setting 3) is met.
  3. Upgrade Until: Specifies the highest quality Radarr will automatically upgrade to.
  4. Minimum Custom Format Score: This is the crucial setting for Custom Formats. Releases must achieve this minimum score to be considered for download. Learn More
  5. Keep Upgrading Custom Format Until Score: Defines the Custom Format score Radarr will continue to upgrade releases for. Setting this to 0 disables upgrades based on Custom Format scores.
  6. Preferred Language Profile: Set your desired audio language for releases. “Original” is generally recommended to maintain the original audio language of the movie.

Below these core settings, you’ll find the section displaying your imported Custom Formats. This is where you’ll assign scores to each Custom Format to dictate your quality preferences.

Remember, Custom Formats are designed to refine your Quality Profile, not replace the fundamental quality settings. Generally, base quality (like Blu-ray vs. WEB-DL) takes precedence over Custom Format scores.

Here’s a summary of how Custom Format scores function:

  • Upgrade Until Score: Prevents Radarr from upgrading further once a release with this score (or higher) is downloaded.
  • Score of 0: Makes the Custom Format informational only; it won’t influence download decisions.
  • Minimum Score: Releases must meet or exceed this score to be downloaded. Otherwise, they are automatically rejected.
  • Negative Scores: Assign negative scores to Custom Formats that represent undesirable attributes. This reduces the overall appeal of releases that match these formats.
  • Rejection Scores: For formats you want to outright reject, use a significantly negative score (e.g., -10000). This ensures that even with positive scores from other formats, the total score remains below the minimum threshold.

Radarr’s Download Logic: Quality Trumps All

Understanding Radarr’s decision-making process is key to effectively utilizing Quality Profiles and Custom Formats. As of November 6, 2021, Radarr’s download logic prioritizes releases in the following order: Quality Trumps All!

  1. Quality: Higher quality (e.g., 2160p > 1080p > 720p) is always preferred.
  2. Custom Format Score: After quality, Custom Format scores are the next deciding factor.
  3. Protocol: Your preferred download protocol (Usenet or Torrent).
  4. Indexer Priority: The priority you’ve assigned to your indexers.
  5. Indexer Flags: Specific flags set by indexers.
  6. Seeds/Peers (If Torrent): Number of seeders/peers for torrent downloads.
  7. Age (If Usenet): Age of the release on Usenet.
  8. Size: File size (generally smaller is preferred for the same quality).

It’s also important to note that REPACKS and PROPERs are considered “version 2” of qualities and thus rank higher than a non-repack of the same quality.

To manage Propers and Repacks effectively, it’s recommended to adjust your Radarr settings: Settings => Media Management => File Management => Proper & Repacks. Change this setting to Do Not Prefer and instead, utilize the dedicated Repack/Proper Custom Format for more precise control.

trash-guides.info Recommended Quality Profiles

The following Quality Profiles, curated by trash-guides.info experts, can be combined into a single comprehensive profile. This allows for automatic upgrades from lower qualities (like 1080p) to higher qualities (like 4K/2160p) when better releases become available after an initial download.

HD Bluray + WEB: High-Quality HD Encodes

This profile is ideal if you prioritize high-quality HD encodes, specifically Bluray-720p and Bluray-1080p releases.

  • Typical Size: 6-15 GB for a Bluray-1080p movie, depending on runtime.

Before implementing this profile, we recommend reviewing the following foundational guides from trash-guides.info to ensure your Radarr setup is optimized: (Links to relevant setup guides from trash-guides.info would be inserted here if available).

This HD Bluray + WEB profile utilizes specific Custom Formats with carefully tested scores, as outlined in the table below.

Attention

The scores and Custom Format combinations presented in this trash-guides.info guide are rigorously tested to deliver the desired results while minimizing download loops. Experience shows that altering scores or omitting specific Custom Formats that are designed to work synergistically often leads to suboptimal outcomes. If you’re uncertain or have questions, please don’t hesitate to seek guidance on our Discord server.

Breakdown of “Unwanted” Custom Formats and Rationale:

  • BR-DISK: Ensures Radarr recognizes and ignores BR-DISK formats (ISO and Blu-ray folder structures) in addition to the standard BR-DISK quality profile setting.
  • Generated Dynamic HDR: Targets release groups known to generate their own dynamic HDR metadata (Dolby Vision and/or HDR10+), which can sometimes be problematic.
  • LQ (Low Quality) & LQ (Release Title): These custom formats identify and reject releases from known low-quality groups or releases with terms in the title indicative of poor quality. These groups are often banned from reputable trackers.
  • x265 (HD) ](https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/jdecked/[email protected]/assets/svg/26a0.svg): This blocks 720p and 1080p (HD) releases encoded in x265.
    • If you’ve also added the x265 (no HDR/DV) Custom Format, ensure only one of these (either x265 (HD) or x265 (no HDR/DV)) is scored at -10000 in your quality profile, and the other is set to 0 to avoid conflicts.
  • 3D: Rejects 3D releases, as 3D content is less common for home viewing.
  • Extras: Blocks releases that consist solely of extras or bonus content.
  • Sing-Along Versions: Excludes releases that include hardcoded sing-along lyrics for musical segments.
  • AV1: Blocks all releases encoded in the AV1 codec.
    • AV1 Considerations: While AV1 is a promising codec, currently, encodes are often focused on smaller file sizes over optimal visual quality. It also requires modern devices for playback and can sometimes present compatibility or transcoding issues. Major release groups are not yet widely adopting it. Blocking AV1 helps avoid potential compatibility problems.

Rationale for Streaming Service Custom Format Scores:

  • Most streaming service Custom Formats are assigned a score of 0 because they primarily serve to identify the source for naming conventions. Other factors should determine release preference.
  • BCore, CRiT, and MA are exceptions, receiving positive scores due to their typically superior source material, bitrate, and overall quality compared to other streaming platforms.

Use the following main quality settings in your profile:

Recommended Quality Settings for the HD Bluray + WEB profile from trash-guides.info.

Ensure that “BR-DISK” is not checked in your selected qualities.

We recommend deselecting “WEB-DL 720p” because high-quality WEB-DL releases are predominantly available in 1080p and higher resolutions.

Info

The order of qualities listed in your profile is significant, even if a quality is not actively checked. For example, if you have 1080p listed higher than SD, Radarr will reject SD results even if 1080p is not selected as a desired quality. Qualities at the top of the list are prioritized in manual searches.

  • Qualities higher on the list are more preferred, even if not checked as “wanted”.
  • Qualities within the same group are considered equal.
  • Only checked qualities are actively sought after for automatic downloads.

It’s best practice to move your desired quality to the top of the list for optimal manual search results and prioritization.

Workflow Logic – [Click to show/hide]

  • Upon release of a WEB-1080p version (from streaming services), it will be downloaded.
  • When a Bluray-1080p release becomes available, Radarr will automatically upgrade to the Bluray-1080p.
  • Downloaded media will continue to be upgraded based on Custom Format scores up to a maximum score of 10000.

Why the High “Upgrade Until Custom” Score?

The Upgrade Until Custom score is set to a very high value (10000) to ensure that Radarr always upgrades to the highest possible quality release based on your Custom Format preferences. Instead of calculating precise maximum scores for each profile, this approach simplifies setup and guarantees you consistently obtain the best available quality.

UHD Bluray + WEB: Premium UHD Encodes

Choose this profile if you favor top-tier UHD encodes (Bluray-2160p) for the ultimate viewing experience.

  • Typical Size: 20-60 GB for a Bluray-2160p movie, varying with runtime.

Prior to setting up this profile, we recommend reviewing the foundational guides from trash-guides.info to ensure your Radarr setup is properly configured for UHD content. (Links to relevant setup guides from trash-guides.info would be inserted here if available).

This UHD Bluray + WEB profile leverages specific Custom Formats and scores, carefully calibrated as shown in the tables below.

Required Custom Formats:

All HDR Formats – [Click to show/hide]Why “All HDR Formats”?

  • HDR Compatible Setup: You possess a 4K/2160p TV and a compatible media player (e.g., Roku, Apple TV, Shield, Smart TV app) that supports multiple HDR formats (Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, etc.).
    • Dolby Vision Compatibility Note: Plex on Apple TV and Plex with Infuse are only fully compatible with Dolby Vision profiles 5 and 8 when CMv2.9 is in use. Compatibility can be unpredictable. When using Apple TV, with or without Infuse, Dolby Vision playback may be hit-or-miss, potentially falling back to HDR10 or resulting in a black screen.
  • 4K/2160p Profile: If you’ve selected a profile that includes 4K/2160p releases, incorporating all HDR formats is essential.
  • Complete HDR Support: It’s crucial to include ALL HDR formats. Do not omit any for comprehensive HDR compatibility.

Why am I getting purple or green colors? – [Click to show/hide]Why am I getting purple or green colors?

Purple or green color casts when playing Dolby Vision content can stem from several factors:

  1. Unsupported Hardware: Your TV or media player (Roku, Apple TV, etc.) may lack Dolby Vision support or compatibility with specific Dolby Vision profiles. This can lead to color processing errors, resulting in purple or green tints.
  2. Incorrect Display Settings: Dolby Vision often requires specific settings to be enabled on your TV to render colors accurately. Improper configuration can cause color distortion.
  3. HDMI Compatibility Issues: Incompatible HDMI cables or ports may not properly transmit Dolby Vision signals, leading to incorrect processing and color rendering.

Troubleshooting Purple or Green Colors in Dolby Vision:

  1. Verify Dolby Vision Compatibility: Ensure your TV and media player are Dolby Vision compatible and have the latest firmware updates.

  2. Check Display Settings: Confirm that Dolby Vision settings are correctly enabled and configured on your TV.

  3. Inspect HDMI Cables: Use HDMI cables certified to support Dolby Vision signals.

Dolby Vision Profiles – [Click to show/hide]Dolby Vision Profiles

Dolby Vision content utilizes different profiles:

  • Profile 5 (1): Common in WEB-DL Dolby Vision releases without HDR10 fallback. (Incompatible devices will exhibit blown-out pinks and greens).
  • Profile 7 (2): Found in UHD Blu-ray Remuxes and UHD Blu-ray discs. (Plays on Nvidia Shield Pro (2019), but typically reverts to HDR10 fallback on other players).
  • Profile 8 (3): Used in (Hybrid) WEB-DL (HULU), Hybrid UHD Remux, and UHD Blu-ray releases, all of which include HDR10 fallback. (Compatible with many mainstream media players).

Plex and Infuse on Apple TV – Dolby Vision Limitations:

Plex for Apple TV and Plex with Infuse can only correctly play Dolby Vision profiles 5 and 8 if CMv2.9 is used, which cannot be determined beforehand. Dolby Vision playback on Apple TV is therefore inconsistent. Profile 7 is not supported for true Dolby Vision by either Infuse or Plex on Apple TV. Profile 8 on Plex for Apple TV will only play the HDR10 fallback (if CM2.9 is used) and may incorrectly indicate Dolby Vision playback even when displaying HDR10. Infuse can convert Profile 8 to Profile 5 on-the-fly (if CMv2.9 is used) and deliver true Dolby Vision, but may otherwise result in a black screen. Ensure “Extended Dolby Vision settings” are set to “Limited (prefer accuracy)”, “Convert P8 to P5 (when possible)”, and “play other P8 as HDR”.

Dolby Vision Versions – CMv2.9 and CMv4.0 – [Click to show/hide]Dolby Vision Versions – CMv2.9 and CMv4.0

Dolby Vision exists in two versions: CMv2.9 and the newer CMv4.0. CMv4.0 utilizes an improved algorithm and tone curve for enhanced tone mapping and control during the Dolby Vision mastering process. Plex for Apple TV and Plex with Infuse only fully support CMv2.9.

For detailed information on Dolby Vision versions, refer to: Dolby Vision Versions – CMv2.9 vs. CMv4.0

Rationale for Streaming Service Custom Format Scores (UHD Bluray + WEB Profile):

  • Same rationale as the HD Bluray + WEB profile.

Optional Custom Formats:

Audio – [Click to show/hide]Why “All Audio Formats”?

  • HD Audio Setup: You have a media player and audio system that supports ALL HD Audio formats (TrueHD, DTS-X, DTS-HD MA, etc.).
    • Apple TV Audio Passthrough Limitations: Apple TV does not natively passthrough HD audio. Infuse offers limited HD audio support on Apple TV. Refer to “I have an AppleTV” section for details.
  • Audio-Focused Profile: If you’ve chosen a profile that includes audio formats, using all audio formats is recommended for Remuxes/UHD Encodes.
  • Comprehensive Audio Support: Include ALL audio formats to maximize audio quality options.
  • Audio Transcoding Efficiency: Audio transcoding has minimal impact on server resources. If server performance is a concern, consider a different quality profile without audio format preferences.

I have an AppleTV – [Click to show/hide]

trash-guides.info flowchart for optimizing audio settings with Apple TV.

Audio Playback Methods:

  • Passthrough: Preferred for setups with AVR/Soundbar. Sends audio signals unaltered for processing by external audio equipment.
  • Direct Play: Client natively supports container, video, and audio streams. Minimal server CPU usage.
  • Transcode: Client does not support video or audio streams. Server re-encodes to compatible formats. Video transcoding is CPU-intensive, audio transcoding is low to moderate.
  • Decodes: Decompresses audio before sending to AVR/Soundbar.

Am I losing audio quality with LPCM? – [Click to show/hide]Using LPCM results in no loss of audio quality compared to original lossless formats (TrueHD, DTS-HD MA). LPCM is lossless; the auditory experience is identical. The only difference is the receiver recognizing the stream as PCM instead of Dolby/DTS. LPCM does discard object and spatial metadata (TrueHD Atmos, DTS-X).

Source: Infuse FAQ

Should I block audio formats due to setup limitations? – [Click to show/hide]For profiles including audio formats, blocking or lowering scores for specific audio formats is generally not recommended. Approximately 95% of Remuxes and UHD Encodes include HD audio formats like TrueHD Atmos, TrueHD, and DTS-X.

Two Options for Audio Handling:

  1. Choose a Profile without Audio Formats: Select a profile like HD Bluray + WEB or 2160p WEB-DL that does not prioritize specific audio formats.

  2. Accept Audio Setup Limitations: Acknowledge the limitations of your audio equipment and media player and accept potential audio transcoding or fallback to non-HD audio formats.

Breakdown of Miscellaneous UHD Custom Formats:

  • SDR: Prevents Radarr from downloading UHD/4K releases that lack HDR formats, prioritizing HDR for UHD content.
  • SDR (no WEBDL) ](https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/jdecked/[email protected]/assets/svg/26a0.svg)): Prevents UHD/4K Remux and Blu-ray encode releases without HDR. SDR WEB releases are still allowed, as 4K SDR WEB releases can offer better quality than 1080p due to higher bitrates.
    • If you’ve also added the SDR Custom Format, ensure only one of these (either SDR or SDR (no WEBDL)) is scored at -10000 in your quality profile, with the other set to 0 to prevent conflicts.
  • x265 (no HDR/DV) ](https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/jdecked/[email protected]/assets/svg/26a0.svg)): Blocks 720p/1080p (HD) x265 encodes but allows x265 releases if they include HDR and/or Dolby Vision, making x265 acceptable for UHD HDR content.
    • If you’ve also added the x265 (HD) Custom Format, ensure only one of these (either x265 (HD) or x265 (no HDR/DV)) is scored at -10000 in your quality profile and the other is set to 0.

Custom Format Groups: Advanced Audio & HDR Formats

These Custom Format groups are designed to be combined with the Quality Profiles detailed above. Users can select the options and Custom Formats that best match their individual setups and preferences.

Advanced Audio: For Audiophiles

This group is for users with high-end audio setups who want to prioritize high-fidelity audio formats.

  • HD Audio Setup Required: You need a media player and audio system capable of supporting ALL HD Audio formats (TrueHD, DTS-X, DTS-HD MA, etc.).
    • Apple TV Audio Limitations: Apple TV has limitations with HD audio passthrough. Check the “I have an AppleTV” section for details.
  • Audio-Centric Profile: If you’re using a profile that includes audio formats, incorporating all audio formats is recommended for Remuxes and UHD Encodes to maximize audio quality.
  • Comprehensive Audio Support: Include ALL audio formats for the broadest range of high-fidelity audio options.
  • Audio Transcoding Efficiency: Audio transcoding is generally lightweight on server resources. If server load is a concern, consider a profile without specific audio format preferences.

We prioritize lossy Atmos over lossless DTS-HD MA because Atmos provides object-based metadata for a more immersive audio experience, even if it’s lossy.

FAQ & INFO: Quality Profile Deep Dive

Understanding Proper and Repacks

Proper and Repacks – [Click to show/hide]We reiterate our recommendation to adjust Radarr’s Proper and Repack settings for optimal Custom Format behavior.

Navigate to Media Management => File Management and set Proper & Repacks to Do Not Prefer. Utilize the Repack/Proper Custom Format instead.

Disabling Radarr’s built-in Proper & Repacks preference.

This ensures that Custom Format preferences are always prioritized.

Using Custom Formats to Avoid Specific Releases

How to use Custom Formats to reject unwanted releases? – [Click to show/hide]When using Custom Formats to block unwanted releases, assign a very low negative score, such as -10000, rather than a smaller negative score like -10. If you use a small negative score and combine it with a positive score from a preferred Custom Format (e.g., +10), the total score could still reach or exceed your Minimum Custom Format Score. For instance, BR-DISK with a score of -10 combined with another format with +10 would result in a net score of 0. If your Minimum Custom Format Score is set to 0, this release could still be downloaded unintentionally. Using a very low negative score like -10000 ensures definitive rejection.

Releases You Should Always Avoid: Essential “Unwanted” Custom Formats

In our experience at trash-guides.info, these “Unwanted” Custom Formats are crucial for every Quality Profile. They consistently prevent the downloading of low-quality releases, significantly improving your media library’s overall quality.

Breakdown of “Unwanted” Custom Formats Rationale (FAQ Section):

Understanding Custom Formats with a Score of 0

What is the function of Custom Formats scored at 0? – [Click to show/hide]Custom Formats assigned a score of 0 are purely for informational purposes. They do not actively influence Radarr’s download decisions. They primarily serve to provide insights into release characteristics for your reference.

Minimum Custom Format Score: Considerations

Is setting a Minimum Custom Format Score beneficial? – [Click to show/hide]Some users advocate against using negative scores for Custom Formats and instead recommend setting the Minimum Custom Format Score to a value higher than 0.

Our perspective at trash-guides.info differs. We believe that setting a Minimum Custom Format Score above 0 can be unnecessarily limiting, potentially causing you to miss out on desirable releases, especially from emerging release groups or formats.

Furthermore, using negative scores clearly and explicitly defines your preferences – what you prioritize and what you want to avoid. This approach offers greater transparency and control over your quality profile setup.

Audio Channels Custom Formats: When to Use Them

Should I use Audio Channels Custom Formats? – [Click to show/hide]Within the broader set of trash-guides.info Custom Formats, you’ll find a dedicated group for “Audio Channels”. These Custom Formats identify the number of audio channels in a release (e.g., 2.0 stereo, 5.1/7.1 surround sound).

We generally advise against incorporating Audio Channels Custom Formats into your Quality Profiles. Doing so can restrict the number of available releases, potentially hindering your ability to find desired content. Only utilize Audio Channels Custom Formats if you have a specific, compelling need to filter releases based on audio channel count.

For Remux Quality Profiles, using Audio Channels Custom Formats is generally ineffective. Approximately 99% of Remuxes are multi-audio, rendering channel-based filtering redundant. For audio quality prioritization, the Advanced Audio Custom Formats group offers far more effective and granular control.

Avoiding x264/x265 Custom Formats: Codec Considerations

Why avoid using generic x264/x265 Custom Formats? – [Click to show/hide]We recommend avoiding the use of generic x264/x265 Custom Formats with scores whenever possible. A more effective approach is to utilize the dedicated x265 (HD) Custom Format instead.

While you could score generic x264/x265 Custom Formats, it’s generally less efficient. Approximately 95% of video files are encoded in x264, which enjoys superior direct play compatibility across a wider range of devices. Over-prioritizing x265, especially for non-UHD content, can significantly increase transcoding demands, particularly if you have multiple users accessing your media server.

Focus x265 prioritization primarily on 4K/UHD releases. The x265 (HD) Custom Format effectively manages x265 usage, allowing it for UHD content while discouraging it for lower resolutions where x264 offers better compatibility.

Troubleshooting Purple or Green Colors in Dolby Vision Playback

Why am I seeing purple or green colors in Dolby Vision content? – [Click to show/hide]

Purple or green color casts when playing Dolby Vision content typically arise from these causes:

  1. Hardware Incompatibility: Your TV or media player (Roku, Apple TV, etc.) may lack Dolby Vision support or compatibility with specific Dolby Vision profiles.

Troubleshooting Steps:

Dolby Vision Profiles: In-Depth

Understanding Dolby Vision Profiles – [Click to show/hide]

Dolby Vision content utilizes different profiles with varying characteristics:

Plex and Infuse on Apple TV – Dolby Vision Profile Compatibility:
